Droids Custom Klaatu: Completely Inked!

On Sunday I had nothing to do, so I inked.

That photo is before I erased all the pencils. You can maybe see how I use inking to refine my lazy pencils. See, if I was a professional penciller, my pencils would look pretty much exactly like this. Clean and tight. But I'm just a simple hobbyist trying to make his way in the world. Here's what it looks like erased.

You might notice I did indeed add Pote Snitkin to the background. It was an endeavor fraught with tragedy. You see, the first time I drew him, he turned out fantastic. Then I looked at it, and he was too big. My first thought was to just ink him and make him smaller in Photoshop. But then I figured with the railing in front of him, I'd need to redraw a bunch of line when I shrunk him, so it'd be better to just draw him over. I'm just as happy with how the second iteration turned out, so no regrets.

The other thing I did this past week was cast some coins.

You'll notice there's way more than 20 coins there. That's because, since I was breaking out all the plastic stuff, I decided to cast coins for the next three customs, not just this one. In addition to the Skiff coin for Klaatu, we have Luke Poncho (for Rebel Commando) and Bib Fortuna. You see, it takes almost exactly the same amount of effort to cast no matter how many coins I do at once. I just increase the amount of resin I use. Instead of pouring into two molds and waiting 15 minutes for it to set, I pour it into six. Very efficient!!

One thing that does take extra effort is cleaning them up after they're cast. I need to file off the rough edges left from the molds which I am very unskilled at trimming down. I started filing them down by hand, my thoughts being "The wheel grinder isn't set up and the work bench is a mess and it'll be a pain to do all that and I might need an extension cord so may as well just file them." After filing down about 40 of them I decided maybe it was worth the effort to pull out the grinder. And after grinding down two coins I realized what a moron I was for doing it by hand and that I'm never going to use anything but the grinder ever again.

Next week, colors!!
