Torture-Me Han Posted by: Tresob Yr 11.07.07 12:01am Hasbro has finally given us the Bespin Torture Chamber set. It may well be one of the most intentionally disturbing action figure concepts that they have rolled out in a while. But once the children tire of strapping rebels in and inflicting human rights violations on them, how will Hasbro feed kids' new voyeuristic appetites? Maybe a Leia-licking Jabba, complete with gaze-averting C-3PO? An Incest-Action Medical Bay Luke and Leia two pack? Baby-launching, Maternity Ward Padme? We can only hope so.

CHAPTER 1: A RELUCTANT MEETING

Repayment Posted by: Bill Cable 11.14.07 12:01am How does the Flame Gem arc end? If you want to know I guess you'll need to read this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Longshot Posted by: Tresob Yr 11.14.07 12:01am So a few weeks ago, I decided that I needed to reduce the total volume of space occupied by my action figure collection. Rather than actually get rid of stuff, I thought it would be easier to open some older figures, and those bulky, boxy Jedi Council scenes seemed like a good place to start. When I began to wrench free Even Piell, however, I discovered that the Chinese laborers opted to secure the figure in a most unusual way...resulting in the image for this week's comic...and turning his name into something of a pun.

CHAPTER 2: BROKERING A BOUNTY HUNTER

Children's Hospitals Toy Drive 2007!!! Posted by: Bill Cable 11.14.07 12:01am It's that time of year again, people! Time to donate those crates and crates of old POTF2 figures collecting dust in your attics to the children who will love and appreciate them!
Each year the good folks at Garrison Carida visit 8 or 9 children's hospitals and hand out Star Wars toys to the patients. And each year they need to replenish their stock of toys via donations. This will be the fifth year that the Pennsylvania Star Wars Collecting Society will be collecting toys for Carida.
PSWCS will be holding two live collection events... The first at Steel City Con the first weekend of December, and the second at Toy Cave on December 8th. If you don't live in Pennsylvania and can't make it to one of these events, you can still participate by mailing donations to us. For more details visit the official Toy Drive web page!
Come on... you know you still have cases of double of Episode 1 Darth Maul figures. You bought them up thinking you'd put your kids through college, but now you can't even get a buck for them off eBay. So do something good with them! Make some sick kids happy! What better celebration of the holidays than to hook up some Stormtroopers so every kid they visit next year will come away with a little souvenir to play with?

The new hotness Posted by: Bill Cable 11.21.07 12:01am Money. It can do a lot for a fella. Just like in this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Thanksgivin' Posted by: Tresob Yr 11.21.07 12:01am For those of us from the States with apparently very disposable incomes, Thanksgiving is the time to take a look around at our material wealth and appreciate the fact that we are Americans buying these toys and not Chinese factory workers making them.

A startling realization! Posted by: Bill Cable 12.12.07 12:01am I'm really running late in writing up the intro to this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Demonstration of Power Posted by: Tresob Yr 12.12.07 12:01am It was a long an arduous process of skilled craft, military-precise construction, and laborious patience, but the technology was finally assembled and completed under the careful eye of Grand Moff Tarkin and the ever-looming presence of the Emperor's watchdog, Lord Vader.
The question remaining was, would it make an effective display of power when finally activated...

In lieu of Santa coming to town... Posted by: Tresob Yr 12.26.07 12:01am You better pay up;
you better not spy,
And never dump spice
when Imperials pry.

He's looking for you
With tracking device.
He'll take you in
for the right price.
Holiday Fett is hunting you down.
He's known for carbon freezing
The smugglers that he takes.
If the bounty is "dead or alive"
He might just disintegrate...
You...
With flamethrower wrists
and a sawed off ray-gun,
With funky-painted armor
from a Mandalorian,
Holiday Fett is hunting you down
So...
You better pay up;
you better not spy,
And never dump spice
when Imperials pry.
'Coz Holiday Fett is hunting you down!

