PSWCS turns 7!
Posted by: Bill Cable 08.22.07 12:01am
Earlier this week The Pennsylvania Star Wars Collecting Society celebrated our 7-year anniversary. What started with 10 people meeting at the West Shore Public Library on a Saturday in August has grown to an expansive club of over 330 people, a mailing list that handles over 500 messages per month, and some of the best friends I have on the planet. As the club's founder, I couldn't be more proud of what it's become. As the club's president, I'm most proud of our charitable work with Garrison Carida. We'll be holding another series of live collection events this December to benefit children's hospitals across PA and surrounding states... so keep an eye out!

So if you're in PSWCS, heft a glass in celebration! If you're not and you live in PA, what the hell are you waiting for?! The E-mail volume can be controlled! We got this nifty "Daily Digest" option that packs all the mail into a single message... very convenient! You won't regret joining!

Last week I used an idea this guy "Decaf" sent in pretty much verbatim. He sent in a couple other ideas with it. I read the one, and it was good... but I didn't want to exactly use it. Still, it inspired me to do a similar strip... which just happens to be this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

The Big Jewel is a literary humor site. We have a Star Wars-related piece up this week, about Jabba the Hut in a 12-step program:

My Name Is Jabba And I'm An Alcoholic

And we have one more Star Wars piece in our archive, about Han Solo's move into politics:

Han Solo Prepares For The Mos Eisley Mayoral Election

Enjoy! And if you want to link to them, feel free.

Figure on a Clamshell
Posted by: Tresob Yr 08.29.07 12:01am
In some kind of deranged frenzy, I actually ordered myself the Obi-wan Yoda concept figures. The fact that they were a two pack made the fifteen dollars plus shipping a little easier to swallow than the concept Luke...which I never actually ended up getting despite all of my whining. Anyway, for that much money, you can expect me to be exploiting these figures in as many comics as possible. Just a warning...

Slowly and cautiously, I pushed the bathroom door open a crack to see what was going on outside. Dave watched for me and when he saw me, he nodded that all was well…for now. I nodded back and slowly shut the door. Glancing at my watch, I saw the time was already 5:00, only two hours until the convention closed for the day. I took a deep breath, centered my thoughts, and exited the bathroom in grand fashion, careful the door closed immediately behind me, so no one standing in line could get a glimpse of the "signing room’s" actual contents. Upon noticing my arrival, many of the gathered started bombarding me with questions. I raised my hands for silence, and then began my impromptu speech.

The city of Rosemont was not too happy regarding the events that took place at the Convention Center during WizardWorld Chicago ’07. The center had to be closed while the air conditioning units were replaced, so numerous shows and exhibitions had to be postponed or canceled in the interim, costing the city thousands upon thousands of dollars in revenue.

Hey loyal readers - keep those ideas rolling in! I used another one this week... sort of. His idea ended with all sorts of shooting with bad aim, something I've already covered quite a few times. I'm very pleased that I've managed to get my hands on at least one of the available corner pieces for the cantina bar sets. Not only did I manage to get one, but I even managed to get it on eBay without having to pay exorbitant scalpers fees. Apparently, no one else wanted to buy a non-mint carded M'iiyoon Onith, so my final bid, with shipping, ended up being under what it would cost me in a store. Pretty sweet. And this is the first TAC figure that I didn't really mind paying seven bucks for, given the coolness of the accessory. However, all that has pretty much nothing to do with this comic...other than the very disturbing back story that the cardback gives for M'iiyoon...

New Star Wars Christmas album
Posted by: Darth Danno 09.12.07 12:01am
That's right everyone! You're hearing it here at CC.com first. Set to be released some time in October, (exact date and price to be announced.) Now this isn't just some nobodys getting together and writing some Christmas jingles with a Star Wars theme, no sir! All those characters you know and love from all six films have decided to get into the act and try their hand, or should I say vocal chords, at the music biz. Here are some of the songs you'll hear, and who will be singing them!

