The Protocol-osseum welcomed a new prototype run recently - the C-3PO pieces from THE BIG CHECKMATE: Image

If you're a member of the DEAL/NO DEAL or BUY IT NOW! Facebook group, you probably noticed back in May Ross Cuddie offering up pieces from his score from the Danbury Mint. He described the deal as a crazy venture full of death and tragedy, but that's his tale to tell. What I'm here to show is what I picked up from that treasure trove!

In Ross' words, this is "the master run, all the best of the best pieces and uniques." Included are:

  • Wax head - Produced figure
  • Wax body - Produced figure
  • Resin test master - Produced figure
  • Master resin, white, right arm
  • Metal test sample, bronze, right lower leg
  • Metal test sample, gold painted, unproduced head
  • Metal test sample, silver, unproduced head
  • Metal test sample, brass, unproduced head (high detail)
  • Metal test sample, silver, sprue on foot
  • Metal test sample, brass
  • Metal first shot, silver
  • Metal proof, silver
  • Production chess piece Image Image Image Image Image

That's one hell of a run right there, and it tells a vivid tale of the production of this chess piece. It was originally designed to be cast in two pieces - full body and the right arm. Before production began, they trashed that plan, and went with a simpler sculpt. I can only assume it was a cost-cutting measure. The result was a slightly smaller, and far less polished final piece. In the resculpt, they lost most of the detail in the head, and significant detail in the whole rest of the body. It's a damn shame. The early pieces are gorgeous. The later pieces (featuring a distinctive two bumps on the chest rather than one) look like something that wouldn't even get past Lucasfilm Licensing.

But hey - lucky me, I get to own pieces from the original design now! I deeply appreciate Ross working with me so I could secure this run. These are the first wax sculpts I've ever owned. Now I just gotta figure out where and how I'm gonna display these. Until I do, here's a bunch more photos for your enjoyment: Image Image Image Image Image Image is not affiliated with Lucasfilm Ltd. or any of its licensees... damn them to hell.
