MORE Lost lines from Episode 1!!
Posted by: Bodondagweedo 10-9-02 12:01am
Believe it or not, Darth Maul was intended to be a lot more verbose in Episode 1. But like many cool elements, Maul's lines were cut to improve the flow of the film. It's a low down dirty shame... imagine how cool E1 could have been had this line hadn't been excised!

Bill Cable's Evil Creation RESURRECTED!!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 10-9-02 12:01am
You may not know this, but "The Cantina" isn't the first comic strip I've done. Nope... back from 1993 to 1997 I did a strip for the Cavalier Daily newspaper at the University of Virginia. And I carved out my own infamous niche at the University... gaining unprecedented notoriety. Of course all the publicity I got was bad, because my comic was anti-PC at the height of the political correctness movement. It was ugly. I could fill a book with my collection of anti-Cable articles that were published in rival newspapers.

Well, in May of 1997 the last "The Peanut Gallery" comic strip was published, and the whole U.Va. community breathed a sigh of relief as one of its greatest banes expired. I kept up an archive of my old strips on my personal web site for a few years after I graduated, but that site became SWDrawings.com and the archive was moved into some "old site" directory on the server. Then SWDrawings.com became CreatureCantina.com and the archive was lost forever.

Until today!! I've begun re-archiving all my old strips that the CD put up on the Web. I completed the first year earlier this week... 1995. And the scourge that should have died years ago has been reborn! READ IT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! "The Peanut Gallery" Comic Strip Archive.

"Clone-y Express?"
Posted by: Dark Hybrid 10-9-02 12:01am
The U.S.P.S., also known as the United Spaceport Postal Service was in full force once again this week, after a successful job fair and the enrollment of over 1,000 laid off Republic Clone Troopers! After a vicious strike by the Ugnaughts Union, the U.S.P.S. were looking to deliver, so to speak. Armed with packages, letters, and such, these new recruits were ready to tackle their first day as the galaxies new postal carriers!

"Palpatine over ordered a lot of Clonetroopers from Kamino you see, and he had no use for us. Just so happens the U.S.P.S. were looking for a few good clones. One thing led to another, and here I am, back in a job!", says one Yellow Clonetrooper.

The Clone Commander had this to say. "Palpatine over ordered a lot of Clonetroopers from Kamino you see..and..". I excused myself, and canceled my remaining interviews with the Clones.

Once U.P.S., aka the United Postal Spaceport distributors caught wind of this, they immediately signed on galactic engineering giants, Macrosith, to mass produce a fleet of R5-D4 units. However, it was a failed venture. The day of the shipment, all the units arrived with bad motivators.

Within only 5 days of the mass hiring project, U.S.P.S. has regained it's number one ranking among postal carriers in the galaxy. The new class of postal recruits, dubbed "The Cloney Express", are enjoying the fruits of their labor, as all have been guaranteed a hefty bonus, as well as new, distinguishing uniforms after 1 month of service.

Bill, use the attached picture anywhere in the story. The subtitle should read, "The Cloney Express and their "Special Delivery".

...but nobody is around to hear it does it really make a sound?

Or how about this one... "If a web site is updated, but none of the contributors are submitting any stories will the readership stick around?" I hope and pray it will because somehow the personal lives of SEVEN of NINE of the other people who write stuff for this site is preventing them from writing any stories the past couple weeks. Bunch of lazy bastards!! Get a job in tech support... then you'll have all the time in the world!!

I'm going to try to make due again this week, but I sure hope these guys break out of their slump. I think the only thing that might get to them is a butt-load of pestering E-mails from our loyal fans. Their addresses are all listed above... ;-)

Let's wrap things up with a Star Wars comic...

The liberation of an AFA-graded figure!
Posted by: Bill Cable 10-16-02 12:01am
A few weeks ago I got a sweet deal on a very nice Tri-logo Amanaman on eBay. I got this sucker for $140! Why? Because it was graded "AFA70." The bubble is in fantastic condition, the cardback is flat, crease-free and unpunched and the figure had no flaws. Why did it grade so low? Because it has that big, ugly "New Figure £1.59" sticker on it. Thankfully this sticker doesn't bother me in the slightest.