  • Aayla Secura - Blue Christmas
  • A quartet of Hoth Troopers - Walking in a Winter Wonderland and
  • A quartet of Rebel Pilots - I saw Three Starships
Not to be outdone, the Empire got into the act with...
  • A quartet of Death Star Troopers - The Little Gunner Boy and
  • A quartet of Stormtroopers - White Christmas and
  • A quartet of Snowtroopers - (what else?) Frosty the Snowtrooper
  • The Jedi Council from "The Phantom Menace" - The Twelve Days of Christmas
  • Luke and Leia - I saw Mommy Kissing Vader Claus
  • Han and Chewbacca - Oh Wroshyr Tree
  • Obi Wan and Qui Gon - Jar Jar the Red faced Gungan
  • Darth Vader - Silent Knight
  • C3PO and R2D2 - The Death Star is Coming to Town
  • The Polis Massans - What Child is This?
  • Darth Maul and General Grievous - Dueling Around the Christmas Tree
  • Jango and Boba Fett - The First No-Disintegrations
  • Sy Snootles and the Max Rebo band - Jingle Bell Rock
  • Sebulba and the Mos Espa Podracers - Sleigh Ride

All these and more can be found on the regular edition, but my sources tell me there is a special edition in the works which will also contain the following:

The Entire Cantina singing Oh Little Town of Mos Eisley, under the direction of Wuhrer, backed up by Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes, AND the big news is none other than...The Emperor himself, reciting the tale of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. He even got Jabba the Hutt to read the part of Cindy Lou Who. Weather the special edition will just be the additional songs and story, or if it will include video footage as well, is yet to be determined. These items may be available at local retail outlets, or only sold via the web at such sites as Starwarsshop.com and CreatureCantina.com. I don't know about you, but news like this is music to my ears. Until next week...

Baldness epidemic runs rampant among female SW figures!
Posted by: Tresob Yr 09.12.07 12:01am
A new study from the Polis Massa Institute for Health and Cosmetics (PMIHC) confirms that baldness afflicts approximately 53% of participating female Star Wars action figure characters. In a survey conducted among 38 female characters, twenty were found to be completely or nearly bald, twelve were definitely not bald (although they might be using extensions, donning wigs, or adopting manly hair cuts), and six were declared to have indeterminate follicle mass.

The Twi'lek Galactic Slavers Council (TGSC) has issued a protest saying that the PMIHC findings will injure sales. In a recent press release, the TGSC argues that tentacles growing out of a female head are the racial equivalent of hair. The PMIHC has answered that female Twi'lek share other very obvious mammalian traits, thus a lack of scalp hair does constitute a form of mammalian pattern baldness. One should note, however, that the study did not take into account racial background or different versions of the same character and that the sample population consisted almost exclusively of figures discovered in a single collector's apartment.

Hasbro has indicated that it will be shifting numbers in favor of women possessing definite, observable scalp hair with the release of several upcoming Expanded Universe Comic Two-Packs.

Here's a complete breakdown of female hair rates:

Femme Fatales
Posted by: Tresob Yr 09.19.07 12:01am
Hasbro has released three female cantina aliens: Kabe, M'iiyoom, and Kitik.
One is a bat-lady. They suck blood.
One is a preying mantis. They have a tendency to kill and devour mates.
One, according to the cardback, has a "razor sharp tongue that is used in a deadly mating ritual."
Those are pretty much the current options if you want to hit on the ladies at the Cantina.
So does anyone think someone at Hasbro development has ever had problems with meeting women at bars?

New Star Wars video game plans scrubbed (Part I)
Posted by: Darth Danno 09.19.07 12:01am
Many times on this very website, I've reported new SW video games that would be hitting the market in the near future. Well, today I'm bringing you the story of one that won't.

It started off as an idea that truly had potential. Some no-name video game designer and part time Star Wars fan decided to approach Lucas Licensing to promote the idea of a Dejarik video game.

