Back in April, I received an email from Media Masters Publicity asking if I'd be interested in a free review copy of an arts-and-crafts Star Wars book. I was immediately like "Free? YES PLEASE!!" And a few weeks later I received a copy of Star Wars Crochet Finger Puppets (Thunder Bay Press; April 2020; ISBN: 978-1684129034; Kit $19.99).

I don't crochet. But you know who does? My mom! So I gave her the book and asked her to try out the kit and give me a review. Here are her impressions.

The first thing she said was that the kits themselves were challenging. She said she hadn't picked up her crochet needles in a few years, but I can't chalk up the difficulty only to rust. The thread is pretty thin, and there's a lot of detail work required throughout the project. So she wouldn't recommend this kit to novices.

The second things she said was she was a bit surprised there was only enough yarn to complete two of the finger puppets. Looking at the box, you'd think there'd be yarn for all of the puppets depicted. It's only after you read the tiny words at the top of the box that you realize this kit only contains Vader and Luke.

Thinking I was asking her to knit all of the kits, she looked up the yarn colors she'd need to complete the rest of them. It was close to 20 colors. When she found a web site where she could order them, only 4 of the colors were in stock! She looked up the exact number codes the instructions provided, and nearly everything was sold out. So if you buy this book intending to knit all of the puppets, lack of yarn could prove a barrier to that.

Other than those two issues, my mom seemed pretty happy with the kit. The instructions were clear. And the final products pretty much match the pictures on the box.

Vader kinda reminds me of a walrus with the whisker-looking things, but these are supposed to be stylized so I can't complain. There was barely any yarn left over, but tons of stuffing. Probably enough stuffing to complete the whole rest of the run! If you can find the yarn. It'd be awesome if they offered expansion packs of some sort with the yarn you'd need to complete the other puppets, rather than rely on the customer finding the right colors on their own. Of course maybe avid crocheters who are more plugged in to the hobby than my mom is wouldn't have a problem.

So those were my mom's impressions. I hope they'll helped you make an informed decision about purchasing this set!
