CHAPTER III: THE PLOT THICKENS (Part I)

Toys R Us wins round two... Posted by: Bill Cable 11.22.06 12:01am In January of 1999, sniveling, sleazy lawyers from Toys R Us sent a cease & desist order demanding that The Star Wars Collectors Archive hosted at ToysRGus.com be shut down. They claimed it to be a violation of their copyright. The public outcry was thunderous, reaching all corners of the Internet, including CNet.com. Seeing a public relations disaster, and realizing they had no legal footing to persecute the non-for-profit venture, Toys R Us relented. And all was right in the world.
In November 2006 the sniveling, sleazy lawyers returned! Probably a new set of them, intent on digging up anything to earn some cash... And Gus received another C&D order. This time Gus doesn't have the energy to fight. So ToysRGus.com has changed to TheSWCA.com!
It's the end of an era. The changing of a guard. And while the new domain name is sort of appropriate, it's missing something.
So there you have it. The lesson here is that lawyers win... eventually. You can't fight big business. And the world sucks.

I don't know... is it funny? Posted by: Bill Cable 11.29.06 12:01am I'm really on the fence about this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip...

You the Man Posted by: Tresob Yr 11.29.06 12:01am Sometimes I wish that the animated Clone Wars series had been Episode One, Revenge of the Sith had been Episode Two, and Episode Three was still to be made. I suppose it has something to do with the way that the Jedi in the animated Clone Wars do the kinds of things that I had always imagined the Jedi doing, like creatively using their force powers to wipe out wave after wave of hostile aggressors...whereas the Jedi in the actual movie are really only good at creatively dying.

Yakkin' it up with Order 95 Posted by: Tresob Yr 11.29.06 12:01am Niktom's very popular "Yak's Pub" over at the Yakface.com forums has just been struck with Order 95 fever! See the fun start here. Evidently, the Pub will be running Order 95 gags all week...so drop in and drop a line! Tell them Tresob sent ya.

Beedo Spams the Spammers! Posted by: Beedo Sookcool 11.29.06 12:01am Last week Beedo actually received an E-mail through his CreatureCantina.com E-mail address. It was SPAM! Some firm offering their voice-over services. Being the helpful soul he is, Beedo decided to reply. It's not what you'd expect.
Greetings.
I received an e-mail message from you through one of the websites I work with. Rather than putting it through the Spam Filter, I thought that as a voice-over provider, I would ask if you'd like any additional VO staff . . . ? I've done a couple of ads and some TV work back when I lived in Ohio, but unfortunately, I do not have copies of those projects.
However, here are some online cartoons for which I provided all the voices:
Thank you for your time.

O95: Lord Yodascorch, Rise! Posted by: Tresob Yr 12.06.06 12:01am It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Order 95 Inner Sanctum has voted to elevate our most prolific contributor, Yodascorch, to the title of DARTH!
According to the rules of Order 95, a Darth is a contributor who has produced at least one full-length, 24 page photo-comic or a 100 scene photo-novel. While Yodascorch technically falls just shy of this count in terms of actual pages (he has contributed 18 discrete units to his story arc), his last three contributions make up a stop-motion animation grand finale incorporating over 850 images! Besides for inspiring photonovelists to produce, Yodascorch has, at the very least, given us all someone to point to when our girlfriends think we are spending too much time with our toys.
And so, we salute you, Darth Yodascorch! May your displays shelves always be level and your plastic never yellow. Now go watch his grand finale, spliced into one video here.
And in other Order 95 news...
Niktom has completed his week of Order 95 comics over in the Yakface.com forums, here. Thanks for all the coverage, Niktom!
And an up-and-coming photo novel artist in the RS forums going by the handle of Master Grievous has just given us a preview shot here.
Learn from Darth Yodascorch, Master Grievous!
Be sure to keep an eye on the Order 95 HQ page! And keep e-mailing me links to your Order 95 comics!

CHAPTER IV: THE LEGEND OF THE MASTER

The Cantina remixed! Posted by: Bill Cable 12.06.06 12:01am A few days ago I received an E-mail from a high school kid named Justin Brigham asking for permission to use one of my comic strips in his school newspaper. "The Cantina"... published in an actual newspaper??? I was all over it.
But there was a catch. He was going to use my art, and some of my words, but he was also going to add his own words. He called it a "Comic Dub." So not the glory I was hoping for, but at least I can take comfort in the fact that I inspired the kid. So I gave him permission.
Here's the original comic: The Cantina 11-29-06
Here's the original dub:
Of course joking about booze and meds in a high school newspaper is generally frowned upon, so Justin was asked to edit the final frame to something... lamer:
That's what happens when you're not your own publisher. I had just about the same thing happen when I was working for my high school newspaper. And I had that happen every other week at my college newspaper. Ahhhh... freedom is bliss. Thanks Justin for adding your creativity to CC.com!