Hasbro Q&A: The Holiday Special Edition Posted by: Beedo Sookcool 12.26.07 12:01am For the first time in like six months we here at CC.com decided to participate the the Hasbro Q&A program. Yes, we're lazy like that. But Bill got this E-mail saying "Last chance in 2007" and figured "Well, if it's our last chance we'd better get off our lazy asses and take advantage of it! And this we did. Enjoy the Qs and As...
Hasbro Q&A 2007 number high-40s or low 50 range, I think...

CHAPTER 8: THE QUEST REVEALED

A very Star-Warsy Christmas! Posted by: Bill Cable 12.26.07 12:01am Merry day-after-Christmas, everybody! I hope you pulled in an impressive haul. For the first time in a long time I scored a pretty decent assortment of SW merch. Usually people don't bother buying me SW stuff, since they don't have any idea what I have or want. But this year I had a few people come through with good stuff. I know... wonders never cease! So, without further ado, let's get to the booty...
First we have some Star Wars gifts I was expecting... from the RebelScum Vintage Secret Santa. This year I picked up two items. First, a 3PO bobble head thing. If I remember correctly these originally launched for like $69.95. I laughed and passed... I wasn't going to spend that much even if they did do 3PO. Now I think they go for around $3.00 on eBay.
The other item my Secret Santa got me was something I'd been looking for for a long time, but never pulled the trigger. It's a dianoga (or Trash Compactor Monster. I haven't gotten into the Vintage beasties, yet, but this guy just fits in too well with a complete loose set.
Now, the person who really went out on a limb this year was my Aunt Elaine. She knows I collect Star Wars, but nothing more specific. She took a chance and bought me the coolest Christmas ornament I've seen this year. It features three posters from the Original Trilogy. Very classy! Much nicer than Vader in a stocking cap!
The next gift I got was probably the nicest. Totally unexpected. Included a heartfelt card. It was from Darth Danno. I got a package in the mail and was like "What could this be?" It turned out to be a DVD of The Force Among Us. Danno is featured in the film! He wrote that he's the guy in the green hat and sweater doing the Yoda impression. (at least I think it was a green heat and sweater... I left the card at home). The card really touched me, and I genuinely appreciate the gift. I also feel like a total jerk for not sending out a Christmas card to him. I didn't sent one to Tresob either, but for some reason I don't feel nearly as bad about that.
And check it... it's autographed!!
The final two gifts I got weren't really Christmas gifts... I just received them the week before Christmas. They are two long-awaited custom acrylic cases from Oscar's Cases! I've had these two bootlegs sitting wrapped in bubble wrap on my bookshelf for like 6 months... just waiting for one of my daughters to smash them with an errant football throw. Luckily that never happened. And now they're protected in hard plastic. The first one is an "Hombre Espacial" C-3PO in diving suit. I'm not up on the most current info on these, but I think they've pretty much been debunked as true bootlegs. I think the current thinking is that they were created recently to take advantage of the collector market. But don't quote me on that... just the rambles I heard around C4 time. I'm thrilled I splurged for one when they first hit the market...
The second is absolutely a true and very rare Vintage bootleg. It's a Haboruja bootleg 3PO from Hungary. You can read all about these at The Star Wars Collector's Archive by searching for Haboruja. I'm thrilled to finally have this one encased. And the cases couldn't have arrived at a more festive time. Feliz Navidad my good friend Oscar!
It was truly a Force-filled Christmas at Casa Cable. I hope everyone out there had as nice of a holiday, and scored all the Star Wars swag they could smuggle!

The foregone conclusion Posted by: Bill Cable 01.02.08 12:01am Did anybody seriously think this story arc could end any other way? I hope not. Catch the finale in this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

CHAPTER 9: SITH STONES AND ANCIENT TOMES

010108 Posted by: Tresob Yr 01.02.08 12:01am This year, no one can accuse me of not having flipped to at least one page of my day calendar...(with a little help from my plastic friends at least).

