CHAPTER 22: PREPARING FOR BATTLE

New Feature: Boba Fett's Video Blog!
Posted by: Tresob Yr 04.02.08 12:01am
Here's another anniversary first! Blogs are all the rage these days. And video blogs are the cutting edge l33t! Say some stupid emotional crap up on YouTube every once in a while and you'll draw legions of fans. Well, Star Wars characters like to share, too! We're proud to present the first installment of...

Boba Fett's Video Blog

It wouldn't be an anniversary without a CONTEST!
Posted by: Bill Cable 04.02.08 12:01am
It's been a long time coming, but CreatureCantina.com finally has a real sponsor! Sure, we have our Google ads and occasionally post SideShow links (or used to... now it's just not worth the bother), but we've never had a dedicated banner ad... until now! CreatureCantina.com is pleased to introduce our sponsor - Wattographs! Wattographs excels in finding those obscure Star Wars autographs that nobody else has the skills to secure. And their prices are fantastic! So shop there. And tell them we sent you!

So now for that contest part... Wattographs was kind enough to give us a batch of autographed photos to give away to celebrate our anniversary. The selection they generously gave us is pretty sweet. Here's what you could win:

  1. Chris Parsons - Snowtrooper
  2. Ronald Falk - Dexter Jettster
  3. Anthony Phelan - Lama Su
  4. Jason Wingreen - Boba Fett (original voice)
  5. Ben Cooke - Kit Fisto

Every one of these is a tough autograph to score, and we're very thankful they were so generous. So how do you win? Simple... E-mail your name and mailing address, along with your choice of autographs from most wanted to least, to wattographs@creaturecantina.com. The top winner will receive his first choice. The second winner will win the highest choice still available on his list. And so on from three through five. And if nobody enters, I KEEP THEM ALL! So don't enter! This is some awesome schwag that I want to keep myself!

Thanks again to Wattographs! They're great people, and they deserve your business.

Has it really been SEVEN years already?
Posted by: Bill Cable 04.02.08 12:01am
It's hard to believe... but when CreatureCantina.com opened nobody had seen Episode II yet. Hell, nobody even knew what Episode II was gonna be called yet! (When the name finally was revealed, we took great joy in the announcement.) At the time I was practically a newlywed, and my daughter Julia was barely more than a zygote. It just seems like so long ago...

And going through the weekly grind sometimes makes it seem much, MUCH longer. I'm sort of blessed by the fact that I have the free time to contribute to and run this site, because it certainly is a time sink. And on days like today that worries me. You see, I'm looking for a new job, and I doubt whoever is going to hire me plans to have me sitting around with nothing to do for hours on end. So I don't really know what the future holds for myself or for CreatureCantina.com. And that's as exciting as it is disconcerting. I mean, I love this site. I've earned and received numerous benefits by keeping it up and running for so long. Press passes. Schwag. Recognition and respect. Fame. It's very nice. But if I can't squeeze it in between IT projects at my new job (whatever that job might be... BTW if you're hiring in Pittsburgh please E-mail me for a resume) I can't imagine spending the few scant free hours I have at home doing this site instead of spending time with my family.

But then there's my staff, to whom I feel an intense loyalty. I can't imagine just abandoning them, even if it means I'd have less free time. So something will need to be worked out. Whether it involves fiddling with the schedule a bit or maybe ceding a bit of control over updating the site... something will be done. Has Tresob been around long enough to trust him with the password?? Perhaps... But then that may have been his scheme all along... wait around until my moment of weakness when he'll pounce on the password and forward my domain to point to Comenzo's site!!! ACK!!!

So maybe I won't hand out the password just yet...

Yes, these past seven years at CreatureCantina.com have led to some great times. Three Celebrations. A couple Wizard Worlds. The VIP treatment at All-Con. Lots of friends across the Star Wars internet spectrum. It's been a blast. And here's to hoping for seven more!

Hosehead
Posted by: Tresob Yr 04.09.08 12:01am
Why do practically all of the Force Unleashed characters look like they belong in some kind San Francisco parade? At least half of them appear to be advertising items from a BDSM catalog...from what I hear, at least.

Is it just that the Dark Side is kinky?

Heck, the line even somehow managed to make the Jump Trooper look vaguely gimpish with that crazy and seemingly gratuitous protuberance coming out of his mouthpiece.

It brings new meaning to calling someone a "hoser," eh?

