A Clone of my own Posted by: Tresob Yr 01.31.07 12:01am Ah, clones. As something of a recovering clonophile myself, I keep wondering how far Hasbro can really take these variants. For a while there, I needed every commander. And then I found myself needing at least two clones to flank the commander. Now, suddenly, I'm supposed to need an airborne trooper and an AT-RT driver in the correct paint scheme for each clone regiment. What's next? But something tells me that I'm not the only one facing clone-collecting anxiety...

Striking while the iron is hot! Posted by: Bill Cable 02.07.07 12:01am Last week's comic strip got rave reviews. I had random people E-mailing me to compliment. PSWCS reactions were very positive. It even brought Rensi out of hiding, and he sent me half a dozen ideas for future strips! I'd like to continue with the theme, but some times an event comes along that must be addressed immediately. This past week saw such an event. So instead of something brilliant, you'll get something timely in this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

CHAPTER VIII: THE PRODIGAL RETURNS (Part II)

THE STUFF YOU NEED TO OWN!!! Posted by: Bill Cable 02.07.07 12:01am It's that time again... time to pimp some auctions! Last month I packed up my collection and put it in storage... the daughters needed a new play room. It was a lot of work. But it was good, because in the process I came across some things that I wanted to sell but forgot about. Money money!! I like getting money. It also give me the opportunity to tell some wonderful, interesting stories about this great stuff.
I'll start with the one non-SW item I'm selling. It's a comic book I purchased around 1991, during the height of the Comic Book Boom. Amazing Spider-Man #129 - the first appearance of the Punisher. Back in the day I had first editions of every single Punisher appearance published by Marvel Comics. To this day I collect them. So it was a joy to take my Christmas money to the Pittsburgh ComiCon and blow it all on a minty copy of his first appearance. Then comics went down the tubes, and all that money I spent I thought was lost. Then I learned about CGC grading! It turns out high-grade comics still pull in some cash. Believe it or not. When I got this one back, I was pretty disappointed. The comic, I thought, was much MUCH nicer than a 6.5. Even the shop who sent it in for me thought it was under graded. But what can you do. At least at a 6.5 I'll get most of what I paid 16 years ago...
Wow... that was a long story. Luckily these next three go together... Dragon*Con 2006. Fantastic event. I did a write-up about it last September. Anyways, the only real Vintage stuff we came across was a guy with like 30 POTF B-Wing pilots. Me and 3 other guys went in a bought all of them, along with a few other desirables he had. It was a fun deal, and a treat to watch Dustin (007china) haggle with the guy for seven straight hours. I'm finally getting around to selling them. We got them for a good price, and they're REALLY nice, so I'm hoping it was a wise investment. Make me look the genius and bid on POTF B-Wing Pilot MOMC UP #1, POTF B-Wing Pilot MOMC UP #2, and ROTJ77 Biker Scout MOC.
You ever do something, then feel bad about it later? Nah, I'm sure you've never done that. Well, I did. Last year I bought a couple CB, UP ROTJ figures off a guy thinking they were AFA-able. And as you know, AFA80+ ROTJ CB UPs can go for hundreds of dollars. I got them, and I didn't think they were nearly as nice as they looked in the photos. So I asked for a refund. The refund was refused. So I crucified the guy in the RS forums. After a 2-day brawl, and a lot of feedback from other collectors, we came to a mutually agreed-upon solution. I sold one of the figures to a guy at my cost, but couldn't find a taker on this ROTJ77 Squidhead MOC CB UP. So up on eBay it goes in the hopes I don't lose my shirt. It was a hell of a fight over just a few dozen dollars... but when I'm in a scrapping mood I scrap like nobody's business.
Now this next auction... I just relisted for the publicity. This was such a big hit with my last batch, I figured for $.75 I'd throw it up again. You know you want a Vintage 4" scale Star Wars 'personal massager'
And finally, the good stuff! By that I mean the AFA-graded, high cash stuff. The stories with these... well... the Palitoy I purchased thinking it was a ROTJ45, not a ROTJ65. I already had a 65, but I really want a 45. When it came I was upset. But noticing it was really, really minty, I figured I'd make my money back and then some by getting it graded and putting it up on eBay. So now you can own my AFA 90 Palitoy ROTJ65 C-3PO. And this Takara C-3PO... I found it on eBay not listed as a Takara. It was actually loose but it came with a Takara cardback. The cardback was trashed, and the bubble wasn't much better. But the figure was really, really nice. I took the chance and it came up roses. I've had this figure for a couple years, but it wasn't until I noticed I'd never seen a graded example that I decided to send it in and try my luck. It came back an 85... I was expecting a 90. But an 85 will still get some offers. I hope. It's been 3 days with a handful of watchers, but no offers. I just want some offers, people! So check it out... Loose AFA85 Takara sculpt variant C-3PO.

