MORRISON’S HOT CROSS ALE

Okay, we’ve had a slight diversion with some tasty liquor and an excellent juice blend; now it’s back to beers! Brewed for Spring (they didn’t want to say “Easter” in case they offended anyone, I guess), this ale was produced especially for the Morrison’s supermarket chain at which I do most of my grocery shopping. They’ll occasionally get in “guest ales” at bargain prices, sometimes of their own manufacture, sometimes an import for test-marketing purposes, sometimes bargain-bin remainders they think they might be able to shift, or sometimes something brewed for a special event like a Royal Wedding. (Yeah, that "Kiss Me Kate" Ale I reviewed a few weeks back.) This is one of their own-brand seasonal brews. In terms of the weak action figure connection, I reckon that once Prince Adam has said “By the Power of Grayskull!” and all that lightning has finished zapping him into He-Man, that cross on his breastplate (and the breastplate itself) must be quite a few degrees warmer than the ambient temperature. There. Hot cross. That’s my lame-brain story, and I’m sticking to it.

Anywho, as for the beer itself, it’s meant to be a sort of hot-cross-bun-flavoured ale, with a bit of sweetness, fruitiness, and spiciness in it. What it actually comes out as is disgusting. It’s got all the aspects there, but they just don’t go together; they all fight for attention in your mouth and make a sour mish-mash of strong yucky tastes. That was the first bottle I tried. The second bottle, however, was lovely and mellow, with all the flavours mingling nicely to provide the exact delicious flavour the brewers were going for. So it seems to be a bit of a crap-shoot as to the quality of the bottle you might pluck from the shelf or bin; it's really a case of cross your fingers and hope for a good bottle. This is rather a shame, because although this particular brew is nothing I’d really be in a hurry buy again, the chocolate & vanilla beer they bring out occasionally as a winter warmer is extremely nice. So I don’t want to discourage Morrison’s from bringing out seasonal, budget beers with interesting flavours. I just want to discourage them from ever bringing out something with such variable quality again. It’s 4.5% ABV, so it’s nothing outstanding in the ethanol department, but about average(ish).

Drink this if you also like: Hot cross buns, full-flavoured seasonal ales with a bit of spice to them, thirst-quenching beer (if it’s a good batch); Eating earthworms for a bet (if it’s a bad batch).