So I win this figure, and it's entombed in the big AFA acrylic case with this sticker telling me it's in "70" condition. That's a D+. As much as I don't like some expert trying to tell me what condition my figure is in, I like such a low and subjective grade on this figure even less. The AFA case had to go.

How does one go about opening a professionally-sealed AFA case? That was a big worry I had when I was bidding on this figure. But I would receive an answer. Shortly after I won the auction, Chris Maybury kindly let the world know by posting my win in the Rebelscum forums.
http://forums.rebelscum.com/ubb/...topic;f=1;t=005513

A few days later I received a phone call from a friendly AFA employee who read the thread and had some pointers. He said the back-bottom edge of the case is not sealed to allow for air flow. He recommended needle-nosed pliers, but I opted for a knife.

I shoved that sucker in there, gave a twist and my Amanaman had its first real taste of freedom in who knows how long.

The hole was the perfect size for a big ol' honkin' screwdriver. I popped that in there, gave a few pries and twists and a big hunk of case broke off... tearing the AFA sticker in two. Damn it all to hell I was hoping to reseal this sucker with and inferior Tri-logo Amanaman inside and selling it on eBay for mad cash.

I methodically broke off small piece after small piece of the bottom of the case until I opened enough of a hole for the huge bubble to clear the case without damaging it. Then I slid my AFA Amanaman to freedom!!

So what does it look like? It's gorgeous! Now it's not my "AFA70 D+" Amanaman... it's my beautiful, near-mint Amanaman! And in the unlikely event that I ever sell it, it'll be my "Gorgeous C9++ RARE" Tri-logo Amanaman. Check out these photos...

And now my Amanaman is safely sealed in a good old fashioned Star Case along side the rest of my POTF-line Tri-logos. I have the ability to pop it open and appreciate it any time I like. And it looks so pretty and uniform on the shelf with the rest of them.

Be sure to check back next week when you can pre-order my official "I don't need anybody to tell me the condition of my own damn figures" T-shirt!!

Are YOU an authentic Star Wars Collector??
Posted by: Bill Cable 10-16-02 12:01am
You may THINK you're an authentic Star Wars collector, but I'll bet you don't have the shirt to prove it! And everyone knows you're not a REAL collector if you don't have the shirt.

Well now you can get the shirt you need! Here it is... offered for the first time anywhere ever: THE "Star Wars Collector" T-shirt!! Actually, there's 3 different ones. Each will be screenprinted on a Gildan Ultra Cotton Heavyweight T-shirt. Check them out:

New Collector's Shirt:
Vintage Collector's Black Shirt:

Vintage Collector's White Shirt:

Where did these come from? Well, about a month ago Isaac Lew E-mailed me with a proposition. It was something along the lines of, "Dude... draw me some pictures and I'll put them on a T-shirt." After some prodding I agreed. And then I went about putting together some of my finest T-shirt artwork ever!!!

So now that you've seen the designs and read the back-story, the next thing you'll want to know is "How do I get one???" Well, it's going to be a 2-part process. First Isaac needs to collect "commitments" to figure out what the pricing will be. If he can gather 30 orders per design he'll be able to sell them at either $14 or $15 per shirt + shipping (probably $14 for a white shirt, $15 for a black, slightly more for XXL and XXXL). Once he figures out the final price he'll E-mail you back, and you'll send in the money. It's as easy as that! He'll order the shirts and ship them out when they're done.

So how do you get in on the deal? You start by E-mailing Isaac with your name, address, shirt sizes and quantities. His E-mail address is: ilew@attbi.com. Don't miss this chance to show off your Star Wars collecting pride!!!

That slime-eating little freak!!

Fundraiser for victims of SirSteve!

