Well, the summer is winding down and the
money had been made. It is official, this is the first year a
Star Wars movie has been released and will not end the year as
the #1 $$ maker.... no-sir-ee-bob that honor will go to SpiderMan.
That cursed webslinger has bested King George in the race to
win '02. But was it the best SuperHero film ever? Here is a list
of the 10 best SuperHero movies ever (this is NOT comic adaptations
or graphic novels come to the screen... it is for SUPERHEROS)
10- Batman
Forever: It is true that the same
director, Joel (HACK) Schumacher, goes on to destroy the Batman
franchise in B&R but this one is a great Batman story. I
like its humor and its style.
9- Superman
2: While this one was a favorite
as a child, and it still remains solid... it is not nearly as
strong as it should be. It is fun, but dated and sloppy.
8- The
Mask: Jim Carrey is in 2 of my
picks (he is the Riddler in BatMan Returns) and he SHINES in
this role. This film is a very nice adaptation of the comic origin
story... it keeps its gritty humor and ethics while still making
it mainstream palatable. PLUS it introduced us to Camron Diaz....
grrr baby, very grrr.
7- Spiderman: This movie was fun, but I can't help but think
that Raimi could have done better. The story is as good as it
could be and I have little beef with the movie, but I think it
could have been a masterpiece and it just came out OK.
6- Blade: I LOVE THIS MOVIE, the sequel is just OK, but
this movie rawked my ass off. The DayWalker is as cool of a hero
as could be, the editing it top notch, the story is good, the
directing above average... it is a stylish, near-perfect superhero
ROMP!
5- Superman: It used to rank higher, but after a few eMails
last year pertaining to my top 100 cool movies changed my mind...
you readers made me think about this movie and its HUGE flaws.
Everything up til the end rocks, but the ending of the movie
keeps this from ranking as #1.
4- Unbreakable: It is my belief that this movie is a perfect
SuperHero origin story. Shymalan is the PREMIER genre director
at this point in time.
3- Darkman: This is ALSO a perfect origin story and it is
shot in perfect comic book style. Why couldn't Mr. Raimi do something
like this for the web-slinger... that way Spidey would at least
merit the money it earned.
2- X-Men: I love this one. It is tight, fast and true to
the source. I can't wait for the next one.
1- Batman: Tim Burton had a vision of the DarkNight and
I eat it up like candy. This movie holds up well over time and
it could be the best cast villain in the history of SuperHero
movies.
slacking away the summer,