The last of the batch! Posted by: Bill Cable 12.06.06 12:01am After many months we're down to the very last figure from that Vintage lot we purchased. It's been a hell of a lot of work for what we'd hoped would have been a lot more profit. But at least we're in the black, which is a good place to be.
The last figure we have to sell is actually one we already sold. The high bidder failed to pay. And of course it's the figure that ended with the highest closing bid that we end up getting a flaky bidder on. Can't be the $70 figure... nah... it's gotta be the $150 figure that falls through!
Hopefully this new auction will end just as high. I'm not holding my breath, but I'm hoping. So go ahead and bid $149.99 on it for me...

Toy Wars 100 Posted by: Tresob Yr 12.06.06 12:01am Hey, remember when I used to call my comic "Toy Wars?"
Yeah, that didn't last very long.
But it was over two years ago...in a time before the saga was complete, and before the massive population explosion of action figures in my abode.
Anyway, I've done some calculations, and it would appear that this is pretty much my 100th comic. And that's not even including all the other digital amusements that Bill Cable has generously allowed me to display on his site.
So, to commemorate this momentous occasion, I decided to go back to where it all started...

2006 Carida Toy Drive - meet the Stormies! Posted by: Bill Cable 12.06.06 12:01am Hello Pennsylvanians! You probably know about this already, but PSWCS is collecting toys again this year for Garrison Carida. This is like out fourth year doing this! It's always nice to do something for the kids.
And you can participate! There's two events coming up. THIS SATURDAY there will be approximately TWENTY troopers at Toy Cave in Carlisle, PA. Next Saturday there will be another nice compliment of troopers at Essential Comics in Exeter, PA. You can read the full details of the toy drive right here and see the schedules here.
When was the last time you saw twenty guys dressed up as Stormtroopers? Unless you're at Celebration 3, that's just an insane number. To see that in downtown Carlisle, PA... well... they'll be stopping traffic with all the gawkers. So don't miss out!
Oh yeah... there will be lemonade and cookies!!

Cable Original weak-minded FOOL!! Posted by: Bill Cable 12.06.06 12:01am After weeks and weeks under the weather, I'm finally feeling well enough to hold a pen in my hands and get some work done. It's a pity I got sick... I was almost a shoe-in to beat my most productive year of art. In 2003 I drew twenty Cable Originals. I was at seventeen just a week into November when I got hammered by the worst cold of my life. Now it looks like AT BEST I'll only match 2003, but most likely I'll only get one more done before New Years. So close and yet so far...
But the good news is that I'm almost through my backlog! I only have another six drawings before I'm all caught up. And you know what that means... time for YOU GUYS to order more art!! Come on... it's the best $65 you'll spend. You can either get almost 9 modern Star Wars action figures that'll just be cluttering up some massive plastic bin two weeks after you yank them off the shelves, or you could get a fabulous, one-of-a-kind drawing that'll grace your wall and be a great conversation piece for years. It's an easy choice.
But why beg, when I can just dazzle you with the quality of my product. Check out Bib Fortuna!

Failed deception Posted by: Bill Cable 12.13.06 12:01am Jeff from Garrison Carida sent in yet another comic strip idea. He has good concepts... but sometimes he's lacking in the punchlines. He's like "Wouldn't it be funny if..." and give a decent set-up. But then does nothing with it. So I ended up having to work one out myself. Pain in my ass... yep, that's this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

The naughty side of the Force Posted by: Tresob Yr 12.13.06 12:01am Sure, it's easy to get cynical this time of year. There's plenty of commercialization, materialism, and gluttony. Worse yet, pretty much all the toy aisles have been gutted by Philistine parents who don't know they are snatching away hard-to-find-figures from needy collectors just so that their little Bobby can have one of those fancy Star Wars figures to open, even though Bobby doesn't have a digital camera to take pictures of his figures for use in his weekly photocomic...
But all that set aside, who can resist the true power of the holidays?

