DR. JONES GOES IT SOLO
The light from above disappeared
quickly as Indy continued his descent into the Shadowlands. He
knew the further he dropped, the sooner he'd hit bottom, and
there was no way he could survive a fall from the altitude he
fell from. He needed to slow his descent, but in the encroaching
darkness, it became harder and harder to see anything at all.
He blindly groped about, hoping to latch onto something, anything
at all. Unfortunately, nothing was within arms reach. Maybe,
if he could just get his whip wrapped around something, it could
save him, but he couldn't crack it while falling, and even if
he could, he wasn't able to see anything to latch it on to.
"Well... this is it,"
Indy thought. "This is how it ends. I never thought my luck
would run out on some forest floor of an alien world. I just
hope I... "
"WHACK!!!"
Indy clipped something!
Fortunately, he had the wherewithal to flail out with his arms
and grasp onto whatever it was he had hit. A branch! He had clipped
a branch, and a rather large one at that! He was lucky he didn't
land directly on top of it, as the force of his fall probably
would have cracked a few ribs at the very least, or at the most,
caused him to sustain severe bodily injury such as a concussion
or spinal trauma.
Jones glanced down. He was
close enough to see the ground, but still too high up to drop
down safely. Even if he attached his whip around this branch,
it still wouldn't put him close enough to the ground. Going back
up was completely out of the question. Then he heard a sound
that didn't ease his mind. His sudden meeting with this branch
apparently was more than it could stand, as he could hear and
feel it breaking away from the tree. It snapped, but luckily
for the Professor, it didn't snap all the way through, rather
just hung at a precarious downward angle.
"At least I'm getting
closer."
As if the branch could hear
him, it finally gave way, and he completed his descent. The good
news was that something else broke his fall, the bad news was,
it was the hard ground.
"That wasn't... too
bad." Indy said as he tried to rise and shake the cobwebs
out of his head. He glanced down and saw his hat lying next to
him. He picked it up and placed it back on his head. "Now
to find a way ouuuuu... "
The ground rose up to meet
him once again.
He awoke sometime later
with a splitting headache, and every joint in his body cried
out in pain.
"I guess it really
isn't the years, it's the mileage. Ughhhhhh."
He unsteadily got to his
feet, rubbing his head with one hand, and his lower back with
the other. How long had he been out, or what should he do next
now that he was safely on terra firma? He continued looking around,
took a few tentative steps, and walked smack into another tree.
He stepped back, and realized this tree was orange. Looking again,
it became clear this wasn't a tree, but the garb of a very large,
very angry Trandoshan with its blaster rifle leveled directly
at him.
"Oh crap."
Then the Trandoshan noticed
his fallen comrade, who had dropped into the Shadowlands along
with Dr. Jones, lying a few feet away. He swatted Indy out of
the way, and then stomped over to determine the condition of
his fellow slaver.
Indy hit the ground with
a thud, but fortunately remained conscious this time. "Just
what I needed, more aches and pains."
Indy got to his feet as
the Trandoshan knelt by his compatriot, and determined by the
way the body was grotesquely positioned on the forest floor,
that the two of them would never go on a hunt together, at least
in this life. The Reptilian hunter rose, and turned his attention
back to the other recent visitor to the Shadowlands... who now
was nowhere to be seen.
Indy was moving as fast
as his injuries would allow. Hindering his progress was also
the incessant darkness that surrounded him, in addition to having
no idea where he was going. He just knew he needed to put as
much distance between himself and that ugly lizard back there.
He ran until it felt as if his lungs would explode. Now he needed
to find a place to hide and recoup while he figured out what
to do next. Surely Honj and the Wookies knew he fell, and would
be on their way down here... unless they assumed the drop had
killed him, and that there was no point in pursuing the issue.
But they had to come down here to rescue the young Wookies. However,
their descent in the basket would take a lot more time than his
did without it. As he continued his train of thought, he ascended
a good-sized mound and came directly upon the center of the Trandoshan
camp! Eight of the nastiest, meanest-looking slavers all turned
their attentions his way, and they weren't looking to invite
him to their evening meal, unless it was as the main course!
