Another $25 winner!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 01.30.08 12:01am
StarWarsGuide.net picked it's third winner last Friday, and we're here to announce it a mere five days later! That's timely news for you, isn't it? This week's winner is the one and only Scott Kellum! Well... he's probably not the only Scott Kellum. Scott's a common enough name. Kellum doesn't seem all that unusual. Hmmmmm... a Nexis search turns up 102 matches. That's actually more than I expected. So... um... this week's winner was the particular Scott Kellum who entered this specific contest.

You too could be $25 richer like this one Scott Kellum. All you gotta do is enter and win the contest! Give it a try! Nothing's stopping you! Except your sloth and lack of creativity. Maybe you'll be inspired by looking at last week's winner of The Bill Cable is a Genius contest at StarWarsGuide.net

All the dirt
Posted by: Tresob Yr 02.06.08 12:01am
You have to hand it to Hasbro: when it comes to troopers, they will leave no stone unturned, no color scheme unpainted, and no regiment un-kitbashed. I am, of course, referring to the super-cool, Dirty-Kimono-Hawkbat Battalion clone trooper. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of soft-goods. They always fray at the edges, and they always betray the figure's scale when you photograph them. But when you throw a little brown handkerchief on an Evolutions Clone Trooper to transform it into a poncho-wearing extra from a spaghetti space western, you do all right in my book.

Wa tetu dat uta, gentle readers! Beedo here. Hasbro has sent CC.com their schedule of Q&A sessions up until June. Now, while I'm sure there are a LOT of questions I'd like to ask Hasbro over the course of the year, I can't think them all up at once, and many will be determined by releases and rumours as they become available in the months to come. So if you have any questions you would like to pose – especially if it can be done in a humorous way – please SEND THEM IN. It'll help fill out our Q&A sessions with more varied topics to appeal to a wider audience. It'll help get more important information on our hobby back to you, the public who wants to know. It'll mean I won't have to do as much work, and will cut down on the number of weekly requests I'll be putting in for more 3¾" Rodian action figures. Having said that, here's our first couple of questions for the New Year:

Another week, another bloody $25 winner!

There's nothing so satisfying as a bit of the ol' Ultraviolence. I've been doing this strip for what, almost 7 years now? I've maimed and brutalized dozens, if not hundreds of our lovable Cantina patrons. But nobody ever gave me $25 bucks for it.

So I gotta say I'm a bit upset that StarWarsGuide.net just gave Francisco Davila $25 for using my bloody designs in the Bill Cable is a Genius contest. I mean... all the dismemberments. All the pulpings. All that work, and I've never seen a dime. Where's the love for Bill?

Bah, I guess I'm just jealous. And you could be the next person of whom I'm jealous! But you gotta enter the contest. And I can't think of a better way for you to get your creative juices flowing than to check out the latest winner of The Bill Cable is a Genius contest at StarWarsGuide.net

Bad Dog
Posted by: Tresob Yr 02.13.08 12:01am
Ever notice how almost no one ever seems to have to go to the bathroom in epic adventure films like Star Wars? People have to take care of business at some point, but we're just left to assume Han and Chewie ducked into the lavatory on the Death Star while escaping Stormtroopers or that Jango Fett just finished "powdering his nose" before Obi-wan barged into his apartment on Kamino.

Something had to leave a pile for Jar Jar to step in when he was wondering Mos Espa, so it isn't like all the creatures in the galaxy far, far away just have more efficient digestive systems.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy scatological humor, because it makes up the punchline in this week's photo-comic.

CHAPTER 15: EVERYBODY GETS INTO THE ACT

Emulate Bill Cable - win $25!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 02.13.08 12:01am
So... uh... apparently the winner of this week's Bill Cable is a Genius Contest is one Steve Renner from Indiana. Of course you wouldn't know this by visiting the StarWarsGuide.net web site, because his entry hasn't yet been posted! Getting ready to do the update tonight I popped on over to get our winner... and I found it's missing. So I E-mailed Todd and he said something about being in the throes of marital bliss all weekend, so he couldn't post anything.

He promised to post it Wednesday sometime, so it might even be up on the site by the time you read this. There are still a few weeks remaining if you too would like your shot at a $25 prize. So get crackin'!!

Bill Cable is going to All-Con!!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 02.13.08 12:01am
So a couple months ago Todd Carlton (of Super Collector Wish Book fame) approached me with his All-Con Cable Original requests. It's become something of a tradition. He brings in a few Star Wars celebs. I draw Cable Originals of the characters they played. He gives the drawings to the actors. It's a nice gesture on his part, and it's been a great experience for me. Hell, Gerald Home can barely contain his glee every time he sees me because of the Squidhead art I drew for him.

So I'm finishing up the particulars with Todd, and he says to me "You should come down here and deliver the art in person." And I say "Nah. That's a long trip." And he says "Aw come on... you'll be my guest!" I sort of blew it off, until I told my wife about it. She told me I had to do it! She's way more impressed with my art than I ever am, (hell, I still think I'm a hack) so she really thinks I should get out there and show it off.

So I'm headed to All-Con... my first convention as an "artist." I'll be selling sketches. Apparently I'll be talking on a web comic panel. Todd failed to mention this to me... the creator of Last Stop sent me and E-mail out of the blue the he, I and the creator of Tiki Coladas would be doing it. Thanks for the heads-up, Todd. Sure... make me talk in front of a room full of people about a topic I don't know the first damn thing about. "Mr. Cable... how do you create your strip?" "Well... uh... people usually send me ideas, and then I use Photoshop." It's gonna be enthralling. Enchanting even!

So all you people in Dallas, and those willing to travel there, be sure to stop by and say hi to me at All-Con. Maybe buy a sketch. I'm supposed to do those with Sharpies or something at cons, right? I always see the dudes with Sharpies. What the hell kinda paper do I use for that? God, this is gonna be a train wreck...

A hairy proposition
Posted by: Bill Cable 02.20.08 12:01am
It's been kind of a long week. I got all kinds of stuff going on. PSWCS T-shirt and meeting stuff. Job search stuff. Work stuff. So I was lucky to be able to find a couple minutes to throw together a comic. Given that, I can't be too unhappy with the results. I think I turned out something chuckle-worthy. I also learned a valuable lesson: Even when trying to make him look disheveled, never again draw Walrusman with three-day stubble. The results were... not as intended.

Bask in my half-assed effort in this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Cantina surfers...Rise of the Rejects
Posted by: Tresob Yr 02.20.08 12:01am
As if this site alone didn't provide you with enough collecting humor and wisdom to see you through the week, we thought we'd share some highlights of our own web surfing in this update.

In the midst of all this Toy Fair hullabaloo, collectors have been madly forwarding each other a link to Star Wars toys that never were. We're talking real one's this time, not the goofy rejected toy parodies like "The Force" action figure.

Star Wars Figures that Didn't Make the Cut

Jason "ToyOtter" Geyer reveals some pretty wild concept art for rejected toy ideas that he and his comrades proposed to Pepsi during its epic promotion of the doomed Episode One.

I can easily see Lucasfilm taking another look at some of these items ten years later. I mean, if Hasbro is willing to make toys of rejected movie concepts, why not make toys of rejected toy concepts?

And, you'll notice, that some of these "rejected" toys have actually seen production elsewhere. While Pepsi might have turned up its nose to the R2-D2 slide projector, Nikko recently manufactured an R2 home theater. Although we never saw the Original Trilogy Foosball table, Wal-Mart ran with an ROTS version.

On the one hand, I can see why the Jedi mood ring was a little too corny and the Carbonite-Han mini-fridge a little too creepy. On the other hand, the Cockpit Sun Shade seems too good an opportunity to miss. Heck, I'd cut out little eye-holes in General Veers and drive around with the thing taped to my windshield all the time if I had one (which is maybe the real reason why they never made it).

I also imagine there will be floods of fans trying to produce their own Jabba Bean Bag Chairs and Bespin desk lamps after seeing the designs here.

Anyway, before I give away all the too-cool-to-be-made concepts in the attempt to whet your appetites, hop on over to Toy Otter's site...

Rejected! A long, long time ago…

Elsewhere on the Internet...Clicking random ad-links over at BBspot.com led me to Jek Porkins and Ponda Baba in: Haunted House Candy Hunt over at I-Mockery.com.

The game appears to have been up for quite a while, and I can't say I bothered playing it long enough to beat it. Nevertheless, it features everyone's favorite overweight rebel pilot holding hands with one of the Cantina's scummiest villains as they explore a haunted mansion. As far as I can tell, there really is no reason why this game needed to feature these guys as playable characters other than for the draw of Star Wars fans that would inevitably ensue. The old-school C64 gameplay style certainly isn't its most endearing feature, I can tell you that much. Fortunately, there are some fun Star Wars allusions when the player characters die...which is often.

The Look
Posted by: Tresob Yr 02.20.08 12:01am
Lego-people should be happy...even the ones being suffering under an oppressive, totalitarian, absolute monarchy.

After all, shouldn't a band of freedom fighters at least appear to take some modicum of satisfaction in the righteousness of their political subversion?

Sadly, not all Lego-people can express the joy and hope that we want to instill in our children, but they can reveal how even role models of democracy might struggle with a hard life to achieve their goals.

Or, as the Lego-rebels teach us, freedom don't come easy.

But honestly... using my American Idol parody to do an American Idol parody?? Pure laziness!

There are just two weeks remaining to enter the contest for a chance to win $25. Then after that the grand prize winner will be awarded a hundred bones and a Cable Original drawing. That's real, serious cash, baby! So send in an entry! Surely you can come up with something a little more creative than the latest winner of The Bill Cable is a Genius contest at StarWarsGuide.net

We were stunned two weeks ago to receive an invitation to Hasbro's Toy Fair event in NYC on Feb 16th. Us?? I guess sending the odd question to the Hasbro Q&A on occasion has given us some legitimacy within the industry. That's just... wrong.

We sent our roving reporter BRADP over to the New York to get us the story, and get it he did. It's a rather straightforward, non-CreatureCantina style story. I was hoping for photos of the little figures holding the CC.com SUCKS sign. Or maybe them posed in various risque positions. I guess we still need to get BRADP up to speed a bit. But what he wrote is great stuff, which I'm sure you'll enjoy. So check it out!

Cantina Surfers: Star Wars Summaries
Posted by: Tresob Yr 02.27.08 12:01am
I remember the time when I first realized there was a complicated backstory to Star Wars. I was in high school...and I was wearing out my VHS copy of the movie. Grand Moff Tarkin strolled into the Death Star briefing room and announced that the Emperor had just dissolved the Senate and that local governors would now be controlling their systems...or something to that effect. Holy banthas! This "kid's movie" that I had been enjoying all my life suddenly had much broader social implications and historical allusions. How was it that I had missed the richly textured environment that had been so painstakingly crafted as a backdrop for this sci-fi adventure? How had I gone a decade and a half without realizing the complexity of the Star Wars universe? Well, probably because I spent the most of my life thinking of Star Wars according to this featured YouTube video...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=EBM854BTGL0

I'm pretty sure that kid's parents are gunning to get her a spot on a Welch's commercial...although I really think some video-effects artist should take the time to splice her out of her parents' kitchen and drop her in the Cantina.

Up next (via BBSpot.com), the Episode IV Gif... Foldsfive pretty much captures the essence of a five year old's impressions of Star Wars in a charming and highly pixilated animated gif:

Death of a Vanguard
Posted by: Tresob Yr 02.27.08 12:01am
The repaint/kitbash wave is coming on pretty strong in my neck of the woods. There's a certain twisted logic that Pax Bonkik is actually a better version of Greedo than the even the vintage collection Greedo was. There was, no doubt, a sigh of relief among investors when it became clear that R1-B1 was not going to be a straight repack of his Episode One incarnation. Personally, however, I was most pleased by the Vanguard kitbash. I was quite relieved to see that his sleeveless vest revealed the shoulder articulation that had been missing on the Endor troopers. Plus, I was a total mine-noob back in my early days of Star Wars Battlefront, so it's great to have this little guy on my desk without having to drop thirty-five bucks on some exclusive BF2 battlepack. Now, if Hasbro could just get around to releasing the rest of the BF2 figures in single packs.

What an arrogant son of a b...

A lot of good things came out of Toy Fair 2008. Hasbro has an impressive Star Wars line-up. We should be loving quality product all year long.

But the really interesting thing that came out of Toy Fair was a rather comical instance of haughtiness on the part of one "D_Martin" from Rebelscum. He wrote up his official Toy Fair wrap-up, and couldn't help sticking his thumb in the eye of all the inferior people who had the nerve to attend the event alongside him.

I mean, if Kevin Meher could do it, anybody could do it! You need to enter by Friday to be considered for the final $25 prize. If you win that $25 prize, you'll be in contention for the $100 + Cable Original GRAND PRIZE! But you can only win by entering, just like the latest winner of The Bill Cable is a Genius contest at StarWarsGuide.net

Cup o' Jango
Posted by: Tresob Yr 03.05.08 12:01am
I'm digging Casual Attire Jango. I'm pretty sure that it's the first time we've seen a version of a Star Wars bad guy in his play clothes...home from work, ready to kick back, play some catch with his son, and maybe down a cold one watching the big game. Now, all we need is a Fetts' Apartment Playset.

There is, however, one minor issue with this figure, and it's not the conspicuously missing battle gauntlets...

A contrite retraction
Posted by: Bill Cable 03.05.08 12:01am
Hey guys... I come here today with a heavy heart. Last week I posted an article blasting D_Martin for what I thought to be an unjustified rant against non-Rebelscum web site contributors. It has since been brought to my attention that his complaints may have in actuality been wholly justified. I've been sent a selection of outtake photographs that were ruined by our own discourteous roaming reporter.

OK, that one's not so bad. You can still clearly make out the product. No idea why BRADP might have been holding up that sign. They could have cropped that out though...

Now that one's a little worse. But people step through photos all the time. No need to berate other fan site contributors for such an honest mistake...

Now that one... well again you can still see the product pretty clearly. But really, BRADP should have noticed the camera there.