Order 95: A quick study Posted by: Tresob Yr 12.13.06 12:01am Last time we checked in on ol' Master Grievous on the Rebelscum forums, he gave us a sneak peek single panel teaser for his installment of Order 95. Well, he's been a busy little artist, as he just posted a whopper of a photonovel: over 50 images long! That makes him an instant commander!
Check out the action here.
I've also been churning a steady output as part of the Order 95: My Enemy's Enemy story arc, here. You can also link to all ten pages via the Order 95 HQ.
And, as always, if you ever get a hankering to contribute your own comic to Order 95, e-mail tresob.yr@gmail.com.

They're finally done!! Posted by: Bill Cable 12.13.06 12:01am You know... if I had any idea how stupid hard it was to find even *** white-limbed Vintage Stormtroopers when I began this project, I would have done IG-88 instead. I mean seriously... I have a bag of about 30 Stormtroopers I got off various auctions that simply didn't make the cut. I was looking for the cleanest, whitest ones I could find. And a lot of auction photos looked good, and the descriptions said the troopers were white, but when I get them... yellow splotches, purple splotches, black smudges. And these were the ones listed as mint.
Then there were others that were just damaged. Scratches. Cracks. Hell, one of them had a big chunk of its crotch gouged out. It wasn't pretty.
I started putting together these customs back in June. Six months later I finally picked up the last two I needed from James Simkins at the Pittsburgh Toy Show a couple weekends ago. He had about 20 pretty nice ones, but even most of those were messed up in some way. It was great to look through them in person so I could pick out two that'd meet my high standards. And last weekend I assembled my last two customs. Woohoo!
For this set, I did a run of 15 instead of 10. I wanted to make the extras so there'd be enough for my buddies from Garrison Carida to pick a few up. Of the 15, there are only 6 still available. And when they're gone, they're gone. I had at least two guys contact me that they wanted one but then didn't contact me again after I asked for the money, so maybe they'll see this and get back in touch. My point is... this is a scarce commodity! So you should jump on it now before they're all gone. It'd make the perfect Christmas present for the Stormtrooper focus collector or Droids fan on your list! And at only $70 you won't find a better custom at a nicer price. The art is all original by yours truly... it's a genuinely unique piece. Well... one of fifteen unique.
E-mail me if you want one!!
Here's a photo of the eight I had before the Carida toy drive this past weekend (which was very successful, BTW). Now I'm down to six. Get one before I'm down to zero. You won't regret it!

The drive continues! Posted by: Bill Cable 12.20.06 12:01am The PSWCS Toy Drive for Garrison Carida was spectacularly successful, collecting (by rough count) 637 Star Wars toys for hospitalized children. But it's never too late to support this great cause. If you'd like to donate some toys, contact me. And if you'd like to see Carida's continuing efforts, check out this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Order 95: Tarantino style Posted by: Tresob Yr 12.20.06 12:01am A photo-novelist going by the name of Jordo hit the Order 95 scene this week on Archival Star Wars. Jordo approaches the Order from the gritty, seedy underbelly of the Empire. Keep an eye for more in the future...
And if you are looking for another dose of Order 95 mayhem, My Enemy's Enemy (an ongoing O95 comic by yours truly) is now up to page 11...
Keep up with the latest on the Order 95 HQ.

CHAPTER VI: DEBACLE IN THE DOCKING BAY (Part I)

Cable Original TIE Pilot!!! Posted by: Bill Cable 12.20.06 12:01am I can't do it. I can't possibly deliver 20 drawings in 2006, matching my highest yearly output of Cable Original drawings. I'm going to stall at 19. Why? Well... I just realized the owner of the potential #20 lives in the UK. So even though I'm only about an hour away from finishing my #20, there's no way I could get it to England before next week's update. (Well, I could ship it 2-day global, but I'd end up spending more on shipping than I charged for the art, so that ain't happening).
Oh well... it was a good effort. But let's focus on more positive things... like my nineteenth Cable Original of 2006! This art not only amazed its owner, it actually helped ease her pain. You see, last week my patron was hurt in an auto accident... rear-ended by some goofball who wasn't paying attention. So she's laid up in bed... no serious injuries but she's dealing with some pain. Receiving this drawing brought her joy. She loves it. Or maybe it's just that she's hopped up on Percocets. Still, it was nice to be part of her positive recovery. And now you can enjoy my latest Cable Original: TIE Fighter Pilot!

Holiday Adventure Set Posted by: Tresob Yr 12.20.06 12:01am Realizing that collectors seem to be hooked on Clone-filled Battlepacks, Hasbro decided to release not just one holiday figure this year but a holiday-themed four pack.