Hasbro Unleashes new round of FU cheat codes
Posted by: Tresob Yr 04.09.08 12:01am
One of the pack-ins which Hasbro is featuring in the Force Unleashed line is a set of four random cheat codes for the upcoming game (which, if forums are to be believed, are Holocron, Mandalore, Wookiee, and Lightsaber). Now that everybody and their myspace friends seem to know the cheat codes, Hasbro has decided to release another four codes into the mix.

Once again, Creature Cantina is proud to scoop the other collecting sites and be the first to announce these new cheat codes in an exclusive that you won't find anywhere else on the Internet...yet.

We have WINNERS!
Posted by: Bill Cable 04.09.08 12:01am
Last week we ran a contest. People entered. Fewer people won. Here's that shorter list that you probably aren't on...

  1. Nic Sommers: Ben Cooke - Kit Fisto
  2. Rob D'Onofrio: Chris Parsons - Snowtrooper
  3. Josh Bodwell: Anthony Phelan - Lama Su
  4. Eric Gonzalez: Jason Wingreen - Boba Fett (original voice)
  5. Scott Wadsworth: Ronald Falk - Dexter Jettster

A nice thing about this list is that almost every person on it received the top person on their want list. Only Scott didn't get his top pick, and he got his second!

So congrats to the winners! Your autographs will be on their ways shortly!

BTW, the Wattographs affiliate link to the right there is actually working now, so we'll get the credit if you order any autographs through them. You know you wanna be cool like these winners here and own one of these autographs! So why not click over and buy one? (I know... I know... cuz they're not free... but I say they're worth the price!)

It's cuz they're HUGE!

I can see a ton of people not having any clue why this week's comic is funny... in part because I can see a ton of people not having any clue why ANY week's comic is funny... but this week's comic in particular is a bit oblique. So I'll just go ahead and explain ahead of time the humor in this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Return of the Jango
Posted by: Tresob Yr 04.16.08 12:01am
One of the many things absent from the prequels that made OT great was the development of a principle villain. In the OT, we could rely on Darth Vader to show up in all three movies and do something really horrible. But we also got to see him mature as a character and become more than just an obstacle for the protagonists to overcome.

In the prequels, we never really got to watch a villain develop, since all of the coolest villains are killed shortly after being introduced. Sure, we get to watch Palpatine rise to power...but not really develop as an actual person.

So...I wonder...what would Jango have become if he had survived the Battle of Geonosis?

Mission: FAILED
Posted by: Bill Cable 04.16.08 12:01am
So two weeks ago my new apprentice Bobby Blakey volunteered, I say volunteered to procure a CC.com SUCKS! photo with one Chris Parsons who was visiting Dallas. Last week he informed me that his "Internet crashed" the day before the con and he couldn't print out The Sign beforehand. What does this teach us about procrastination, class?

But some good did come of this. See... I was thinking "Chris Parsons sounds familiar... I think I got him at C4." So I checked the Cantina Celebrities page to check it out... only to find that I'd never posted my C4 photos!! I posted links to them in my C4 write-up, but never updated the actual page. If Bobby hadn't offered to get that photo, it may have been years before I realized this error.

So here you go... almost a year in the making... my set of Celebration IV Cantina Celebrities!

I just picked up the Tsui La Choy Mein Order 66 pack (you know, the little blue guy with a fish for a head), so I'm in a mood to appreciate the little figures. I'm generally a sucker for the half-pint characters. Maybe it's because the difference in height makes for variety among the 3.75" toys. Maybe it's just my collector's sense of space consciousness. Anyway, it's pretty awesome that the Jedi Council has a squad of diminutive commandos that can call on for missions where size does matter...

CHAPTER 25: YES, IT GETS WORSE

The Force runs strong in my family
Posted by: Bill Cable 04.23.08 12:01am
It would not be fair to say I forced Star Wars on my daughter. Sure, I bought her some Galactic Heroes. And I've been taking her to PSWCS meetings since she was two. And I got her both LEGO: Star Wars games for the Gamecube, and the complete Saga for PlayStation3. But I never forced her to play any of them. I mean, I wouldn't think saying "If you want to play video games with daddy you need to play Star Wars" would be classified as forcing her to play. Maybe it'd qualify as mild coercion... but nothing more serious than that.

Well, somehow my love of Star Wars has seemed to rub off on my daughter. LEGO: Star Wars is probably her favorite video game. She sets up her Galactic Heroes in a new configuration every week. And she draws Star Wars characters all the time... just like her daddy. She drew a particularly good one this past week, which she gave me permission to share. So check out this very special Cable Original...

