Time to Take a Star Wars Sabbatical

Those of you who know me know that I have been dedicated to collecting vintage SW toys for the better part of 8 years, and I have for the most part thoroughly enjoyed myself. I’ve made some really good friends, learned an awful lot about the toy production process, and amassed a collection of really cool stuff.

Since the birth of my son in 2003 however, my interest as slowly waned. I can remember a time when I looked at every RebelScum thread on the vintage forums each time someone replied to them. Now I go days without even opening the site. I remember when I used to chat the night away in the SWCA chat and IM my buddies on a frequent basis. Those days are pretty much over for me now. Hell, I remember when I used to write something or create a Quick Shot for this site every week. Now I’m lucky if I do one a month.

What I’m saying here is that I think I’m burned out. It really isn’t the hobby’s fault. For the most part, you guys in the vinty community are top shelf. There has been a significant decline in topics that I find interesting in the various forums, but I think that has more to do with my knowledge level increasing than an outpouring of stupid threads (although in all honesty some of you should actually do a little research before asking some of the questions you ask). My friends have pretty much stayed true, and I’ve only had one transaction go poorly this year. I think my priorities have just changed since becoming a father (and becoming the sole income provider since my wife stays home now). I thought going to C3 would renew my interest to the point it was pre ’03, but it was short lived. I thought I’d get jazzed up again after seeing ROTS, but that too was short lived. I feel I may be losing the love for little plastic men.

So here’s the deal. Rather than rush head-long and sell my entire collection to buy a BMW or something, I’ve decided to take some time off from the hobby entirely. That means that I won’t be sending any more submission to the site for the time being, that I won’t be posting or reading any threads on any forums, or be responding to any mail lists I belong to. Right now my timeline is a month to make a decision, but it may be longer than that.

This is not a resignation letter. Creating submissions to send to the site is one of the few things about the Star Wars hobby that I still thoroughly enjoy. I’m just taking a bit of time off to examine my life and the hobby’s place in it.

So that’s it. All deals I have going on will still be honored on the same timelines. Sorry to leave you guys in a lurch for content (especially you Bill), but hey, you still can enjoy the 5 or 6 submissions Tresob sends in every week! :oP

Take care guys, and I’ll see you soon!