Does everyone remember the tale of Kirsten Schaulin and the headless UZAY Emperor's Royal Guard? It's ok if you don't... this was years ago. The long and the short of it is this... *deep breath*... a guy named Steve Comenzo who shared a telephone number, post office box and E-mail account with his "cousin," the founder and administrator of SirSteve's Guide also named "Steve," sold Kirsten an UZAY Emperor's Royal Guard described as "mint" but in reality it had a cracked bubble, holes punched in the cardback and its head was broken off, then refused to refund the substantial payment Kirsten sent to him in good faith. *second deep breath*... After a lengthy investigation it turned out that not only did Steve Comenzo sell misrepresented vintage bootleg figures but he also scalped newly-released POTF2 figures for big profits that just happened to be the SAME EXACT figures that faithful readers of SirSteve's Guide mailed to Comenzo's "cousin," the heretofore surnameless "SirSteve" as gifts or at cost when he requested them of his readership. *final deep breath* Despite mounting evidence that Comenzo and SirSteve were the same person SirSteve continued to deny the charges, refused to send Kirsten her refund, and eventually fled the USENET forever (years later SirSteve was proven conclusively to be Steve Comenzo based on transactions he made through eBay, but SirSteve still hasn't admitted to his wrongdoings or apologized)

Sadly, Kirsten still hasn't recovered financially from this travesty. I feel it is my duty to publicize her latest auction the help her dig herself out of that hole. So please, if you can find it in your heart to help this innocent victim of SirSteve's fraud, please check out this auction and maybe her other auctions and bid on something.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem=1573000271

PS: All that financial recovery stuff is a line of bull to tug at your heart strings. She's actually saving up for a 57" TV. But still, go ahead and bid.

Oh no... we're losing our shirts on this deal!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 10-23-02 12:01am
And I mean that literally! Well sort of... see, last week I got an E-mail from Isaac asking what I thought of him posting our Star Wars Collector T-shirts on eBay. There was another E-mail a few messages down in my mailbox saying "I couldn't wait, here's the URL!!"

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem=1779203470

So what can I say about this auction? First of all, Isaac made one HUGE mistakes! The BIN price is $18 with free shipping... but the auction title DOESN'T say "free shipping!!" So 95% of the people who see the auction in the featured section will think the shirt is $18 + shipping and they won't even look at it. Who the hell wants to pay $18 + shipping for a T-shirt??? Nobody!! He would have done MUCH better to list them at $14.15 + shipping.

Other than that and NOT waiting for my response to his original E-mail, the auction looks pretty good. Unfortunately, they're not selling. As of writing this he sold 8 shirts. If he doesn't sell like 30 of them at this price he'll be paying out an extra couple bucks for every shirt instead of breaking even or making a buck. The great T-shirt project may die an ugly, premature death before it even gets started!!

The auction ends later today. If you want to buy one of these shirts PLEASE go through eBay. Don't send Isaac to the poor house over this foolhardy risk (not even considering that not enough will sell, who knows how LFL would react if they saw this...).

Does everyone remember the tale of Kirsten Schaulin and the headless UZAY Emperor's Royal Guard? It's ok if you don't... this was years ago. You can read all about it here:

The USENET Archive of the UZAY ERG Fiasco

To summarize the course of events (based on the above link), Kirsten purchased an UZAY Emperor's Royal Guard from Steve Comenzo. It was advertised to her as mint, but arrived with a cracked bubble, holes punched in the cardback, and the figures HEAD was broken off! Comenzo refused to refund her money (and UZAY Royal Guards ain't cheap!!). After some investigation someone connected the zoman@juno.com account to SirSteve from SirStevesGuide.com. SirSteve denied it. He even said his own name wasn't "Comenzo" (in hilarious fashion, blaming his "roommate" and "cousin"). In the end Kirsten never recovered a penny from Comenzo.

TODAY, October 24, 2002, SirSteve sent an E-mail to my web host stating his last name is "Comenzo".

It only took SirSteve 5 years to admit what his last name is. But he still claims this deal never happened! So what are the possibilities?

  • SirSteve's cousin, Steve Comenzo, ripped off Kirsten.
  • Somebody impersonating SirSteve, somebody who knew that his last name was "Comenzo" even though that wasn't public knowledge at the time, created the zoman account then ripped off Kirsten.
  • SirSteve himself ripped off Kirsten, lied about his identity back then, and continues to lie about the whole transaction today.

Based on the evidence provided I'll let you decide.

Sadly, Kirsten still hasn't recovered financially from this travesty. I feel it is my duty to publicize her latest auction the help her dig herself out of that hole. So please, if you can find it in your heart to help this innocent victim of Steve Comenzo, please check out this auction and maybe her other auctions and bid on something.

Jabba the Hutt: A toker or a joker?
Posted by: toasty 10-30-02 12:01am
Jabba the Hutt's palace was raided this weekend in one of the largest stings in recent Republic history.

Supreme Chancellor Palpatine was quoted as saying "Excellent, everything is going as I have foreseen." When asked what exactly that meant, Mas Amadas would only state that the Chancellor was very tired, and that his work load was taking a toll on him.

A Clone Trooper patrol craft made a major drug bust last Tuesday and today they're bringing the seized drugs back to shore.

The Clone captain said that as they approached suspected drug smugglers in their go-fast starship, they saw the smugglers ejecting bales of marijuana into space.

Officials say they first spotted the ship Tuesday afternoon from a Republic Gunship patrolling the Tatooine system. That's when the individuals on board the ship allegedly began dumping their contraband overboard.

The Republic cutter Manitou recovered 63 bales of pot and brought the drugs to Port of Tatooine to turn it over to Republic officials. Authorities were not able to apprehend the alleged smugglers.

A spokes-creature for Jabba had this to say: "I don't know why Jabba would be questioned over a matter like this. Selling pot? Why would Jabba do that? He's a legitimate business man. He doesn't do anything 'illegal.'"

I managed to speak with Jabba himself.

When asked about the incident, Jabba told me he was appalled that a person was busted with such a large amount of pot.

"That was some good sh*t, man.", was Jabba's oddly placed quote. I asked him to turn down his "Phish" record so I could hear him better. When I pressed him for details, Jabba was quick to have his Gamorean Guards escort me out of his palace.

What does all this mean? I'm not sure, but if this secret picture of Jabba is a sign, then I would say I know where those 63 bales of pot were heading.

Bill Cable - UNLEASHED!!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 10-30-02 12:01am
I know a lot of people checked out the site last Wednesday and Thursday only to find a message that the site was unavailable. And some of you speculated correctly... Oznemoc's thugs tried to shut us down. SirSteve called my web host on his cell phone (he must have him on speed dial now) and made a baseless accusation of slander. I was able to prove my case by providing links detailing the transaction I described, and my host decided in my favor. I had to edit the story up a little bit and site some sources, but I ended up winning the battle. Believe it or not SirSteve initially demanded that I never mention "SirSteve," "SirSteve's Guide," or "Steve Comenzo" ever again!! AS IF!!! Those are all either public record or public domain.

So SirSteve took his shots at me... inconvenienced my readers for a couple days... and now it's payback time. You see, SirSteve wanted to shut us up here because he's afraid his sponsors might get wind of what he used to do on-line. For five years now he's been trying to get us to forget everything that happened. Well guess what Steve - the USENET has a long, LONG memory. And why don't we explore what secrets it holds.

Like, let's ask a question... was SirSteve a POTF2 SCALPER???

I can hear your gasps of disbelief from here... "No! Not SirSteve!!!" But not so fast! New evidence has surfaced which may compel you to rethink your position. Let me explain.

We know SirSteve's real name is Steve Comenzo. He admitted this to my web host last week (an admission which essentially rendered his slander charges invalid). We also know a guy posting as Zoman@juno.com was also named Steve Comenzo, based on (among many things) this post.

So what was Steve Comenzo... the "Zoman" Steve Comenzo... doing back in 1997? He was SCALPING POTF2 FIGURES!! Take a look at a sampling of some of the threads Mr. Comenzo posted to RASSCM: (please note: the prices sited sometimes include shipping, sometimes don't)

Now I don't know about you, but $8 to $10 + shipping on the newest waves back in '97... I'd call that scalping. Remember, these were the days back when people actually CARED about scalping... when selling figures at a mark-up of $3-5 was frowned upon. When collectors banded together and boycotted scalpers!! And in this exact climate we have Zoman selling dozens of different figures at big mark-ups. I could not find one example of Zoman offering figures at cost.

So this begs the question... Was SirSteve a scalper? Did he create this Zoman E-mail account to scalp figures without tarnishing his image as a collector-friendly webmaster? Is SirSteve the same person as Zoman DESPITE HIS DENIALS?? This is a question we all need to answer for ourselves. And now that it's out in the open, we should.

Stay on Target for low low prices
Posted by: St. Eve 10-30-02 12:01am
CC.com welcomes our newest contributor: St. Eve!

Hoards of friendless shoppers swarmed to their local Targets this week to take advantage of the low low price of $2.99 for Star Wars Episode 2 Basic Action Figures. Around the aisles were heard statements such as, "Jar Jar sucks, but at $2.99 I'd be stupid not to buy him!" and "Now I can afford to get a Shaak Ti without background card to go with my loose Shaak Ti, carded Shaak Ti with background card, carded Shaak Ti with green lightsaber, carded Shaak Ti with blue lightsaber, carded Shaak Ti with the wrong character information, and carded Shaak Ti with misspelled name! Sh*t. Did I forget the Shaak Ti?"

Will Target manage to keep up with the demand? Will Wal-Mart and Toys R Us go bankrupt from price matching? Will anything worthwhile (deodorant perhaps?) ever go on megasale? Check the ads in your Sunday paper, kiddies, to find out.

Don't Buy Oscar's Cursed Cases!!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 10-30-02 12:01am
Hello loyal readers! I come to you this week with a warning... be careful if you order any custom acrylic figure cases from Oscar Didier. They're CURSED!! They destroy your figures!! It's tragic!!!!

Take for example my beautiful carded Tri-logo Stormtrooper... I purchased one of Oscar's "Slim" vintage cases to protect this beauty. Slim Cases are fantastic for the vintage collector because they're designed specifically for vintage-depth bubbles. It's a thousand times better than any universal acrylic case... those suckers can be 3 inches thick!! With this you're up close and personal with the bubble... the carded figure isn't swimming in space like in an AFA case. And it'll fit all but the thickest of vintage bubbles (anything thicker than 1-1/4" thick won't fit... I think that's limited to FX-7, Dengar and maybe a few Tri-logos). And at $8.50 a pop (special deals for bulk orders), you won't find a better deal!

But look what happened!! After a few hours in one of Oscar's cases, my beautiful Tri-logo Stormie transformed into a horrid, C7-YB ROTJ carded Stormtrooper on a wavy, damaged cardback!! I tried leaving it in for a couple more hours to see if it would go back, but it didn't. I'm out $100 on this sucker!!!!

And that's not the only problem I've encountered. I also purchased one of Oscar's custom acrylic Glasslite cases for my MOMC Glasslite C-3PO. I know what you're thinking... "Someone makes a case for Glasslite figures???" I was as shocked as you are! It's damn near impossible to find an affordable case for non-standard vintage cardback... but Oscar makes them all! Hungarian. Meccano Square. Rebo Band. Even custom sizes - all you have to do is send him the measurements and he'll make it for you. And the quality and price are unmatched. This Glasslite case was only $9.10!!

But just you leave your figures in one of them for any extended period and see what happens! With my Glasslite C-3PO, the cardback COMPLETELY DISINTEGRATED!!!! I was looking at it one minute and it was just a pretty as can be... looked away for a minute and WOOSH - the cardback's gone!! I looked for years for a nice carded Glasslite C-3PO with a mint bubble, and NOW IT'S GONE!!!

But the worst thing that happened to my was a problem with my vintage POTF C-3PO proof card. That's right... somebody makes an acrylic case especially for proof cards. No more cutting the bottom corners out of Star Cases to keep from damaging the square corners. No more bagging them in comic book bags so you can only appreciate the front. Now you can protect your proof card in one of Oscar's ultra-thin proof card cases. All the benefits of a top-loader hard case, plus it's the exact size of your proof card AND the front of your cardback doesn't press against the plastic (because prolonged contact to plastic could cause damage). And they're only $7.50 each!!

But damn them to hell THEY'RE CURSED TOO!!! After all the other problems I encountered I figured I'd better check to make sure the proof card was still OK. I went to slide it out of the case and... well... it's too horrible for words!! How could this happen??? WHY??? WHY????

So whatever you do... no matter how incredible the prices are... no matter how nice a guy Oscar may be... no matter how fantastic your carded collection would look in these beautiful, professional cases... DON'T VISIT OSCAR'S SITE! You'll be too tempted to resist buying some cases for your collection, and these cursed cases will get you, too!!! So don't click this link: http://www.oscardidier.150m.com/cases.htm!! You've been warned!!!!!

Guess what we have here for you...

CORRECTION:
Posted by: Bill Cable 11-6-02 12:01am
Last week in this article, we urged readers NOT to buy Oscar's acrylic cases. In fact, we were supposed to recommend that people DO buy these high-quality cases. See, the more figures that are stored by these cursed cases, the more my own mint figures will eventually be worth (I already paid a medium to un-curse my cases). So PLEASE... Buy as many of Oscar's cases as you can afford! Visit his site here, and send orders to oscars@interclan.net.

Juvenile apprehended after speeder mishap
Posted by: toasty 11-6-02 12:01am
Lando Calrissian was being held on suspicion flying drunk as a minor through the streets of Coruscant. He was arrested after a his crashed speeder was discovered with an empty 40 of Colt45 under the seat.

When asked for comment, Mr. Calrissian's attorney refused to answer questions, only stating "My client is not a scoundrel."

According to witnesses at the scene, a speeder being piloted by Mr. Calrissian nearly struck a group of Jedi younglings, and ran down several street cleaning droids. The speeder then ran into the side of Dexter's Diner, damaging the speeder but leaving no damage to the building. Several clone troopers rushed to scene and appeared to have led Mr. Calrissian away.

If charged, he faces 2 years probation for piloting a speeder under the influence as an minor, and 25 hours community service with a 200 credit fine.

Empire rocked by election upset!!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 11-6-02 12:01am
Emperor Palpatine worked diligently to save face after an embarrassing election upset revealed after the polls closed Tuesday evening. With 98% of the polls reporting, Palpatine only succeeded in securing 99.865% of the vote. It seems that several write-in candidates garnered votes in a few outer-rim territories.

Palpatine was visibly upset by his lack of total support. "You'd think these peasants would have the sense to just check the box they're given instead of writing another candidate's name on the ballot... is it that difficult to follow simple instructions? The Stormtroopers who ran these polling stations should be shot. Hmmmm... excuse me one second... Hey Vader - Shoot the Stormtroopers that ran those polling stations!!"

Among the write-ins were "Mike Rotch" from Kinyen, "Hugh Jass" from Tatooine and "Ivana Tinkle" from Dagobah. Political analyst Ikbee Ein from Coruscant was particularly baffled by the strong support shown for these unknowns. "It's not unusual for a political outsider - a 'Hugh Jass' - to show up on election day. But nobody expected to see Mike Rotch today. But there you go... plain as day... here's Mike Rotch. What really blows me away is this ballot from Dagobah. Is there even anybody living on Dagobah??? Does anyone know Ivana Tinkle???"

An elite corps of Death Squad soldiers has been dispatched to each non-compliant polling station to investigate.

Be careful transporting your toys!
Posted by: Bill Cable 11-13-02 12:01am
This picture is real - not doctored in anyway - and was taken last week in Waldorf, OH by a Transportation Supervisor for a company that delivers toys to Toys R Us. When he saw it in the parking lot of IHOP, he went and bought a camera to take pictures.

The car is still running as can be witnessed by the exhaust. A woman is either asleep or otherwise out in the front seat passenger side. The guy driving it was over jogging up and down on Rt. 925 in the background. The witnesses said their physical state was OTHER than normal and the police just shook their heads in amazement. The driver finally came back after the police were there and was getting down at the back to cut the 'twine around the load. They told him to get back until it was taken off.

The Ephant Mon was loaded at Toys R Us. Their store manager said they had the customer sign a waiver! Both back tires are trashed. The back shocks were driven up through the floorboard. They estimated the load weight at 3000 lbs. The car is a VW Jetta with FL plates and the guy said he was headed for Annapolis.

It just goes to show, that Ephant Mon is one big friggin figure!!

Looks like today is "Bill Cable bragging" day or something. Normally I don't give free plugs for anything on this site except for CC.com employees. But this guy deserves a free plug...

The guy is Rafael Credico from Sao Paulo, Brazil. I purchased a Droids Glasslite C-3PO off of him after seeing his post in the GalacticHunter Vintage forums. It was a very smooth transaction... I paid through BidPay.com, faking an auction #, and the cost was only $14 (compared to $40+ through Western Union). A week after I paid Rafa sent me an E-mail asking if I received the box yet, and informing me that he sent me two different 3POs to choose from! The reason: "Due the fact that you collect mainly nice C-3PO in all variations, I decided for myself to send you also my other one C-3PO for you to choose which is the best for your collection," and "I know what is to be collector, and I want that you have the best C-3PO Droids figure of the ones that I have available nowadays."