Isn't that fantastic? Julia is 6 years old now, and getting better all the time. Maybe artistic talent is genetic after all! I was going to identify the characters for everyone, but then I decided I want to have a little fun. Almost all of them are obvious, but there are a couple tricky ones in there. So here's what I'm going to do... the first person who E-mails me correctly identifying all seven characters from left to right will receive a sheet of "The Cantina" comic strip artwork... because I could never give away this masterpiece!

It's not easy needing green...
Posted by: Bill Cable 04.30.08 12:01am
Now, of the three main characters in the comic strip, I identify with Walrus more than any of them. While he's not particularly brilliant, we do share a sort of "I yam what I yam and that's all what I yam" straightforwardness. But after six months of so far fruitless job hunting, I'm beginning to feel a bit like Greedo. I just can't seem to find that perfect bounty. Of course that could change within a few days if my interview last Friday went as well as I thought it did, or if I stumble upon something good at a job fair tonight. While it's not a fun situation to be in, at least it's inspirational enough to prompt this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Link parade!
Posted by: Bill Cable 04.30.08 12:01am
I was deluged with links from random people this week... TWO WHOLE E-MAILS with links to stuff worth linking to. The first came with this intro:

I wanted to share with you a hilarious music video that addresses the great Ewok debate! The video was created for the upcoming 25th anniversary of RotJ and...

And I'll stop it there... don't want to spoil the big surprise! I'll just say it's worth watching the whole thing.

Star Wars Ewok Gospel

The second link was a request for a link on our link page. They said link that they link fail to link suck link link.

Hi there, my site is www.lightsabre.co.uk and it sucks not.
We have interviews, news, reviews, comic strips, fiction, artwork - you name it, somewhere it will be hiding behind a Bantha or hitching a ride on a space slug.
Hope you consider us, expect to see a cc.com banner on our site shortly and top site - great fun (and Julia really has the artists touch. If she wants to draw something for us I'll use it in the site. Seriously, my 8 year old godson drew something for us a while back and it looked just brilliant)

So I'll add them to the links page. Gotta love the alternate Euro spelling of lightsaber. And how could we not link to a site when dude in the upper-left corner is the spitting image of Chris Fawcett??

Aqualishous
Posted by: Tresob Yr 04.30.08 12:01am
Beedo totally hooked me up with some figures this week, including the Aqualish Senator Po Nudo. At first, I had planned to go for political satire, and make an "Elect Po Nudo" sign, but the politics of the Star Wars universe got too confusing for me after a day of work. In the end, I decided to send a shout out to all of the SP-loving Anonymous out there...

CHAPTER 26: DID WE MISS SOMETHING?

Go to the Star Wars Roadshow; win Tresob's stuff!
Posted by: Tresob Yr 04.30.08 12:01am
This morning I made a six-figure donation to the DCSWCC. That's six action figures, not a monetary sum containing six digits. They are going to be prizes at a raffle at the Star Wars Road Show in Maryland this Saturday.

Yes, I do consider it a news-worthy update whenever I part with toys.

I also gifted 40 Star Wars minis to be used as door prizes for the first people who show up. I hear they are going to be reserving the rare minis for attractive female registrants...or maybe it was just female registrants...one can't be too picky.

If swag isn't enough to entice you, then maybe the fun-filled, family-oriented atmosphere will be. The DCSWCC Star Wars Road Show is a unique event modeled after PBS's Antique Road Show, only with uber-collectors from the DC Metro Area Star Wars Collecting Club showing off their geekiness by identifying your hopefully rare Star Wars collectibles and then telling you how much they would have been worth if you hadn't opened them up and played with them as a kid. But the most exciting part of it all is, again, the chance to own toys that were once in my possession.

The Star Wars Road Show is being held Saturday, May 3rd from 1:30pm until 4:30pm at West County Area Library, 1325 Annapolis Road Odenton, MD 21113.

Quote of the Week!
Posted by: Bill Cable 04.30.08 12:01am
I got an E-mail from my brother Monday asking:

"Has no one ever requested a Ben (Sir Alec Guiness) Kenobi drawing? I was looking through your list, and I didn't see him."

To which I replied that no, nobody has. My brother's reaction wins CreatureCantina's "Quote of the Week" (not that we have such an award... but if we did it would)...