Mara Jaded Posted by: Tresob Yr 02.07.07 12:01am No expanded universe figure has generated such a rabid cult of fans like Mara Jade has. Indeed, Mara Jade fans have been so eager for Hasbro to release another figure of her, that they have gone so far as to semi-officially designate figures from other toylines as Mara Jades.
If you don't believe me, look at the consistent use of a particular head used in Mara Jade customs

At long last - New Cable Art!!! Posted by: Bill Cable 02.07.07 12:01am I've been busy like crazy, with no end in sight. So it's been tough to squeeze in any drawing time. But squeeze I did, and you'll be amazed by what came out...
That didn't sound right at all...
Like I said when I posted the last drawing, I came up with some really good concepts for three drawings at once when I was roughing out Gonk. Well, this drawing is one of those amazing concepts! I'm thrilled with how this one turned out, and the patron was equally impressed. And I think you'll be amazed, too! Check out the "Cable Original" Boushh:

Padme's Valentine's date Posted by: Tresob Yr 02.14.07 12:01am Chick figs. You know you want them. You just have to find a way to convince your girlfriend that you aren't a pervert for buying them.
And, let me tell you, acquiring the lead actress for this comic was a hard sell this weekend.
I even tried pitching that I needed to buy the figure because it had a Yoda Hologram and that was the only hologram I didn't have (fortunately for my argument not a single one of the umpteen million Combat Engineer Clones had a Yoda on the back).
Needless to say, any chance of acquiring those new Force Unleashed figures will have to rely on generous donations from readers.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the following comic, especially since it came within 3.75 inches of ruining my love life...

My eBay nightmare Posted by: Bill Cable 02.14.07 12:01am So last week I ran some eBay auctions. And they did really well (except for one stupid Squidhead...). One of the more popular items was my loose Takara C-3PO. There was one bidder in particular who was extremely interested. And he asked me to sell it to him. EVERY SINGLE DAY. It was so ridiculous that I figured I'd share it with you guys.
On 2/7 I received the first, rather innocuous message:
Click Here to read all about my eBay nightmare!

Milk it... Posted by: Bill Cable 02.21.07 12:01am Why tell a good joke once, when you can reuse it over and over again? Let the reruns roll in this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

It's pronounced "Kay-duss"... Posted by: Bill Cable 02.21.07 12:01am ... and it means "a battle of darkness." That's the origin of the mantle Darth Caedus, currently one of the finalists in the Darth Who contest running on StarWars.com to name Jacen Solo's alter-ego as he turns to the Dark Side. And it turns out that entry was submitted by a member of PSWCS! So click over and vote for Caedus, and support a fellow collector's shot at fame and glory!

Repaint Posted by: Tresob Yr 02.21.07 12:01am I know a lot of collectors are annoyed that the Elite Clone Trooper isn't quite exactly movie-accurate. Maybe Hasbro intentionally released this less-than-CGI-perfect model because it anticipates releasing a more accurate version down the line and wanted to hit up all of us clonoholics early in the year. But, when you think about how inaccurate figure sculpts have been in the past, this one hardly seems like something over which to gripe.
And in the worst case scenario, you have another Biker Scout...and we all know that if there is one figure Hasbro can always get us to buy other than Boba Fett, it's a Biker Scout. That being said, I'm not sure how effective that camouflage pattern they've painted on him really is...

