Toy Fair NYC 2023!

Toy Fair 2023 was the first held since COVID, and boy was it a weird one! I was supposed to fly in Friday night, casually meander around the show floor by myself on Saturday, then go to several scheduled appointments on Sunday with a few friends.

Then Tropical Storm Ophelia parked herself over New England Friday, flooding and shutting down LaGuardia. My flight was cancelled, and the earliest I could rebook was Saturday afternoon. I lost an entire day at the show, and would have to sprint through on Sunday to see it all.

Thankfully (or maybe sadly) there was very little Star Wars product to discover. Each time I asked a vendor how their show was going, I got the same response: "I wish they hadn't held this in October." It was the worst possible month for Toy Fair. All their 2023 product was already on the shelves for a month or more for Christmas. It was too early to reveal anything coming out next Christmas. So they had nothing to show.

I took a bunch of photos, most of which I already shared on the Creature Cantina.com Facebook page. So check that out... in particular the LEGO photos which I'm not posting here but we had a really nice tour you should see. I decided to break my coverage into two stories... this one, and one focused solely on Gentle Giant. This story is for all the places that showed off new-ish stuff...

Kotobukiya

Koto basically had one Star Wars reveal - a Clone Wars Darth Maul. He comes with a custom base for their previously-released Ahsoka so you can set up a dueling diorama. You can preorder the Maul at https://www.kotobukiya.co.jp/en/title/star-wars/.

Numskull

Numskull had a very cool Stormtrooper Advent calendar on display. It was something very unique and dynamic. You open a box each day to assemble a statue. It can be ordered today here: https://www.justgeek.com/products/stormtrooper-countdown-character

EXG Pro

EXG is known more for their video game and mobile phone holders, but they did produce a couple very nice espresso sets for which they're looking for a US domestic distributor. I think it'd work nicely at Williams-Sonoma, personally. For now, you gotta order it online at https://exgpro.com/collections/star-wars/products/star-wars-rebel-luxury-espresso-coffee-set-1.

Jazwares

When I arrived for my appointment at the Jazwares booth, they informed me they weren't honoring appointments placed through the official Toy Fair 2023 press portal. That... sucked. But they did have an open display where they showed off their special Return of the Jedi 40th Anniversary AT-AT... in a very nice Hoth diorama...

Funko

A focus for the Funko booth was their new-ish "Bitty" scale Pops. You can order the 3-packs on their Star Wars Pops page.

Asmodee

Finally, just about the only actual "reveal" I came across was for an upcoming CCG from Asmodee. Known for their table-top games like Fantasy Flight, they're launching a new game sometime in 2024 called Star Wars: Unlimited.

And that wraps it up. I had a great time despite it being abbreviated. I hope the Toy Fair organizers heed the feedback from the vendors and maybe schedule the next one for February/March 2025. Make Toy Fair great again!