Bill Cable: Hallmark employee! Posted by: Bill Cable 12.20.06 12:01am Who would have thought, after all these controversial years, that I'd end up designing greeting cards? Certainly not me! But it happened roughly six weeks ago, when Star Wars Super Collector's Wish Book author Todd Carlton came to me with an idea and a truck full of money. He told me that he'd previously designed his own Christmas cards by photographing toys, but this year he wanted something a little nicer... a "Cable Original" Christmas card!
I'm not one to turn down the prospect of cash AND the widespread dissemination of my artwork, but there were some challenges. Well... one challenge, really. He needed the complete art in a month. But if I wanted the chance to get the art featured in the upcoming 4th edition of his book, I needed to get it to him in 11 days. Now, were it a simple black & white drawing that'd be a breeze. But for this he needed a full-color, high-rez, professional-grade final product. We're talking something on the level of my custom-carded Droids figures (which are still available for sale... best $70 you'll ever spend). I usually spend months coloring and shading those. For this card, I'd have just about 8 nights.
My greed and lust for fame won out over my need for sleep and to be productive at work. So I hunkered down and started drawing. Thankfully, Todd had a really good idea to work from, so the drawing pretty much designed itself. I just had to pour every spare moment into inking and coloring it. It was intense work, but it was very fruitful. Todd was thrilled by each new update I sent him. And the final product met my very high standards.
I received my card from Todd last week, and the finished product looks even better than the print-outs I made. I think it's the high-gloss finish. I asked if I could share it, and Todd was happy to oblige. So... since 'tis the season, I'm proud to wish everyone happy holidays with my very own Christmas card art!
Try real hard not to get "Christmas Tauntauns" stuck in your head...

What a revolting development! Posted by: Bill Cable 12.27.06 12:01am Wanna know the worst way to wrap up your Christmas holiday? I have a top candidate - stomach virus! Me and both my daughters started showing symptoms Monday night. My wife was the only one not stricken, so she's had the lovely task of repeatedly washing bedsheets and changing trash can liners. I was running to the bathroom just about every 10 minutes overnight, so I didn't get a wink of sleep until Tuesday afternoon. But all this didn't keep me from posting this week's updates! Am I dedicated or what? And even though I feel terrible, I don't think I feel as bad as Greedo in this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Better than coal... Posted by: Tresob Yr 12.27.06 12:01am Battle droids were getting massacred by Jedi left and right before General Grievous came along...so this season, the military hardware decided to thank their leader with a very special and hard-earned gift...

Star Wars Collecting: The Best and Worst of 2006 Posted by: Big_E 12.27.06 12:01am For the first time in seven years we were faced with the fact that there were no new theatrical movies coming for Star Wars. Hasbro and the other licensees, however, didn't miss a beat as they continued on with the huge success that was Revenge of the Sith. All the major manufacturers including Hasbro, Sideshow, Gentle Giant and Master Replicas brought out great items this year and we were all in line to buy them.

Aw crap... Posted by: Bill Cable 01.04.07 11:50pm Geez... I've been having so much fun in Florida I very nearly forgot to post this week's "The Cantina" comic strip!!!

Clearing up a few things Posted by: Bill Cable 01.10.07 12:01am I suppose I should begin by making it clear that my tirade in the top story was entirely tongue-in-cheek, written that way for the humorous effect. I don't really hate all our readers. The staff... sure... but not all the readers. So don't, like, stop reading or anything. To prove my love, I'll give you, free of charge, this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Stickshift Posted by: Tresob Yr 01.10.07 12:01am Has anyone else noticed that a certain facial feature on the Dud Bolt figure has been surgically removed from all of the official Hasbro images of him, including the image on the cardback itself? If only I had this figure back when I did the top five most inappropriate Star Wars figures of all time...

Yodascorch presents: Dark Cave Chronicles Posted by: Bill Cable 01.10.07 12:01am Frequent Order 95 contributor Yodascorch has embarked on a new photo novel project. Make sure you check out Dark Cave Chronicles

Cable interviews Sylvester Stallone!! Posted by: Bill Cable 01.10.07 12:01am OK, this is a couple weeks old, but it's too cool not to mention. Right before Rocky Balboa was released in theaters, Stallone was answering questions from readers on Ain't It Cool News. On a whim I sent in a question. To my surprise and delight, it was chosen as one of the ones he answered! My first celebrity interview... I'm so close to being a legitimate journalist!! If you want to read it, my question was #9...