Danish people LOVE ME! Posted by: Bill Cable 02.21.07 12:01am It turns out that as Hasselhoff is to Germans, so I am to Danes! No joke! Danes love Bill Cable! Want the proof? Check out this fawning "Cable Original" appreciation thread:
http://forum.skywalker.dk/index.php?topic=5532.0
At least I assume it's a fawning appreciation thread. I can't read whatever language that is. But I have it on good authority from one Henrik Wulff Rasmussen (could there be a more Danish name?) in the RS forums that it's all praise. So go over and check it out... read all the funny letter combinations... it's fun!!

A sensitive subject Posted by: Bill Cable 02.28.07 12:01am You know, I should really be preparing for the TWENTY FIVE Star Wars collectors who will be invading my home this Saturday instead of putzing around on another comic... but when have I ever done what I was supposed to do? Enjoy this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

CreatureCantina gets the scoop on upcoming Star Wars TV show! Posted by: Tresob Yr 02.28.07 12:01am Because its reporters will leave no stone unturned, no trash unpicked, and no cleaning service immigrant worker unsolicited, Creature Cantina is able to bring its readers exclusive information on one of the upcoming Star Wars television programs. Indeed, we even have documentary proof in the form of a promotional poster that (according to sources that choose to remain anonymous) allegedly came from within the Lucasfilm marketing department. Feast your eyes on the future, readers:
From what our nameless sources can tell us, we have determined that the Starch Wars television program will mark a tremendous evolution in broadcasting. It will air weekly on the CartoonNetwork in high-definition Wonkavision. Each episode runs for a full one-hour, without any commercials. We are still unable to determine who is sponsoring this commercial-free program, featuring characters from the popular and tasty M&M's(TM) Candy MPire(TM) line battling none other than collectable and kid-favorite Playskool's(TM) Darth Tater(TM) aboard his sugar-tablet dispensing PEZ(R) Death Star(TM).
This just in: Plans to air the pilot episode in Wonkavision were abandoned when the FCC and the DHS declared that the chocolatier's broadcasting system to be a threat to national security.

O95: Master Grievous steps back into the ring Posted by: Tresob Yr 02.28.07 12:01am You'd think by now everyone would have run out of POTF2 figures to pick on in their Order 95 comics...but not so!
Master Grievous (Darth class Order 95 member) launches a new wave of Order 95 comics in his "Figure" series: The POTF2 Strike Back.

Housecleaning! Posted by: Bill Cable 02.28.07 12:01am If you've ever checked out the "Cable Original" gallery, you've seen that I have a "Requested" list of characters that people have shown interest in, but haven't yet paid a deposit on. The deal is that I'll E-mail whoever requested any character first if somebody else says they want to pay the deposit. Well... the list was in ill-repair. There were Requests on there from 2002! So last week I sent out a message to all the people who'd requested characters and asked them to reply if they were still interested. Only one person replied!
So now there's a lot of cool open characters if anybody's interested. Shaak-Ti. ARC Trooper. Clone Pilot. Ree Yees. Even Chef Gormaanda!!
So check out the shorter list! Then look for someone not on that list, and send me some money!

We know what you want... OLD news!! Posted by: Bill Cable 03.07.07 12:01am I've been lazy on so many fronts this year, it's little wonder I haven't updated the News Archive page in a long time. Well, we know how much you love to go back and relive the comedic brilliance of CC.com, so I got off my butt and... well, actually I performed this task entirely while seated on my butt.. I got ON my butt and put up some archive pages. I also did something people have been asking for for a while... I created an archive page of past CC.com headlines. Every one of them. So check it out!

Don't be a Smart Ash Posted by: Tresob Yr 03.07.07 12:01am His coming was foretold by prophecy. His name begins with A. He's got a robot hand, and he's full of attitude.
No, he's not Anakin Skywalker...he's Ash from the Evil Dead series, and his 3.75" likeness makes a cameo appearance in this week's comic! (Don't worry, folks, it's still Star Wars related.)

