The last of our Hunter’s Brewery / The Blue Walnut miniseries features Hunter’s 4.8% golden ale, appropriately named Hunter’s Gold. Using only Goldings hops in the brewing process, with a late addition of more Goldings hops is meant to give this ale “a refreshing fruity smell.” Well, if you drink it ice-cold, like I did, you don’t get much fruitiness to the smell. When it warms up to between 40° - 50° F ( 4.5° - 10° C), more of the aromatic compounds in the ale reach evaporation point, and the aroma does become a bit more sharp and prominent, but not what I would call distinctly fruity. At least, not any specific fruit I could name with any certainty*. Whatever. It’s good stuff and smells just fine.

* Apart from bananas, blueberries, kiwis, cactus berries, and pineapples, most fruits disagree with my digestion. So I’m hardly a world authority on the subject, and anything I say on the matter should be taken with a grain of salt.

This is a more typical ale, made without Hunter’s signature use of honey, golden syrup, or other mellowing, sweet ingredients. As a result, it’s a pretty standard-tasting tangy ale, but a bit smoother and more low-key than most of the others on the market, with a subtle but reassuringly beery aroma, and no bitterness in the aftertaste. The aftertaste tends to fade quickly, but your mouth continues to water for a good long time afterward. Of the six Hunter’s brews I’ve reviewed, this is probably their most versatile and well-rounded one, mild enough to go with just about any food, or just to drink on its own. It’s got a bit of fizz to it — enough to give you a nice bubbly sensation in your mouth, but not enough to cause gale-force belches. Image

The figures I’ve chosen to team up with Hunter’s Gold are some gold-clad hunters, namely Night Storm (middle), Spiked Tail (right), and the somewhat rare Lasershot (left) Predators from the great and fun eponymous Kenner line from the early to mid-1990s. Obvious, really. The Yautja (Predators) have a saying: “Dtai’kai’-dte sa-de nau’gkon dtain’aun bpi-de,” which could be loosely interpreted as “The Hunt ain’t over until it’s over.” Well, this is the ultimate part of our Hunter’s miniseries, brought to you by The Blue Walnut Café. So, until Hunter’s Brewery works up some more recipes and gets them out onto the market, the Hunt is over . . . for now.