Here's the scenario: You start off on the bottom rung of the Dejarik circuit. (I didn't even know there was a Dejarik circuit, but that's beside the point.) Jabba the Hutt is only too happy to back your rising career, for a healthy percentage of the winnings. So you better keep winning to keep Jabba happy, ‘cause if he ain't happy, he's only going to be too happy to make the bounty hunters guild very happy by putting a contract out on you!

You start out with only four creatures: the Kintan Strider, K'lor'slug, Houjix, and Monnok. As you win more matches and earn more credits (after all, you are playing for money) you are able to add more holomonsters to your repertoire: the Mantellian Savrip, the Ng'ok, the Ghhhk, and the Grimtaash. As you rise into the upper echelons of Dejarik players, you may even acquire such magnificent beasts as the Molator, Rancor, Wampa, and the great and powerful Sarlaac. (A Sarlaac, in Dejarik? Whatever.) As you win more matches, you get the chance to unlock different secret opponents, and play on different worlds. Perhaps play against Boba Fett on Bespin, Padme on Polis Massa, or Darth Maul on Dantooine. The possibilities are endless. Some of the locales even feature timed games. Not only do you have to win, but you have to do it in a required length of time. For instance, you're playing a game on Hoth, right in the middle of the battle of Hoth. (Imperial Walkers marching across the frozen terrain, Star Destroyers lurking in orbit, waiting the catch the escaping Rebel fleet, and you find the time to play a game, let alone find someone to play against, riiiiiiiiiight.) You have to win the game and do it in time to catch your transport before it leaves, otherwise you'll be stuck, surrounded by a lot of Imperial troops, and a very angry Darth Vader who just had the Millenium Falcon escape from his grasp.

If you are able to beat all those you go up against, you get a chance to play against the Dejarik grand master himself: Chancellor Palpatine! The thing to keep in mind is, knowing who Palpatine becomes, (watch Episode III if you don't know what I'm talking about, but if you don't know what I'm talking about, you wouldn't be reading this article, or even visiting this website, unless you're just a fan of great artwork.) you can beat the Chancellor, just make sure you don't beat the pants off of him (does he even wear pants under all those robes? Let's move on, shall we? I'm rambling as it is.) As with all unsavory characters in the game, you beat them too badly, they could get mad and put a contract out on you, or even worse, just take you out themselves. What's the point if you win the game, but lose your life?

Next week, a portion of the dialogue I secretly recorded between the head of Lucas Licensing and the video game designer, and what went terribly, terribly wrong. You see, despite all of the designer's brilliant plans and schemes for this project, he seemed to overlook one ...small...thing...

The CantinaCCG releases new Bounty Hunters Expansion Pack!
Posted by: Tresob Yr 09.19.07 12:01am
With millions of kids returning to school, it’s the best time to re-launch the smash-hit, fan-based, collectible card game: The CantinaCCG - the geeky card game that permanently changed the face of recess and/or drinking games across the globe.

And there could hardly be a better way to get everyone pumped up for another round of exciting expansion cards than to start with the coolest bad boys (and gals) of the galaxy: BOUNTY HUNTERS!

So for the next four weeks, come back to the Cantina to download cards with bonuses that will kick The CantinaCCG bounty hunt round into hyperdrive...

Big Hands on Deck: Aurra Sing and Amanaman

First up in the BH series are the two aliens with the biggest hands in bounty hunting: Aurra Sing and Amanaman. As you would expect, both cards have modifications during the bounty hunt round. Aurra draws upon the lightning fast reflexes she acquired during her incomplete Jedi training, allowing her to wield a bonus weapon card. Meanwhile, Amanaman provides some excessive force (and excessive syllables), sometime at the cost of earnings (and the ability to pronounce his name).