"That is ridiculous. I hope the people that requested the likes of FX-7, probot, and all those jedis that had maybe one line in the stupid prequels have some weird collecting concentration (like say, C3P0 for example)that compelled them to pick throw-away characters that wouldn't even have names if they didn't need something to print on the boxes the toys come in over the guy that delivered the best performance in all the star wars movies."

Amen, my brother. Amen.

NOT a good idea...
Posted by: Bill Cable 05.07.08 12:01am
So something occurred to me last Wednesday... a few hours after I posted last week's update. I realized that while in the midst of a job search, it probably wasn't very wise to be posting comic strips depicting a desperate job hunter bent on murdering people. I have the site on my resume, so it's not that unlikely that one of my prospective employers might check it out, and if they click on the strip have second thoughts. Hopefully no damage was done, but in retrospect it wasn't the smartest thing I've done. Employers - if you're reading this today, I have no intention whatsoever of ever shooting people to take their money. I'm a rock-solid non-psychopath! So you can feel very safe hiring me. Two thumbs up!

I've decided not to continue last week's story arc, so I went to a reader-submitted idea. Enjoy this week's non-violent, gentle and well-adjusted "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Posted by: Tresob Yr 05.21.08 12:01am
One of the top hits for a "Star Wars" search on YouTube this week is Chris Parrott's Star Wars (Sweded): A Cardboard Hope.

Cringe as an architecture student at Sheffield makes fools out of his friends by dressing them up in wood-pulp and forcing them to recite lines from Episode IV.

I'm sure they all will have a good laugh about it in the future when potential employers see the video while running Internet searches on their names.

Too much of a good thing
Posted by: Tresob Yr 05.21.08 12:01am
You know, I'm not actually planning on seeing the new Indiana Jones movie on Thursday. Don't get me wrong. I'm planning on seeing it this summer, just not on Thursday. I think I've been burnt too many times by the Star Wars prequels to let myself really get worked up about it. I didn't even buy any of the Indy figures based on new characters out of fear I would jinx the experience.

That being said, I still need to squeeze some more value out of the Indy figures I did buy to rationalize the insane seven dollar price tags...

Behold the power of the Cantina!

CreatureCantina.com has gotten me status within the community. CreatureCantina.com has gotten me money. CreatureCantina.com has gotten me published in several books. CreatureCantina.com has gotten me special treatment at conventions and other events. CreatureCantina.com has gotten me in trouble. CreatureCantina.com has gotten me a measure of fame. CreatureCantina.com has gotten me legions of readers and fans, and the best comedy writing staff in the business.

All this, I expected. I've worked hard at this, and these are all logical ends to such effort. But there's one thing I never dreamed I'd get as a result of this site... something I never expected I'd write in this space.

CreatureCantina.com has gotten me a job.

I've been hired as a web programmer. Not because of anything I've done in my real career, but because of what I've done with CreatureCantina.com. Because of this site... because I converted it to a MySQL-based database and wrote the PHP to display the news... I was able to land a job with a great company making very good money designing web pages. I'm certain my winning personality had a hand in the hiring, but I wouldn't have even gotten a foot in the door if not for my work on CreatureCantina.com.

As I sit here looking at my site in disbelief thinking, "This... THIS got me a job??!!" I can't help but be awed. In the whole balance of the universe, how amazing is it that my freakish appreciation for Star Wars humor would result in gainful employment?

So let that be a lesson to you! If you love something, do it! Stick with it! Tough it out! And eventually, out of the blue, you might just be dumbstruck by the benefits you reap.

I hate these guys...
Posted by: Tresob Yr 05.28.08 12:01am
I hear that Lego Indiana Jones will not feature any depictions of Nazism. On the one hand, I can see how people might get a little concerned about kids playing a game with cutsie-pie Nazis, especially if they are unlockable characters. It's one thing to play as a fictional Sith Lord who likes to electrocute his victims with lightning that comes out of his hands, but I'm not sure I'd want a Tresob Jr. unlocking a Lego-style Adolf Hitler. On the other hand, I'm also uncomfortable about letting my kid play a game that sounds like it was programmed by Holocaust deniers.

Are Changes afoot for CC.com??
Posted by: Bill Cable 05.28.08 12:01am
Hello friends! This is your humble host, posting for the last time ever from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania! This weekend I'm moving to Pittsburgh. FINALLY! I've been longing for this for, oh... I don't know... EIGHT YEARS. No offense to central PA, but it just ain't home. And while my Wookiee-loving buddies have begged and pleaded for me to reconsider, nothings gonna stop me now!