Order 95: Always two there are... Posted by: Tresob Yr 01.10.07 12:01am Another Darth stalks the photocomics circles! Master Grievous makes the second contributor to reach top status over the holiday when he released a massively huge second and third part to his Order 95 epic. Yodascorch continues to upgrade the graphics of his previously released comics here. And my O95 comic, My Enemy's Enemy, is now up to page 14.
As always, the complete set of all O95 submissions can be read here. You might notice from this week's update that Order 95 is alive and well in the Rebelscum.com Forums, but it's still thriving elsewhere on the Internet as Jordo bumps up to Commander with his continuing (and not exactly family-friendly) Order 95 comics at Archival Star Wars. There's still time to join the Order 95 fun if you haven't already! E-mail me a link to your submissions!

Bill Cable presents: GONK! Posted by: Bill Cable 01.10.07 12:01am I'm back from vacation... unfortunately. Despite starting the vacation with a sever bout of the flu, the sore muscles and bruises I got from paintball, and the uncomfortable futon I slept on, I still had a fantastic time. I really didn't want to come back. Florida is amazing. Especially in January. You don't know how much you miss the extra two hours of daylight until you experience it.
But I'm not independently wealthy, so it's back to the grindstone.
As for last week, I apologize for forgetting to update the site Tuesday night. I got caught up in Final Fantasy 12 and completely forgot. But still... I gotta ask... WHAT THE HELL, PEOPLE??!! I'm two days late on my update for the first time in years and I don't get one freakin' E-mail??! Nobody wondered if maybe I was killed in a car crash or something? Or that Comenzo threatened another lawsuit? Not from any regular readers?? Not from anybody in PSWCS?? Not from anybody in Carida?? Not from anybody on MY FREAKIN' STAFF??!! I mean... they knew I was going to be on vacation, but I did tell them I'd be posting a small update anyway!
Way to make me feel appreciated, you bastards! Maybe we just don't have any regular readers. It's nice to know that CC.com could stop publishing new news and nobody would care enough to wonder why.
Even though it's obvious nobody out there actually gives a damn, here's my latest art. I hope you choke on it...

At the end of his rope Posted by: Bill Cable 01.17.07 12:01am Walrusman has taken all he can stands, he can't stands no more in this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Vote for The Cantina!!! Posted by: Bill Cable 01.17.07 12:01am Several weeks ago a reader alerted me to an entry he'd created for "The Cantina" comic strip on a site called ChoiceComics.com. On that page, you can "rate the comic" for quality and content, along with the web site that hosts it. I'm sure the more votes and higher ratings a comic gets, the more visits it'll get from that site. So why don't you go over and give CC.com some love?

Hologram Posted by: Tresob Yr 01.17.07 12:01am I can't say I've been a huge fan of the mini-holographic figures that were the pack-in of choice for last year's figures. They just didn't seem very "usable." It would have been one thing if all the holographic figures were nondescript poses, as if the characters were really speaking over a holographic projector. Instead, they all look like they were caught on candid camera, or Unleashed prototype rejects. Take, for instance, the holographic Darth Sidious. Did we ever see Darth Sidious waving around a lightsaber over his head in any holographic transmissions? And what exactly would the Emperor have to say over a subspace communication that would require such a threatening posture? Find out in this week's comic...

Circa 1984... Posted by: Bill Cable 01.24.07 12:01am Star Wars celebrates its 30-year anniversary this year. We honor that occasion with a gag that's nearly as old in this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

T-Rex v/s Yoda (and other miscellany)!! Posted by: Bill Cable 01.24.07 12:01am It's looking like a sparse update this week. So I'm going to go ahead and post some links to other stuff. We didn't make any of it, but we pointed you in the right direction, so we get all the credit, right?
Yeah, it's a short list. But it's something. Don't bitch and moan... we do this stuff for free, after all.

Holograms not included Posted by: Tresob Yr 01.24.07 12:01am With the 30th Anniversary Collection just around the corner, loose holograms across the world have been getting as jumpy as a couple of yellowing POTF2 stormtroopers with paint wear in an Order 95 comic. Witness the terror strike their translucent little hearts in the harrowing comic strip that follows! (P.S. Try not to notice the lack of background graphics. My hunting party got lost in Garamsythe Waterway in a failed attempt to take down a mutated Flan, thus wasting my the precious geek time...I mean free time...I normally use to add the finishing touches to my comic.)

Oh why can't I write news anymore??!! Posted by: Bill Cable 01.31.07 12:01am It used to be I'd write faux news stories for this site like every other week. And occasionally they were even funny. It was fantastic stuff! But these days, I don't write anything anymore. I just plug my art, my auctions, ad do this comic. Is the magic gone? Will I ever get it back? Who knows? I guess I should be content that I still begrudgingly draw a comic every week. And hey... I even wrote this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!