Star Wars live-action TV series revealed!
Posted by: Bill Cable 09.19.07 12:01am
The mysteries surrounding George Lucas' long-in-development live-action television series have confounded fans and reporters alike since it was announced two-and-a-half long years ago at Celebration III. All we know so far is that the time period is set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and that it doesn't involve the Skywalker family directly. Well, the hard-working moles from CreatureCantina have broken through the mist, and are ready to reveal the true nature of Lucas' new project.

The title: Padawan Nation
The premise: 40 padawan learners are stranded on a deserted planet, where they're charged with creating their own utopian society. Can they survive and thrive without the direction of more experienced Jedi?

Amazingly, the series has already finished filming. Lucas, fearing interference and child labor laws, shot the series at the remote location without telling anybody. "When there's a chance these little munchkins might lop off each other's limbs, we didn't want anybody realizing the danger and coming in and shutting us down mid-season," Lucas explained. "Dismemberments... that's great TV!"

So why did Lucas go in this direction for his series? "I was thinking... what does everyone love watching? And it was obvious... people love watching little kids whine and argue. They also love to watch little kids get hurt. And if they can get to watch little kids suffer and starve... that's just icing on the cake!"

We question Mr. Lucas' thinking here. Does anybody out there really want to watch a bunch of kids on TV for an hour? Kids who do such exciting things as cook and farm? And govern? Sure... it's a wonderful social experiment... but that seems more the subject of a 2-hour documentary, not a 22-hour television series. I'm sure the liberals out there might be intrigued whether socialism can thrive in this type of scenario, but other than that I can't expect anybody to invest the time to watch this mess. Even with everybody talking about the show, and the Star Wars name behind it, we predict this show to be a historic flop.

New Star Wars video game plans scrubbed (Part II)
Posted by: Darth Danno 09.26.07 12:01am
All right folks! By now, I'm sure you've all been wondering what could possibly have gone wrong with plans for such an awesome and cool game such as Dejarik. Like I said, the game was meticulously crafted; yet one crucial element was lacking. Thanks to my network of spies and informants among the wretched hives of scum and villainy throughout the galaxy, I was able to acquire a recording of the conversation between the head of Lucas Licensing and the video game designer. So here it is, uncut and unedited for your reading pleasure. (I've put the dialogue from the head of Lucas Licensing in italics to help differentiate between who's speaking.

Do you have an unnatural affinity for Leia?

I received these plea for attention earlier this week. Now... I like Leia. She was hot in the bikini. She was hotter in ANH. But an entire site dedicated just to Leia... that's just a bit much to me. I mean, unless we're talking Leia's Metal Bikini a site dedicate only to Leia seems a bit much. But hey... that's just me. Anyway, here's this guy's press release...

Hello, I'm a huge Star Wars, and Princess Leia fan. I just launched a brand new Princess Leia site on September 22, 2007.

I have big plans and "very" high expectations for the site. I realize that it's going to take time, but just know this, I'm in it for the long run. I really need to get our name out there and need your help. It would really mean allot to me if you would consider becoming Affiliates or at the very least exchange Links with us. Every great Star Wars site has to start somewhere. We just need a fair chance and a little boost to get started. I will be eternally grateful if you will help us and promise to be a very loyal and faithful Affiliate!

I have Link Banners and Affiliate buttons. Just let me know if your willing to help us get started and I will send them to you. Here is my sites information.

  • Title: Princess Leia
  • Description: The definitive Princess Leia resource. Features Princess Leia information, cosplay, collections, hundreds of screenshots, and interactive forums.

Zuckuss really gets a kick out of the big guns – so much so that he gets a small boost to his weapon power when wielding them (but watch out...he gets a penalty for using weak weapons).

And then there's IG-88. All that lethal programming does him no good if he can't get past the droid detector!

