CHAPTER III: THE PLOT THICKENS
(Part II)
Vader wasn't quite sure what
to make of his master's last statement, so he simply remained
silent.
"I know exactly of which
two Sith you are referring to, Lord Vader." The Emperor
continued, "Their mention was no mistake, or mere oversight.
Knowledge is power, you know this. You must seek out everything
you can about the Sith, all there is to be found regarding harnessing
the Dark Side of the Force. You never know what you may overturn."
Palpatine crossed to one of the overstuffed chairs. "This
tale will take some time to tell." He mentioned and lowered
himself into the seat. "You may sit, if you like."
After all the kneeling he had just done, Vader preferred to remain
standing.
"Like you, my apprentice.
I questioned my master about the two. Darth Maul also thought
their mention was rather odd and came to me seeking enlightenment."
Palpatine shook his head slowly from side to side as he went
on. "Count Dooku merely passed their names by and never
gave it another thought. Even after I probed him, hoping to jog
his memory. He made no mention of them. Perhaps he never saw
them at all...pity."
The Emperor swiveled the chair
slightly in Vader's direction, but didn't bother to look up at
him as he continued. "But Tyranus is gone and you have taken
his place! What I am about to tell you is ONLY passed on verbally.
None of this may ever be written down or recorded. If our collected
history were to fall into the wrong hands. They wouldn't know
any more than you do right now." Darth Sidious now raised
his head and stared into his pupil's dark visage. "What
those two...Sith did to our order is...irreprehensible."
"You mean they defected
to the Jedi." Vader commented.
"No." Palpatine retorted.
"Throughout the ages, many Sith developed various weaknesses
and abandoned the Dark Side for what they thought was something
better." The Emperor spat out the last couple of words with
obvious disdain. "It's one thing to show signs of weakness
or compassion, it's quite another to make oneself look...foolish.
Even a great master like Darth Ruin didn't detect what was really
going on...until it was too late. But he did manage to recover
and come up with a plan that would bring about their downfall..."
Palpatine smiled as those events were recalled in his mind.
"There was such promise."
Sidious began again. "One might say they were TOO evil,
even for a Sith. When we end a life, it has a reason behind it.
There are any number of explanations one can give for such an
act. These two...killed because the opportunity presented itself,
or because they felt like it. Like it was a form of amusement
to them. Now it's true, at the time of Darth Ruin, there wasn't
much allegiance within the Sith ranks. Everyone was vying for
power and things like treachery and deceit occurred on an hourly
basis. But the actions of Danno and Mortis united them, even
for a very short time, in coming up with a solution to dispose
of their "brothers". For our numbers were still quite
few, and the brash actions of these two rogues were sure to bring
the Jedi down upon their heads any moment."
The Emperor was silent for a
time, as he gathered his thoughts. "It is believed that
Darth Bane was the one who originated the rule of two. One to
hold the power, the other to desire it. Actually, Darth Danno
was the first, but his actions negated him of receiving the honor.
Now Darth Danno didn't believe in the rule of two for the same
reasons Bane did either. He believed he was the Sith'ari, a perfect
being who would rise to power and bring balance to the force.
Except in his mind, bringing balance meant creating a legion
of Sith who weren't Sith'ari, but were much more powerful than
the common Sith Master. He believed there was knowledge and abilities
of the Dark Side that had never been tapped into, practices and
teachings as infinite as the Dark Side itself. All he had to
do was find them. For that he'd need...assistance. Thus he began
seeking out an apprentice. One who believed as he did, functioned
as he did, yet still would call him...Master." Sidious chuckled
as he pondered the absurdity of it all. "I'm getting ahead
of myself, Lord Vader. I think it's best to begin where it all
began...with Darth Danno."
Vader finally decided to take
a seat beside his master, this truly was going to be a fascinating
tale...
