And now
for my first Meet and Greet in a long while, I present the mystical,
magical, mythical Tattooed Freak............
Baldy: What's your name?
ST: Shane Turgeon
Baldy: Where are you from?
ST: Originally, the end of a dirt road in the middle
of nowhere Saskatchewan. That's in Canada. In 1991 I moved to
Edmonton, which is where I currently call home. That's in Canada
too.
Baldy: How many fingers and
toes do you have?
ST: 10 of each although being from Saskatchewan, you'd
probably wonder. Between the inbreeding and the frostbite I should
either be plus or minus. Call me lucky.
Baldy: How did you get into
SW collecting?
ST: Well, it was kind of a progression. Of course I
played with the toys as a kid but I really don't consider playing
with toys as a child "collecting". I got into comics
at a pretty young age, started "collecting" toys in
1990 with the Toy Biz line of Marvel figs and after re-discovering
the SW films with some friends in 1991 and reading the first
of the Zahn series, it just sort of felt right. I started bugging
all my friends for their old toys and it all spiraled from there!
Baldy: How did you get into
tattoos?
ST: I've been fascinated with tattoos since I was about
14 and always knew they were something I'd eventually get into.
Fortunately, I didn't jump into some cheesy bad tattoo right
when I turned 18 and I actually put a lot of thought into my
first piece. I decided what I wanted at about 19 or so but still
waited until I was 21 to get it done.putting a decent amount
of thought into a tattoo is always a good idea. I just wish I
could draw so I could actually do it for a living but alas, I'm
doomed to a life of watching TV.
Baldy: Do you have any pics
of them? SHAMELESS PLUG allowed here :)
ST: Hmmmmm, pics? Well, there's this little site, www.tattoosandtoys.com,
you may have heard of it.most of them can be seen there along
with a myriad of other Star Wars, GI Joe, Transformers, and other
misc "geek" tattoos. There's also an issue of Star
Wars Insider where some guy did a big feature on SW tattoos too.
;^)
Baldy: What's your favorite
tat?
ST: On me? My Yoda.it was the first character piece
I got and the guy who did it, Steve Hayes, is just amazing and
the piece still blows me away. It's based on a Tsuneo Sanda painting
and Steve nailed it bang on.
On someone else? Probably Stu
Duford's Bespin backpiece done by Jason Rhodes.just an amazing
piece all around. It can be seen on www.tattoosandtoys.com
Non-Star Wars would have to be
this Animal Liberation piece done by Nick Baxter.you can see
it here: http://www.darksidetattoo.com/Tattoo_Galleries/tattoo_2774.html
Baldy: Your favorite toy, SW
or non?
ST: Damn..that's a really tough question! I dig an
awful lot of toys. Star Wars I'd have to go with my childhood
Slave 1 for nostalgia sake. I also just got a 12" Ledy Tusken
which has been a grail for me for nearly 10 years. Non-SW, I
love my 22" Iron Giant (oh man, that sounds kind of bad
don't it!), and Firefly from the GI Joe line is a long time fave.
Baldy: Is it true you have a
Polar Bear for a pet?
ST: Nah, here in Alberta we've got badgers for pets.Polar
Bears are more of a Yukon thang. Their license plates are even
shaped like one.
Baldy: How did you come upon
"The Pose" ? Here
is an example of said pose.
ST: I borrowed the pose from the man, nay, the legend
known as the "Incomparable Johnny Style". He had more
of a stink finger pose going with his hands so I felt the need
to throw the horns up to change it up a little.
Baldy: What else interests you,
toywise or other?
ST: Geez.that's a little vague! Pr0n is definitely
high on the list for obvious reasons but besides that I'd have
to say BMX riding (even though I suck terribly at it) and astronomy
is another favorite interest. Yes, I'm a big nerd.
Baldy: Any focus within SW stuff
and how did you get into that?
ST: Man, my biggest problem is my lack of focus, or
so people tell me. I generally like too much different stuff.
Still, I do have a couple of specific collecting foci. I have
a nice little Thall Joben run going on as well as a nice grouping
of unproduced Droids Skiff material. There's really far too much
cool stuff out there to collect though so I could never focus
solely on one character or item.
Baldy: If you could wrestle
ANY wrestler, dead or alive, who would it be?
ST: Aw man, I don't know if I should answer this. What
with your Pr0n empire and all I have this sneaking suspicion
"wrestle" means sweaty men humping and anything I say
is going to involve some kind of dastardly innuendo! ;)
Seriously though, there are a
few.Hayabusa and Mitsuhiro Matsunaga from Japan.two totally different
styles but equally amazing. I think a match between skinny little
me and Andre the Giant would have been something to see too.
On a local level, I would have loved to have worked with Dr.
Luther, a mainstay on the Canadian indy scene for a long time.
Baldy: Why O' why the fascination
with midgets?
ST: Why not the fascination with midgets!!!! They're
so cute and cuddly and full of endless possibilities! Plus, they
played Ewoks! EWOKS! Everyone loves Ewoks. And Jawas. And Ugnaughts..damn,
midgets rule all of Star Wars! And wrestling. And Pr0N too.forget
Star Wars, midgets rule everything cool!
Baldy: Can you spare some Canadian
Tire money?
ST: Hell no! I'm saving for a vacuum cleaner!
Baldy: How did you get the job
of moderator on Rebelscum?
ST: I think they asked me to do it! It's really quite
amazing how in demand I am around the hobby. I'm so modest too.
Baldy: Are you REALLY going
to throw Oscar to the wolves and let him freeze to death in the
cold, dark wilderness of Canada when he comes to visit you?
ST: Pffft. Freeze to death? What's a little -40 degree
weather between Canadian and Mexican friends.he'll be fiiiiiiine!
Just get your orders in for acrylic cases sooner rather than
later.
Baldy: Am I still a genius?
ST: Only in Georgian Chinese food restaurants Billy.
Baldy: Dammit, that figures.
Well, thank you
sir for the fine interview. I am now positive that 99% of Canadians
ARE Pr0n freaks and like sweaty men......
And now back
to the regularly scheduled boredom of this website.