Star Wars tricks and treats in store for October
Posted by: Darth Danno 10.03.07 12:01am
Can you believe it's already October??? If you remember last year at this time, I brought you the premiere of "Sith Mania". Now I had a lot of ideas for Sith Mania II, just none that grabbed me by the neck, slapped me around a bit, and made me say, "That's the one!" Now I had heard Lucasfilm was planning a Star Wars Halloween special, but if it were to be anything like the Star Wars Christmas special, that would be a horror in and of itself. So George himself flew out personally to see me, (hey, I can dream, right? Just like that dream I have about Jessica Alba in Princess Leia's metal bikini, and she's just freed me from that block of carbonite, and I'm blind and I start using my hands to...oops! Let's move on shall we?

Before I need to stop writing and go take a cold shower, a very cold shower, "Hoth" cold. Anyway, he asked if I could come up with some spine chilling tales of terror, Star Wars-style, to put all the CC.com fans, and Star Wars fans in general (after all, what hard-core SW fan doesn't check out the Cantina each and every week, am I right?) in the holiday spirit, or should I say "howl" iday. (Rim shot please!) So be sure to be here each and every week throughout October, starting next week with, "The Legend of Gungan Hollow" HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But more importantly than giving free advertisements to major online companies, this means I now, at long last, have a nice long bar, double-cornered bar for the patrons of my own personal Creature Cantina. This, of course, means that I must make a comic about aforementioned corner bar pieces...

Anakin awoke with a start in the middle of the night. His body was caked with sweat, his gasped for every refreshing breath of air. Glancing to his side, he saw Padme sleeping beside him; fortunately his late night tossing and turning didn't wake her. He moved to the edge of the bed and planted his feet on the floor, as he ran his fingers through his hair. He knew these dreams were coming more frequently, and becoming more and more vivid. They all involved the death of his wife. He knew he had to do something; he could not let these visions come to pass. He had to protect the love of his life and their unborn child at all costs. Talking with Master Yoda was no help; perhaps he should speak with Obi Wan? No, he shook his head, Kenobi was holding him back as it was. What help could he possibly be? Anakin knew he had surpassed his master in every way, but was being held back just the same. His time was coming, and coming soon. His reputation was growing with every victorious campaign in the Clone Wars. He was a born leader, why didn't the Jedi see it? Palpatine saw it. Yeah, that was it; he would go and talk to Palpatine.

Phew. With all of those bounty hunters creeping around this place, it makes it hard for a decent scoundrel to get a drink without being hauled off to some detention center.

Fortunately, nobody seems particularly interested in hauling in these two patrons.

Ellors Madak can pretty much bore anyone to death with his unending stories of space travel...although that isn't his featured ability. It would have been a good one though. But it isn't the one we gave him. Then there's Krelman...one of the most absurd aliens ever created for the Star Wars Universe...even by the standards of the Holiday Special from which he derived. You shouldn't want to put him in your deck, and we've made that point clear with an ability that is almost as annoying as his method of imbibing.

Cable Original Republic Commandos!
Posted by: Bill Cable 10.17.07 12:01am
It's been months and months since I've posted any new Cable Original art. There are a few reasons for this. First, there was Celebration IV, which took a monster chunk out of my free time. Then there was the PSWCS Summer Social. And then my work installed a new computer system, which has really cut into my drawing time. On top of that, my latest project is my most ambitious endeavor yet!

You see, this Cable original isn't one drawing. It's not a pair of drawings. It's not even three drawings! This Cable Original is comprised of FOUR drawings... the four Clone Troopers of Republic Commando! My patron wanted the four characters depicted in a single scene, similar to what I did on Mustafar and Geonosis. I wanted to come up with something unique and special for this one, and I decided to depict the aftermath of the Battle of Geonosis. I think it turned out really well, and my patron liked them a lot. Gotta love making the customer happy.

So here's my latest masterpieces... Boss, Sev, Fixer and Scorch:

It'll probably be a while before I get to my next Cable Original. I'm still dealing with pretty much everything I had to deal with before, and I also have three other major art projects I need to tackle before I can get to another Cable Original. Hopefully it'll be worth the wait again.