2008 Star Wars Resolutions Posted by: Bill Cable 01.02.08 12:01am Each year the people in the world who actually want to improve themselves make New Year's Resolutions which they pledge to keep and rarely do. I was thinking whether I could apply such a practice to my Star Wars collecting for the upcoming year. And then I was thinking "would something like that be funny?" I concluded "not really" and "almost certainly not," respectively.
But then I realized this is CreatureCantina.com we're talking about, so it wouldn't be any worse than our normal content! So here we go...
- Resolution #1: I won't accidentally click on any links to Steve Comenzo's web site, even when the dummies on the PSWCS E-mail list post links to photos there. You'd think they'd have learned their lesson on this by now. I mean, how many people do I need to ban from the club before they realize what's not appropriate to post there?
- Resolution #2: Stop making low-probability toy runs. Gas is just too damned expensive. I don't need to be driving to 3 Walmarts and two Toys R Uses every other day in the hope that something new was put out. I'd pay less if I went to a scalp shop. No, the better solution is to network with other collectors. If I happen to see the new wave, I'll pick up extras to share. And everyone is happy.
- Resolution #3: Make CreatureCantina.com funny again! (we all need at least one resolution to break almost immediately)
- Resolution #4: Keep up with the Hasbro Q&As. They did that crap for all of 2007, and answered every question we sent in! Why the hell didn't we send in more often? That's like content without all the work, and it's FREE! I think I'm going to put my man Beedo on this case!
- Resolution #5: Use more user submitted ideas for The Cantina. I've been doing this long-ass story arc for what seems like months! The thing practically wrote itself. I felt it was inspired. But in doing so, I neglected all the people sending in ideas. So I need to wrap that thing up and start having other people write the thing for me!
- Resolution #6: Remember this list was supposed to be about collecting not about the stupid site...
- Resolution #7: Save up and get some acrylic Oscar's Cases for my Tri-logo run. Hopefully soon they'll be on display again, and they look like ass in those Star Cases!
- Resolution #8: Make it to at least one Vintage collector gathering. I missed one over the holidays because I was traveling for the holidays, and I was really disappointed. I'm planning for Dragon*con if nothing else.
I suppose that should keep me on the straight-and-narrow, should I be able to keep them all. And that'll make for a good 2008!!

Karma Posted by: Bill Cable 01.09.08 12:01am OK folks... this is the last part of the Flame Gem story arc. You know what that means? It means I can't milk it for even one more strip. And that means I need some ideas. So send some in! cable@creaturecantina.com. In the mean time, check out how what goes around comes around in this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Return of the Sith Posted by: Tresob Yr 01.09.08 12:01am Christmas time is over, which means huge deals in the clearance aisle, and monster return lines.

Bill Cable is a Genius - the contest Posted by: Bill Cable 01.09.08 12:01am We've all read "Bill Cable is a genius" the statement. I mean... it's obvious. Everyone knows it. Hell, it's the mantra in the Rebelscum Blu-ray v/s HD DVD thread in Wuher's. But I'm sure this is the first instance of "Bill Cable is a genius" in contest form.
How did this contest come about? Well, Geoff Carlton, author of the Star Wars Super Collector's Wishbook wanted to give away some money. I guess the book is selling so well that he has to ditch some cash lest his wallet explode, permanently damaging his right buttock. He already sits at a 30-degree angle as it is to compensate for the hefty cash roll. And I guess he figured "What better way to give out cash than to reward those dorks who read CreatureCantina.com?"
And thus the contest was born.
So you need to ask yourself - "Do I want a chance at $25 per week for the next 8 weeks?"
"Do I want the $100 grand prize AND a Cable Original drawing of my choice?"
If the answer to either of those is "Yes" then you should check out: The Bill Cable is a Genius contest at StarWarsGuide.net
We'll be posting the weekly winners' entries here every week. So be sure to check back.