Back when I announced the move, I said it might bring changes to CC.com. Now that the move is nigh, I figured I'd remind you of this possibility. Right now I'm planning to continue updating the site on Tuesday nights. But that might not last for long. Once I get a handle on my new work schedule, I might end up moving it around. We'll see. I just want to put this out there, because I don't want a torrent of E-mails some Wednesday morning from people demanding "Where the hell is my Cantina??!!" Now that I've posted this, I can reply with a smarmy, "Well, if you read The News Archive you'd see I warned of this eventuality way back on May 28th. Jackass!!"

PS: Oh yeah... Holy Crap I'm gonna be in Pittsburgh next week!! YAAAAAAYYYY!!!

...technical difficulties...
Posted by: Bill Cable 06.04.08 12:01am
For some stupid reason, I can't access my Gmail account. Every site except Google is working. And Google is working fine on my wife's PC. Unfortunately I don't have access to her PC right now; the move has everything out of whack. Expect to see the update sometime Wednesday evening. Hopefully.

Stupid frickin' Internet...
Posted by: Bill Cable 06.04.08 7:30pm
So my laptop I'm using this week STILL isn't allowing me to connect to Google. Or MSN. Or a couple other places. It connects to everything else fine, though. So what I ended up doing is forwarding the stories I had in Gmail to a new CC.com E-mail account I created, and that I could check from the laptop to create the pages and everything. HUGE pain in the ass... I should be on my desktop for next week, so things should in theory go more smoothly. We'll see. Until then, here's this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

CHAPTER 31: TAKE MY TEMPERATURE, I THINK I'M RUNNING A FEMUR

Point-dexters
Posted by: Tresob Yr 06.04.08 7:30pm
Like a wary and patient hunter stalking his prey...or like the creepy and unshaven thirty-year-old looking for cheap toys...I waited months for the local Suncoast to finally put its Death Star Briefing multi-pack on clearance. With the set's price down to $29.99, I decided to pounce...like a tiger smelling blood, ravenously tearing apart my victim with huge pointy teeth...and that's when the store manager decided to call security.

In any event, here is the fruit of my latest acquisition (and newly formed criminal record). I decided to go with a non-linear set of images this week, so don't go looking for connective plot points between panels. You only have your own imagination to hurt if you do.

Stupid frickin' moving...
Posted by: Bill Cable 06.11.08 12:01am
OK... my Internet is working now. Good times. But there's another problem. The people who own our new house won't let us move in yet!!! They told us in May, "Oh yeah, sure... we'll let you move in before closing no problem!" And they they didn't. We were supposed to be in there last Tuesday. It's a week later and still nothing, even after we provided all sorts of paperwork they asked for. It doesn't help that their realtor is in Florida on vacation. So my big problem in regard to the site is I don't have all my hardware. I'd prepped a couple weeks of Cantina strips ahead of time anticipating some delays for last week, but now I'm all out. And this laptop I'm using doesn't even have Photoshop! I had to use Corel Paint Pro! Horror of horrors!! So I apologize for the unspectacular quality of this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!! But I won't complain too much... they did let us in there today so Verizon could install FiOS. Light speed, baby!!

Okay, I wanted at least one of the female Mandalorians from the EE Exclusive, so I went eBay to snag her loose. I'm sure I'm not the only guy whose done it either. It was cheaper than buying the entire set of repaints just to get one new Mando sculpt. And while there is something a little sketchy about essentially wanting to buy Boba Fett in drag, it's not nearly as weird as this Steve Simmons YouTube cartoon I stumbled upon. Heck, my comic looks downright tasteful compared to that.

I'm just embarrassed by this week's comic. I'm still not in the new house. I didn't think I'd be... the closing is scheduled for Friday, but I was hoping for a miracle. That didn't happen. So I'm still updating this thing on my wife's laptop, which doesn't have Photoshop. But it gets worse. I can't get Corel to launch now. So I had to resort to using Windows Paint to put together my strip. PAINT!!!!! You'd think I was putting together an edition of GPD or something. And I did it on the same week that Jonathan Caustrita from Tiki Coladas decided to add a link to my site. I couldn't feel more lame. The only good thing to come of this is I know one day I'll look back on these weeks and laugh and laugh. I wish I could say you'll do the same when you read this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!