CCCG: Snitches

Only one card on deck today: the wily and mischievous Imperial snitch named Garindan. He can turn out to be your best friend, or your worst enemy...depending on whatever card is next in your opponent’s patrons deck.

So I've done this joke a couple of times now...but this time it has a creepy Halloween flair to it.

Plus, I couldn't help revisiting this topic given that I just picked up a General McQuarrie figure.

Does anybody else have a problem with this kitbash's head popping off all the time? It seems that his mullet doesn't quite clear the collar of his Hoth fatigues...

The Emperor stood in the bowels of his secret lair on Coruscant, staring down upon his latest creation. It was an imposing figure, clad entirely in black, from the helmet that adorned his head and face, to the boots which covered his cybernetic feet. Once brought to life, this...thing would become his new apprentice, and help him rule over his newly created Empire. All he needed was one component to make him complete.

I'd actually planned two more strips in my "Flame Gem" arc, but this whole work move thing threw me off this week. I had to throw together something quick, and I ended up going with something more topical. We wish you a Merry Halloween in this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Easter Eggs for your Halloween basket!

Not to mix holiday metaphors, but up-and-coming action-figure movie director GeoMFilms has alerted me to an awesome Order 95 shout-out in his epic-length fanfilm extravaganza: Generations. And what better way to get a Cantina contributor to plug your work than to advertise a project associated with CC.com within said work?

Generations is a whopping hour-and-a-half of professional quality special-effects laden over a live-action, 3.75" drama. The plot features a cross-over between the heroes and villains of the Prequel and Original Trilogies, and the whole thing looks really, really good. It also features a lot of POTF2 figures getting plastered, hence the O95 allusion.

To check out the complete library of Order 95 comics posted by artists all over the place, check out the Creature Cantina Order 95 HQ page. Obviously, we're still accepting submissions to O95...and stay tuned for an exciting O95 contest to be announced soon!

A couple of weeks ago the good people of KSWCC held their annual Fall Festival. I guess that's kinda like the summer socials other clubs have, except held when everything's dying. Those guys asked for a donation for their prize table, and being the nice guy I am I sent some art. The winner: Michael Thomas!

Another epic story to begin Next Week!
Posted by: Darth Danno 10.31.07 12:01am
As I promised awhile back, I would have another ongoing story premiering right here at CC.com. (and where else would I want to showcase something of this magnitude? Nowhere else!) Next week...it begins. Now if you remember, I said a popular icon would be coming to the Star Wars galaxy, and not ending where the whole thing was just some lame dream. This is going to be the real deal! Now before I tell you who the mystery guest is, I'll give you some hints of what SW characters you'll re-meet: Darth Maul, Jango Fett, Aurra Sing, and Jabba the Hutt to name a few. This story will be ongoing until the end of May, for reasons that will make sense by the time you read the end of this paragraph, so phone your friends, notify your neighbors, and relay this to the relatives. Be sure to be here next week and every week for, (drum roll, please!)...

Indiana Jones and the Sith Stone

Until next week...

Costume Party
Posted by: Tresob Yr 10.31.07 12:01am
I hate costume parties. I don't have a problem dressing like a pirate or zombie or a Japanese school girl, or even talking to complete strangers at a party while so attired. My real concern is that I'll get in a horrible car accident in costume while en route to the party and the last image anyone will ever have of me will be in some freakish disguise or in make-up. Not the end I'd wish for, lad. Now, if I could afford some kind of 501st get-up, I might be a little more amenable to the idea...If my number comes up, I might as well go out in style.

Changes afoot at CC.com
Posted by: Bill Cable 10.31.07 12:01am
I received some unexpected news on Sunday. I'm moving to a different department in my company. This was completely out of the blue. And I'm not yet certain how this is going to influence my schedule. So don't be entirely surprised if the day I update changes or something like that. You've been warned!
