GINGER BEARD

Strangely enough, shortly after I decided to review the original Crabbie’s, one of AF&TB’s faves, Wychwood Breweries, jumped on the alcoholic ginger beer bandwagon. (And was soon followed by a spate of other contenders!) But Wychwood’s is not actual ginger beer, it’s a “traditionally crafted beer infused with fiery root ginger.” The best action figure to go with this tipple is MOTU Classics* Beast Man, who not only has an actual ginger beard, he’s ginger all over.

* Order the damn castle, arleady! (Pretty please with beer on top!)

Unlike Beast Man, however, this stuff ain’t that much of a threat. Despite the fierce-looking red-haired warrior with the metal eye-patch on the label, burn-wise, it’s got to be the second-least potent ginger-y beer I’ve ever drunk. It’s probably slightly weaker than Vernor’s in terms of spiciness, and really only beats out an exceptionally weak batch of Crabbie’s or a standard batch of Crabbie’s Spiced Orange. Still, Ginger Beard has got a nice little kick to it, and it has a good consistency in its burn quality, with one beer pretty much guaranteed to be the same strength as the last or the next. The burn’s cumulative, so the longer a swig you take, the better the tingle. At 4.2% ABV, it’s about average potency, but the taste is so smooth and sweet and gingery, it may deceive you into thinking you can drink it like soda pop, and before you realise it, you’re weaving drunk. Okay, so it might be a threat in that respect. The usual don’t-drink-and-drive rules apply here, even though Ginger Beard is deceptively like drinking liquid gingerbread. Man, this is nice stuff!

On the whole, I find these alcoholic ginger beers to be vastly more refreshing than the soft-drink variety. They’re mellower, more balanced, and they’ve got a proof rating to ’em.

Drink this if you also like: Slight spiciness, Vernor’s, Old Jamaican, Crabbie’s, or any other spicy ginger beer or ginger ale. Gingerbread. “Dessert” beers.

P.S. You've got one week left to order Castle Grayskull and help us meet the minimum production quota. Just sayin’.