What an ASSHOLE!! Posted by: Bill Cable 03.07.07 12:01am Hopefully this auction will be gone before you even have the chance to view it...
Some jerk on eBay is selling printer-ready images of MY Droids Bossk artwork for $1 a pop!!
STAR WARS CUSTOM BOBA FETT ARE BOSK DROIDS CARDBACK
Note the impressive mastery of the English language...
Now, it's one thing to steal my art for your own customs. Have fun. Be creative. It's quite another to turn around and try to make a profit off of it. And it's even a third thing to use a poorly-cropped, half-assed version of my cardback art to try to make a profit! I mean, this print out is going to look like ass... it's a blown-up version of a 72dpi, low-rez image. If you're going to steal from me, at least do it in a way that makes me look good!!
I sent dude a message demanding he remove the auction. We'll see how that goes. Like I said, you might not even get the chance to see the outrage. But if you do, be sure to send him some compelling questions...

Hasbro Q&A answers to CreatureCantina!! Posted by: Bill Cable 03.07.07 12:01am I say to thee HOLY CRAP! For several months I've been receiving messages from a guy affiliated with the Hasbro Q&A program asking for questions. I honestly don't even know how is scrubs at CreatureCantina.com got on the list. I figured it was some oversight. A few weeks ago, on a lark, I told my staff "What the hell, let's send in some questions!" So we wrote some up. Beedo wrote most of them, if memory serves. But the rest of the staff pitched in as well. I put together the best, and I think we sent in six or so. And I expected never to hear from Hasbro again... or at most maybe getting a injunction against us forbidding us from ever contacting representatives from Hasbro for the rest of our natural lives. But much to our surprise, Hasbro Answered!
So I guess you'll want to see our Qs and their As. God's honest truth, these are authentic! And the answers are from Hasbro. No kidding!! So all you web sites out there that put together Q&A "round-ups" make sure to include our contributions, else your archive is incomplete!
Hasbro Q&A with CreatureCantina.com, volume 25 (apparently)

CHAPTER XII: SUSPICION GROWS

Action figure oddities Posted by: Tresob Yr 03.14.07 12:01am This week, I'm doing something a little different with my comic here at the Cantina. A few weeks ago I went on a little Mardis Gras splurge at my local store with the big red dot, but I've been troubled with certain aspects of some of the acquisitions I made. It's not that I'm complaining about quality control or anything. I've tried painting a custom figure at a meeting of the DCSWCC, and I'm not going to fault the poor Chinese factory workers for a lazy eye on an action figure here or there. Still...some of the features on these recent releases deserved to be highlighted...

Cable Original Luke X-Wing Posted by: Bill Cable 03.14.07 12:01am Another month, another Cable Original. As the grains of sand through the hourglass...
You know, after doing a hundred and twenty of these introductions, it's tough to come up with anything unique and interesting. This drawing does have a few stories which could be told, I guess. I was having trouble coming up with a pose for this one, so I asked my patron if he had any suggestions. He said either Luke climbing the steps up into an X-Wing, or Luke standing there with his helmet. I already did the climbing thing with an A-Wing Pilot years ago, so I decided to do the standing thing.
I sketched it out, then I went to my Visual Dictionary for some costume references. What do I find, but Luke... standing in the exact same pose! I don't know if it was a coincidence, or if I subconsciously remembered the photo and copied it. I felt kind of bad. But what's done is done, and what's sketched is sketched, so I saw it through to the end.
And the guy was very happy with it, so all's well that ends well.
The other story is that the drawing went to a guy in Australia! I'm world wide yet again! Boo-yeah!!
I hope that was mildly interesting. To reward you for getting through it, here's the art!