Our readers write! Posted by: Bill Cable 01.16.08 12:01am Last week I sent out a request to our dedicated readers for ideas for the strip. The response wasn't exactly what I expected. See what I'm talking about in this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Boba's Boo-Boo Posted by: Tresob Yr 01.16.08 12:01am With the Crystal Skull (I'm guessing it's aliens!) pushing Indiana Jones merchandising to a fevered pitch, it is only inevitable that the geeky makers of action figure photo-comics are going to launch a series of Indy-Star Wars franchise crossovers, and I aim to have me a sweet seat on that bandwagon...

Big E's 2007 year in review! Posted by: Bill Cable 01.16.08 12:01am I know this is a few weeks late. It used to be Big E wrote this yearly report especially for CreatureCantina.com. But then he had to go and make his own news site! So now it gets posted over there. man... help a guy build up a reputation so he can set out on his own, and this is the thanks I get??? ANYway... this was posted over at ImperialHolocron.com a few weeks back, but I wanted to make sure to share it here. Enjoy the year that was!
Big E's Best & Worst of 2007!

Now in Technicolor! Posted by: Beedo Sookcool 01.16.08 12:01am I just threw together this little vignette because I had the figures to hand. And let's all be thankful that comic book colour technology has moved on since the 1970s, shall we? Enjoy!

CHAPTER 11: AND NOW A WORD FROM DARTH MALEK

Somebody is $25 richer! Is it you? Posted by: Bill Cable 01.16.08 12:01am StarWarsGuide.net has announced the first weekly winner of their Bill Cable is a Genius contest. Could it be you? Did you even bother to enter? A pity if you didn't, because you could have been just like Marin Estes of Virginia! Congrats Marin!
If you missed out this week, you still have many more chances to enter! So go do that. If you need inspiration, check out last week's winner of The Bill Cable is a Genius contest at StarWarsGuide.net

True Posted by: Bill Cable 01.23.08 12:01am OK, this week some of our readers actually did send in ideas for the comic strip. Thanks guys! I know I don't pay out $25 a pop for them, and you're probably spending all your efforts trying to score that StarWarsGuide.net cash, so I really appreciate the effort. The idea I used actually expanded upon last week's theme. Check it out in this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

4-Lorn Posted by: Tresob Yr 01.23.08 12:01am Action Figures are getting a lot like media. Not only are they constantly being re-released with updated features or repacked with all kinds of bonus material, but they also have a nasty habit of being re-released in a new format that renders all of your old collection pretty much obsolete.

Indiana Jones and the Sith Stone Posted by: Darth Danno 01.23.08 12:01am CreatureCantina.com is proud to present the next chapter of Darth Danno's thrilling adventure saga "Indiana Jones and the Sith Stone."
CHAPTER 12: WHEN IS A MAN... MORE THAN A MAN?

Hilarious person wins $25!!! Posted by: Bill Cable 01.23.08 12:01am StarWarsGuide.net has announced the second weekly winner of their Bill Cable is a Genius contest. This one actually made me laugh out loud. The second panel - brilliant! I'm still smiling over it. Just the idea of Vader in that situation reacting that way tickles my funny bone. Congrats to Javier Davila, a true CreatureCantina.com fan and a funny guy.
You too could win $25, if you can put together something as chuckle-worthy as Javier's strip. If you want a laugh, check out his winning submission in The Bill Cable is a Genius contest at StarWarsGuide.net

Another submitted idea! Posted by: Bill Cable 01.23.08 12:01am Saved yet again from actual creativity by my faithful readers. Enjoy this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Taking a backseat Posted by: Tresob Yr 01.30.08 12:01am All of these mini-fig rich LEGO sets are certainly a welcome addition for troop builders, but one has to ask whether the influx of these younger-demographic kids' toys are making the whole hobby a little too juvenile. You decide in this week's comic!