Ooop... now that one he's clearly intentionally stepping into the photo. Bad form, BRADP! Bad form!

AW COME ON! What did you do, run up and hug the guy before he shot the photo?? I mean, a guy's holding up a camera and you just throw your face in front of the lens?? I could see how such a thing might upset the guy.

What the?... G-G-Gggg... DUDE!! That is just totally uncalled for! Nobody wants to see your patches!! I mean... you can't even see any of those Clone Wars figures! I'll tell you, it takes some big brass ones to stand in front of a guy who's clearly trying to take a photo and force him to take a picture of you instead. It's just breathtaking.

In light of this new evidence, I'd like to extend an apology to D_Martin. I totally understand where you're coming from now. Dealing with frustrations such as this must have really gotten under you skin, and as such your diatribe against other fan sites was altogether warranted.

Many thanks to STU K for his hilarious Photoshop art creations!

And now for an actual, legitimate apology
Posted by: Bill Cable 03.12.08 12:01am
So a couple weeks ago I wrote a reaction piece to a story published on RebelScum. This article was a piece of satire. And while it was highly critical of the article, it was not written as a personal attack against the article's author, D_Martin. My intention was to critique what I felt was a demeaning, mean-spirited, and haughty article which diminished the import of what I feel are many valuable, but admittedly smaller fan sites. Sadly some people have misinterpreted my article as a personal attack. Among those people are individuals whom I consider to be close friends. While I understand why some might come away from my article feeling it was a personal attack, especially those with a personal relationship with the parties involved, that was not my intention and that is not what it is. Still, I don't want any hard feelings from unintended interpretations of my article to ruin any friendships. As such, I'd like to extend an apology to anybody who was offended by my article because they took it as a personal attack on D_Martin. In particular, I'd like to apologize to Shane Turgeon.

Hasbro reveals genius Boba Fett marketing campaign
Posted by: Tresob Yr 03.12.08 12:01am
In what might be the cleverest marketing strategy that Hasbro has ever deployed, the toy manufacturer has just revealed that its previously released Thirtieth Anniversary Collection Stormtrooper figure is actually Boba Fett in Stormtrooper Disguise.

"At first I was confused," one collector said. "I've waited 28 years to see what Boba Fett really looked like under that helmet, and to think that when I finally got to take a peek, it was nothing other than a kitbashed head from a scarred stormtrooper! Then, I read online somewhere that Hasbro planned it all from the beginning. How could I have ever doubted Hasbro?"

Another collector observed, "I must buy at least ten Boba Fett figures a year, so I was really hoping Hasbro would get the removable helmet version done right. For a while, I thought Hasbro really phoned in this figure, but when I realized how deep what they were doing really was, I was totally blown away."

Some fans have pointed out that Hasbro previously released a Titanium Boba Fett with removable helmet that lacked any scars, but Hasbro has announced that figure was actually a figure of Mandalore the Ressurector disguised as Boba Fett.

"We're experimenting with the genre of the disguised action figure," a Hasbro representative informed. "We hope to increase the worth of our product by releasing figures and then letting fans and collectors realize they didn't buy what they thought they were getting. It's somehow like they get to discover they are getting more than what they originally paid for!" Future versions of the TAC Stormtrooper will be released with a sticker overlay indicating the change of identity.

I imagine you must be very busy between putting together your new cartoon, live action show, video game, and giving your stamp of approval on countless sundry items. It must take quite a toll on your time...which leads me to my next question: How's your love life?

I only ask because I care, George...and from what I've been seeing as of late, you've got me worrying quite a bit.

I'm your friend, and I want what's best for you...for us.

See, I've just gone and done something pretty drastic, something I never thought I'd be capable of doing. I intentionally threw away an unopened Star Wars action figure -- a new one at that. In this lengthy installment of the 095 saga, Beedo takes us inside the invisible world of droids, introducing his new super-articulated TAC-bots to their less mobile POTF2 ancestors. Let's just say that the new models are not reverse compatible.

Order 95 is an Internet-wide, epic crossover photo-comic recounting the ongoing conflict between the classic, beefcake monster figures of the 90's Star Wars Renaissance and the resculpts, repaints, and repacks seeking to replace them. Read all of the O95 submissions from the O95 HQ here at Creature Cantina!

And now that ROTS is finally getting the resculpt treatment, we look forward to seeing some new submissions! So get cracking, all you photonovelists! Beedo isn't saying quits on Order 95, and neither should you...

Same as it ever was...

(Also, here's shameless plug: Transformers Fans should check out my spectacular review of a knockoff Kabaya Metroplex over at Scary Crayon.com ...when you're done reading the CC.com anniversary update, of course! Scary-Crayon.com is a lot what Creature Cantina might be like if it didn't have creatures or a cantina.)