Question Hasbro: YOUR TURN! Posted by: Bill Cable 03.21.07 12:01am A couple weeks ago we sent some questions to Hasbro. Then Hasbro answered! And after that, RebelScum put it in their latest round-up. So it's all good!
Last time we submitted questions from our staff. But we don't want to hog all the fun. So now you can send in your questions that we'll forward to Hasbro.
Remember - these questions are coming from CreatureCantina.com. So they gotta fit the CreatureCantina.com spirit! Hasbro knows who we are, and has indicated that they're going to play along, so don't hold back!
The next deadline for questions is this Friday. So I'll need your questions by 10am EDT Friday morning. Send your questions to hasbro@creaturecantina.com.

Clone Armor Design 101 Posted by: Tresob Yr 03.21.07 12:01am My predilection for clones is well-known. It's a guilty pleasure. Don't get me wrong, I don't have to have every single solitary paint scheme or variant. I usually restrain myself to buying only one or two of each design, unless, of course, we're talking about battle packs. Anyway, I do own a heckuvalot of clones by now. But not all of them are quite as cool looking as others. For instance, I've passed on the "I have a dot on my chest" clones. I've also passed on the "Two lines on my helmet makes me different" style. It does make one wonder, though. If some of these really lame clone designs are the ones that made it through the approval process, what kind of designs were rejected....

Cable Original Sexy Sith Babe Posted by: Bill Cable 03.21.07 12:01am Nothing's more fun than drawing hot women. It makes me wish there were more than four in the Saga.
Thank God for comic books! I usually don't read Star Wars comics... the vast majority are dreck. It's the writing... just not up to snuff with what I usually read. But I was motivated by the pre-release hype to pick up the new Legacy books. And so far it's been mostly good. It's a good thing I read them, because it helped a lot with my latest art... the sexy Twi'lek Sith chick Darth Talon. She's a Twi'lek in a strapless halter top and bikini bottom... does it get any better?
I think not. The only downside was all those tats all over her. They presented a unique challenge. The obscured some of the details I would have liked to add. And they prevented me completely from doing any body shading. But challenges are fun, and I'm really happy with the outcome. And so was the new owner, our own Darth Danno!

RAGE!!!! Posted by: Bill Cable 03.28.07 12:01am Do you think there's any chance Greedo will yet again piss somebody off? I don't know... I guess you'll have to read this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip

Purists Posted by: Tresob Yr 03.28.07 12:01am Before Hasbro released the official figure, I was perfectly content with designating my lone ROTS Tactical Ops trooper as Commander Appo. It worked well enough. In the movie, Appo looked just like any other 501st trooper. And then Hasbro had to put that darned pauldron on the Saga Appo, just to make him different. Of course, if I wanted to, I could just remove the pauldron and make him movie accurate...but why should I buy a figure with a pauldron just to take the pauldron off? (Not that I actually bought this figure for myself. Thanks Isabel!)

A failed experiment Posted by: Bill Cable 04.04.07 12:01am I've been doing this comic strip for six long years. One of the reasons I do it is because I love to draw, and want to practice drawing to improve my craft. In order to improve, "real" artists draw for hours every day. I don't have time for that, so The Cantina is my small way of making that effort.
And in every way it's failing. It's supposed to lead to improvement. But... look back at my comics from three or four years ago... they look exactly the same!! My comic art, if anything, has gotten worse over time! The main reason is that I don't have as much time to dedicate to it, so I'm just rushing through it every single week. That's not a good environment for developing and enhancing my skills.
So I've been thinking of ways to give my strip art a kick in the pants that don't force me to spend a lot more time on it. And I came up with a couple ideas. The first idea I tried was to eliminate the inks. When I pencil my strips, they always look to me to be a whole lot more dynamic than after I ink them. So why not scan the pencils, color them, and use that? Sounds like a great idea, right?
No... it was a bad, bad idea. Not only did it end up looking like ass, it took about ten times longer to color! It was so bad I was intending to ink it and rescan it... but then all the computers blew up at work last night and I didn't get the chance. So I have no choice but to post the failure. Maybe next week's experiment will go better. Until then, I hope you don't suffer to much through this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip
