With the holiday season fast approaching, I've decided to give a gift to one lucky reader! OK, actually I'm just suffering through a bad case of writer's block (or is it PhotoShopper's block?) and this is an easy way not to have to come up with anything new for 2 weeks. ;-)

Anyway, I've decided to hold a contest! Have you always wanted to be a character in the Star Wars Universe? Well if you have, you are in luck!

Here's the deal: Send me a picture of your face (a close-up would be great), and I'll PhotoShop one lucky winner's image on a Star Wars character's body! Show your family! Impress your friends! Guaranteed conversation piece!

Send your image by 9:00 Eastern on Sunday. The winner will be shown on next weeks update (and I'll email my creation to you as well). The best part is, unlike one of Toasty's contests... I'll actually come through with this one! :-P

Here are some examples for your perusal:

Stay tuned next week for the lucky winner!

New "Hot Babe" Cable Original!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 11.19.03 12:01am
Ah... one of my greatest joys in running this site is when I get to post a new piece of artwork. And this latest piece is really worthy of feeling joy over. The end result of this effort is just wonderful. As my patron expressed it: "it is sweeeeeeeeeeet." Hopefully this one will motivate some of you people out there to order more female Star Wars characters! Or any other Star Wars character... money's money. So head on over to the "Cable Original Star Wars Gallery" and check out the fruit of my labors. Who's got mad skillz? That's right... Cable's got mad skillz!

Be thankful this week!

What do you have to be thankful about? How's about the great comedy you get week after week on CreatureCantina.com? Or should I say, the great FREE comedy...? So here's to CreatureCantina.com being toasted over a thousand dinner tables this Thanksgiving!! And don't forget the pumpkin pie, or this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!!

Skywalker Reunion for Thanksgiving
Posted by: Big E 11.26.03 12:01am
Word comes in that the Skywalker family is planning on a family reunion for the Thanksgiving weekend. Inside sources say this will be the first time the entire family has settled down together.

Speaking from an unknown location, but presumably a hidden Rebel base, Princess Leia issued the following statement:

"Dark Lord of the Sith or not, Anakin Skywalker is my father and because of that, I find myself looking forward to spending this holiday weekend with him, my estranged mother and Luke, my long-lost brother."

Not to be outdone by her daughter, Padme Amidala Skywalker released this rebuttal, also from hiding; "I love my daughter very much, but feel that the last place I want to spend my holiday is across the dinner table from that one-armed, Tusken Raider-killing monster, Anakin Skywalker."

Imperial headquarters on Coruscant, and home office for Darth Vader, could not be reached for comment.

Taking a much more philosophical approach to the entire situation, Luke Skywalker appeared on the HoloNet to say that he was all for a family reunion. "I sense good in Vader. And watching me carve up a turkey on Thursday is sure to put a smile on even his face."

And the winner is...

Last week I announced my super-cool "PhotoShop your head on a Star Wars character's body" contest in which I would...well... PhotoShop his/her head on a Star Wars character's body. Catchy title, no?

And the winner is...

Wait for it...

NOT ONE FREAKIN PERSON!!!! I GO OUTTA MY WAY AND OFFER TO PUT YOUR UGLY MUG INTO MY ART AND THE ONLY EMAIL I GOT ALL WEEK WAS "MALE ENHANCEMENT" OFFERS!!!

Stay tuned next week for my new "Go Fall into an Open Sewer and Die" Contest!

Note to readers: CC.com does not advocate the act of falling into an open sewer and dying. This is a comedy site, and comments like these should be taken in stride. Although, if you do fall into an open sewer... SEND US A PIC!

Posted by: Steve "Solo" Rensi 11.26.03 12:01am
Greetings readers! CC.com is thrilled to introduce our newest staffer: Steve "Solo" Rensi! Steve's a photo comic artist. Think of POTFtoo.com or Toy Fare's action figure "Big Shot" feature. Steve continues the POTFtoo.com tradition with "Galactic Postal Delivery." But be warned - this is a comic strip fit only for publication on CreatureCantina.com. It features adult themes, language, and violence not suitable for small children. We at CC.com wouldn't have it any other way!!! You've been warned...

LFL news: "Twisted" Clone Wars!!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 11.26.03 12:01am
There's something cooking up on Skywalker Ranch... ideas bubbling over in the minds at the highest level of Lucas' company. And CreatureCantina.com has your first SNEAK PEAK at a dramatic new project!!!

Fresh on the heels of the very successful Cartoon Network "Clone Wars" Micro-series, the big heads at LFL are looking for more ways to cash in. And just like the "Unleashed" line, they've stolen their latest idea from McFarlane Toys. The latest brain-child: a melding of the Clone Wars cartoon and McFarlane's "Twisted Land of Oz" line of action figures!!!

Intrigued? Well CreatureCantina.com got our hands on some internal LFL presentation boards which include actual concept sketches of the new line and their back stories!! Hurry up and download them now - we're expecting to receive a C&D order from LFL any minute!!! Enjoy!!!!!

Super-Lame Update!!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 12.03.03 12:01am
It looks like the holiday weekend was too much for me and my staff. The result: today's anemic update. The only thing I have besides my comic is this funny video:

Obi-Wan shops for a car

I got that off the Garrison Carida mailing list. Speaking of GC, might as well throw in a final plug for the PSWCS/Toy Heaven/Garrison Carida Toy Drive. If you mail out a donation today, it will probably arrive in time for Saturday's events. And if you're in Philly, stop by Toy Heaven on Saturday to meet a dozen Stormtroopers in full armor! Donate a Star Wars toy and get your photo with the troops!

I guess that's about all I can squeeze out of the turnip this week. On to the comic strip!!

And a comic to end it all
Posted by: Bill Cable 12.10.03 12:01am
How was that for an update? All credit goes to my faithful staff... because just like this site, my contributions always suck. But I keep on trudging along anyway despite all the critical denigration. And here's the latest effort... this week's edition of "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!!

Random Thoughts and Advice from Galactic Postal Delivery's #1 Postal Guy, Han Solo.

  1. It takes two, count him two, blaster shots to take care of an angry Massiff.
  2. Don't eat shrimp in front of Ackbar, apparently its offensive or something.
  3. Shiny objects can distract Lando long enough for you to jump out the nearest window.
  4. Lobot and microwaves just don't mix.
  5. Chewie's hair can turn up in the weirdest places (Arrarrrggg Ruuuurrrg - the sink did not clog itself!).

Big E's Best and Worst of 2003!!!
Posted by: Big E 12.10.03 12:01am
It's getting close to the end of the year and it's time to put together the Best & Worst list, through my eyes, of the Star Wars world.

Last year I said that 2002 was a really good year, and it was. It was a movie year, we had Celebration II and we had a ton of new collectibles that were easy to find in stores. Midnight Madness wasn't quite what it was for Episode 1, but you could still get out to a Wal-Mart Supercenter or the odd Toys-R-Us at midnight on April 23rd to get your Attack of the Clones toy fix. This year things were different.

New EU Cable Original!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 12.10.03 12:01am
So who's the coolest character in the Expanded Universe? Everyone knows there's only one answer to that question: THRAWN. He's blue he's so cool. And what's not cool about a blue alien with red, glowing eyes who rose to the top of the Imperial Navy despite a policy against all aliens, including blue aliens with red, glowing eyes?

Despite his coolness, Thrawn posed unique challenges. The guy is cool due to his intellect... not because he's good at wielding a lightsaber or at jumping off buildings. And it's a lot harder to depict power, determination and intellect than it is to depict somebody jumping off a building. That's especially true when you want to get something that looks dynamic and interesting. I went through a bunch of mental images and sketches before I came up with something worth drawing. It was worth the effort. The end product satisfied me and my patron!! And in the end, that's really all that matters. So check out my latest success - the latest addition to the "Cable Original Star Wars Gallery!!!"

Weirdest thing you'll see on CC.com THIS YEAR!!

We here at CC.com have posted some outrageous content (the Galactic Postal Delivery comic strip comes to mind). But nothing even comes close to this... this... ABOMINATION!! I don't know what other word to describe this... Flash... "game." How horrible can it be? Well, I'll let title speak for itself...

CC.com the center of controversy AGAIN!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 12.17.03 12:01am
Well wouldn't you know it... someone's pissed off and has to bring me into it. Some guy was banned from the RS.com forums for violating their policies, and thinks I'm doing the same and getting unfair treatment. Here's his post (posted in RASSCV for some odd reason...):

The Problem With The Rebelscum Forums

As for the other forum members that are guilty of doing what I did, yet still get away with it, the two that stand out the most are Ryan Shaw (Bantha5) and Bill Cable. Both of these members have links to businesses that sell non-licensed Star Wars items. So there you have an example of two forum members that were and still are breaking two rules, one having a link to a business in their sig line, and two, the businesses sell items that are not allowed to be sold on the forums.

I mean come on... WTF??? Dude's site... all it was was a place to hock repro decals. There was no meaningful content. There was no entertainment value. It's just a place to buy stickers so unscrupulous losers can make their vintage vehicles look like their stickers are intact for gullible eBay newbies.

By comparison, nobody would accuse CreatureCantina.com of being a site whose sole purpose is to sell my artwork! Nobody would accuse me of being some sort of self-promoting link whore!! So don't try equating CC.com with some profit-driven sticker repro joint! And don't go accusing my bestest buddy Phil of favoritism!! Did I say bestest buddy? I meant casual acquaintance. No favortism here. And stop trying to mess up my sweetheart deal!!!

In honor of Wilbur and Orville Wright, and their astonishing achievement of sustained powered flight which happened on this day, 17 December 1903, we here at CreatureCantina.com would also like to recognize another great accomplishment that happened a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. The first flight of the Rebel X-Wing Starship. The fine folks at CreatureCantina.com are the only proprietors of this rarely seen, never before published image that was taken at the very moment of lift-off. A "Cable Original" of consequence!!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 12.17.03 12:01am
Let me start by saying that I enjoy each and every "Cable Original" drawing that I'm given the chance to draw. I mean... you guys out there are giving me money to do something I thoroughly enjoy. I'm extremely lucky in that respect.

And even though each drawing is a wonderful experience, every once in a while something special comes around. This is one of those time. Because this time I'm in the unique position of interpreting a genuine icon of the Original Trilogy. The icon known to many as "Ice Cream Maker Guy!" The good folks over at Decipher call him Willrow Hood.

I'm honored that Scott chose to commission this artwork... making me a part of the ICMG phenomenon. I'm humbled to be a part of something so much bigger than me. In doing this drawing, I've become part of a legend. A movement. A CRUSADE!! For that opportunity, I will forever be grateful to Scott.

For more info on ICMG, you can visit the official "Ice Cream Maker Guy" web site:

And don't forget to sign the ICMG on-line petition - our effort to get Hasbro to make an ICMG action figure!!

So do you want to see my addition to the myth? Then check out the "Cable Original Star Wars Art Gallery!!" And be sure to check out the T-shirt I designed for the DC Metro Area Star Wars Collecting Club in the "Other Art" section at the bottom of the page!

Max Rebo Band to Release New Album
Posted by: Jedi Tronzo 12.24.03 12:01am
It's their first new album in 20 years!!!

With the start of the new year right around the corner, the gang from Jabba's Palace is back in the studio recording their first new album in over two decades. Around the Galaxy and Back Again is due out in stores sometime in March. The first single that will be released from the album is Scalper's Paradise. In talking with Max Rebo, he said that the band wanted to do something new that reflected today's society and the band. The band also wanted to get back to it's roots with just the three original members, Sy Snootles, Droopy McCool and Max Rebo. Barquin Dan, as well as Rappertunie make special guest performances on the first release. "We released some tribute albums when the Special Edition was in theaters in the later part of the 90's, but it wasn't the true Max Rebo Band. After the release of the Special Edition, we all went our separate ways for awhile, Sy was working on her fourth marriage, Droopy was in and out drug rehab, he became hooked in the mid 80's after the release of ROTJ. He couldn't handle the fame."

'Tis the season and all that... but know what's nicest about holiday greetings? When I don't even have to write them myself!! I'll leave it to one of my faithful readers!!

Hi Bill

I'm sure you've seen your share of Star Wars related holiday decor. One of my co-workers, however, has taken a holiday tradition to new heights thanks to some inspiration from a galaxy far, far away.

By replacing the traditional Christmas star with the very un-traditional (yet infinitely more cool) Jabba torso, we get a much more festive version of the "filthy, worm-ridden piece of slime".

Personally, I'd like to see a grudge match between this guy and the Burl Ives snowman from the Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer gift pack!

Love the web site, and thanks again for the EP1 Threepio!!

Happy Holidays
Jim

Wrapping up 2003 in style
Posted by: Bill Cable 12.31.03 12:01am
Hello gents!! (we all know there aren't any ladies in the audience...)

So today's the day... the last day of 2003! And what a year it's been! We've been through historic times both on this planet and in a galaxy far, far away! On terra firma, I completed a huge collecting goal of mine... getting an example of every vintage ROTJ and POTF release figure on a Tri-logo cardback... except Madine. It was a goal four years in the making, which started with my desire to have all 8 Ewoks on identical cardbacks!

In the Star Wars realm, we had the first half of the Clone Wars cartoon micro-series. That was some cool shiznit. And principle filming ended in the final Star Wars film that will ever be filmed (as such things are claimed). And we learned that the Original Trilogy DVD set is on the way (WooHoo!!!). I don't know if it'll compare to a set of bootlegs of the original versions of the films, but it's something.

And finally, for 51 consecutive weeks, we here at CC.com have brought you laughs and cheer. And we've brought you 51 weeks of "The Cantina" Comic strip. That was until today. Today it becomes 52!!! (just a disclaimer, for all I know it could be 53... sometimes the weeks work out odd that way. And with the last strip coming on New Year's Eve, I wouldn't bet against it. But you get my damn point, so don't read into it too literally.) So Happy New Year and enjoy 2003's last installment of "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!!

D'oh!

A Cable Droids Custom in France!!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 01.14.04 12:01am
From time to time I check my access stats to see where I'm getting hits from. I always get a bunch from places you'd expect... RS forums, KennerToys.com, AllTroops, ICMG's homepage... but every once in a while I get hits from odd places... foreign forums and such. Such hits recently came from a French forum, which led me to discover that one of my Droids Customs was getting some press. Check out the last photo in the following post:

http://mykennel.net/mintinbox/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2187

I took French in high school and college, so I can figure out that most of the comments about the Bossk are positive. Positive or negative, it's great to see one of my pieces being used as a size reference!

Rebel Commander WALKS AGAIN!!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 01.14.04 12:01am
Rebel Commander Bren Derlin was a rising star in the Rebel ranks, with an aptitude for strategy and field command. That was until the evacuation of Hoth... when he was paralyzed from the neck down after being thrown by his Taun Taun. Instead of finding himself on the fast track to Colonel, he found himself lying in a sick bed. Medical Droids painted a grim picture of Derlin's future, with virtually no chance that he'd ever recover.

But ol' Bren would not give in. He decided to explore alternative treatments... and a mixture of cyborg technology lead to success!! Now, after months of intense physical therapy allowing him to master the hardware, Bren Derlin can walk again!! See the photos below to see the amazing technology which allows it to happen!

'Droids'-inspired Cable Original
Posted by: Bill Cable 01.14.04 12:01am
Just in case you didn't notice, we really weren't here the past couple weeks. I was on vacation in Florida, and basically told my staff to take a few weeks off. Hence the lame, comic-strip-only updates.

Now I'm back, and CC.com updates are back with me!! We're happy to be bringing you some substantive comedic content yet again. And we'll start this update with a bang - A new "Cable Original" drawing!!! This drawing is another inspired by the Expanded Universe... the Vintage Expanded Universe! And I always love doing an EU drawing. This time it's the hot rodder from Ingo - Thall Joben!

This drawing was particularly challenging, as it was difficult to find any good photo references for the character. I ended up using photos of the coin proto and the action figure. The figure was actually very helpful... those sculptors used some fantastic detail in Thall! And I think I did a great job in using what I had available to put together a compelling piece of artwork. Check it out in the "Cable Original Star Wars Art Gallery!!!"

Random Thoughts and Advice from Galactic Postal Delivery's #1 Postal Guy, Han Solo.

Look...I realize this Random Blaster Shots aren't always funny. I'm just trying to keep interest peeked, between GPD episodes. However if you think there funny, thank you and please tell me.

  1. Do not, no matter what call Bubba a monkey. He doesn't take it well.
  2. Stormtroopers actually enjoy a nice little insurance policy.
  3. Bubba single-handedly killed and devoured the Clydesdales after they spilt beer they were delivering to him.
  4. Lobot's not allowed back to the zoo. Neither is Lando.
  5. Mace Windu and his Weapons Shop are single handedly responsible for driving the U.N out of Duct Tape City.

Big ups to my homies
Posted by: Bill Cable 01.21.04 12:01am
Being the webmaster of a hugely popular website like CC.com, I get E-mail from people all the time begging for links to their sites. "Please, PLEASE Mr. Cable... all I want is a little link. We're dying over here. If you could even drop just a few crumbs for us, we'd be forever in your debt!!" It gets annoying. But being the lucky recipient of frequent plugs from sites bigger than mine... like RS.com and GH.com... I know how nice it is to receive the plugs, so I do my best to give the plugs.

Who's to plug? Well, first of all the good guys over at Garrison Carida, who just launched a redesigned site. Carida does all sorts of cool charity work, when they're not begging for toys on street corners. Despite their propensity for begging, they didn't have to beg me for this plug. Just bribe me...

Then there's Jaster Mereel from over at MandalorianWarrior.com MW.com is trying to be for Jango Fettishers what the 501st does for Stormtrooper freaks. So if you got a hankering for some olive drab chest armor, or want to don the famous blue and purple, T-visored helmet, then check them out!

I had a lot of fun putting together those puzzles, and you all seem to really like 'em, but I'm going to shelf them for now. Normally I'm all about driving winning ideas into the ground until all that's left is the bitter taste of regret, but I can't have you kids thinking I'm a one trick pony, now can I?

Here are the solutions to last week's puzzle. Drum roll please....

  1. Lando Calrissian
  2. Paploo
  3. Chief Chirpa

You haven't seen the last of the puzzles though, that's for damn sure. So don't you fret! I'm sure to bust these bad boys out the next time I get hit with a mad case of writer's block. Fo Schizzle.

Generally I come up with these ideas on my own. But when CreatureCantina.com gets an E-mail from someone claiming: "I've got a Star Wars idea that I (and apparently only I) think is funny," we know we've gotta explore that idea. This Quick Shot was inspired by a concept from Kevin Lentz, a distinguished member of OSWCC. Thanks Kevin!!

Back in college, I did a daily comic strip for the Cavalier Daily for four years. I'd basically spend an hour a night at pen & paper, coming up with ideas and fleshing them out. And when you brainstorm for ideas every week on a consistent basis, you get good at it. I'd be able to pull story arcs out of the ether at will. It was fantastic!

The I graduated, and had to get a "real" job. And drawing daily funnies went by the wayside. And so did my ability to come up with ideas for comic strips off the top of my head. With the lack of reader-submitted ideas for the strip, I'm pretty much screwed when I need to come up with something on my own on deadline. (I do have a few reader-submitted ideas sitting around, but it's always something like "18 different people are beating up this jawa... and in the next frame they're all disco dancing..." where the amount of art is simply not doable. If you really want your idea considered, keep it to 2 or 3 characters). But this week, I came up with an idea all my own... and it's actually pretty funny! I'm proud of myself. I still got it... at least to some degree. And I really hope you enjoy this week's edition of "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!!

Back in Black

Have you seen the "Back in Black" Episode 3 clip? If not, or if you are staying away from it because you don't want any spoilers I promise not to ruin anything for you.

However, I have to comment because the footage shown in the clip is absolutely jaw dropping good. We see hints of the final duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin and it is intense! According to a report on TheForce.net, Nick Gillard made a comment that the final duel will possibly be 12 minutes long and from the shots in this clip it appears that Ewan and Hayden will do much of the fighting themselves.

Other quick shots in the clip show the actors joking around and there are plenty of smiles from the cast and Lucas himself.

If this clip is any indication of what is to come from Episode 3, I think fans everywhere can be confident that this movie will rock!

A New "Cable Original"... of Who??
Posted by: Bill Cable 01.28.04 12:01am
OK... let me be completely honest here... back in November, when this drawing was reserved, I had never before heard the name "Warmaster Tsavong Lah." Nor did I have any clue was a "Yuuzhan Vong" was. I guess I'm showing my colors as a non-reader of EU novels.

As a result... this drawing presented unique challenges. And not only did I know absolutely nothing about this character... the visual references for him were nowhere to be found!! I ended up working from the armor pictured on the SW.com web site, and his head as depicted on the cover of the NJO book "Star by Star." Frankly, I though the head on the SW.com art blew chunks... it makes Tsavong Lah look like something out of GWAR, not something out of the SW Universe.

How did it turn out? Well, I'm thrilled with the end result. But you can see from my opening that I'm probably not the best person to judge it. I leave it to you EU freaks to say. Express your opinion in the Cantina Forums after you check out the latest addition to the "Cable Original" Star Wars Art Gallery!!!!!
