The penultimate chapter in our six-pack of Hunter’s Brewery reviews (courtesy of The Blue Walnut) brings us to a nice dark ale “with a lovely malt taste and a delicate caramel finish.” The first of only two of Hunter’s beers I’ve drunk to use a single variety of hops, Pheasant Plucker is made with the Boadicea variety, both during brewing and with a late addition of more Boadicea “to give a luscious fruity finish.” Image

At 4.3% ABV, it ranks fourth in the Hunter’s beers in this miniseries in terms of potency. It gets paired up with the Dreadnok Thrasher,* for not-very-obvious reasons. Thunder Thrasher is not a pheasant plucker, nor a pheasant plucker’s son (nor a spoonerism of that profession, either), but he’s the type of scum who would gladly pluck a live pheasant just to hear it screech blue murder.

* I refuse to call him his new trademark-lapse name, Thunder. A little digital photographic text manipulation on the name-plate will take care of that!

Pheasant Plucker (Editor's Note: does anybody else keep reading that as "Pleasant Phu..." oh, never mind - BC) is a very rich beer with a slightly bitter aftertaste to it. The “caramel finish” is best achieved by inhaling through the nose just before you take a mouthful of the stuff. This is the type of beer that would best go with game dishes like venison, rabbit, or, well . . . pheasant. Or very spicy snacks. It’s not an ale you could sit down and just drink lots of, as it’s somewhat heavy and overwhelming, but perfect for washing down a banquet.

Drink this if you also like: Craft beers, malty beers, rich food.

Next week: the Hunter’s miniseries concludes! is not affiliated with Lucasfilm Ltd. or any of its licensees... damn them to hell. Can't they see a golden opportunity when they see it? Buy us, you fools! You already own our souls and all our money... buy US!!!