I was blown away by his generosity... so I decided to give him a plug. He still has a bunch of Glasslites available. And take a look at the kind of product you'll be getting...

First of all, his packing is INSANE! Double-boxed. Wrapped in bubble wrap. Sandwiched between two pieces of Styrofoam cut to protect the bubble. Cardback sandwiched between two sheets of special paper to keep it from touching the foam. I've never seen figures so well-packed. They arrived showing no signs of wear from their international journey.

The C-3PO I chose is just gorgeous. It was much nicer than I'd hoped. The other one was nearly as nice... the only real flaw being some lifting on the interior edge of the bubble on one side (a trait VERY common for Glasslites). Take a looks at some photos.

So now I have it encased in one of Oscar's acrylic Glasslite cases. It displays fantastic. If these cases weren't cursed they'd be the best things on the market.

So there's how my fame as a C-3PO collector helped me out today. Sorry if it seems like a ton of photos, but I promised some guys that I'd take a bunch once it arrived. If you like it, I can recommend a guy who has another available...

It ain't easy being this pretty...

On Monday I stopped by TRU and grabbed one of their $9.99 DVD fliers. I figured I'd take it to Wal*mart after work and get a price-match. Little did I know how much of a price match I'd get! I checked the SW aisle (no Ephant Mon...) then headed over to the electronics department. I grabbed my copy of the widescreen edition and waited a few minutes while the clerk ran around looking for some soundtrack for a guy.

She came back and was very friendly, smiling and apologizing for my wait (this WM is a ghost town at 1am on a Monday). Then she take the flier and rings me up. I caught the price on the led display on the register and did a double-take. With tax it rang up at $7.41!! I slid my card, punched in my pin and took off running before the clerk changed her mind. I was looking at the receipt, and in addition to the $9.99 price match, it listed a $3.00 "price adjustment."

I spent some time trying to figure out where the heck that came from. I've had a couple Wal*marts price match then deduct an additional 10% of the difference. But never an additional 30%! So I came to the only logical conclusion... it must have been my stunning good looks. This clerk was a young woman... she was pretty cute (not that I was looking or anything... but when you find a young, cute, female working at a Wal*mart at 1am you can't help but noticing)... She must have been taken in by my good looks and hooked me up. At least that's the story I'm sticking to...

Don't believe me? Well here's the proof. The only better deal I've heard from anyone was a guy that got the DVD for $9.99 at TRU and got a Silver R2! But I haven't seen a lower price than $6.99 anyplace. I bought Saga figures back in May for $6.99!!

"The Cantina" examines your world...

You've read to the end of the update for one reason and one reason alone - biting social commentary!! I know that's what you always expect from my comic strip. And we deliver as usual in this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!!

Resculpt Rant
Posted by: Big_E 11-20-02 12:01am
Galactichunter.com posted a list of 2003 figures that we'll be seeing in waves due in February, May, August, and October. As with the current releases we're treated to both collections 1 and 2.

And how is it shaping up? Crappy. Well, not completely. If you take a look at just the Collection 2 lists it looks like Hasbro has knocked one out of the park. we'll be treated to figures such as Lama Su, Barriss Offee, Padawan Younglings and plenty of droids and aliens. All great choices for the first year after a movie release.

But looking down the Collection 1 list I felt that I was reading a list of 2002 figures. More Anakin, Obi-Wan, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Mace and Darth Vader. And a Flying R2-D2? Maybe that list looks like 1999's list.

And another Jango Fett? Wait, TWO more Jango Fett figures, one deluxe and one Jango Fett Clone Wars. We already have five Jango Fett Figures this year alone, counting the Deluxe. Granted he's a cool-as-hell bounty hunter but he got his head handed to him, literally, in AOTC. Why do we need more figures?

There are still some valid characters that I feel should have been included in the regular release somewhere like Poggle the Lesser, Beru and Owen and Cliegg Lars. And if they were going to do Padme again, why do her in the white outfit again? Why not choose from one of the MANY dresses she's seen in throughout the movie.

I understand the need to mix core characters in to keep the casual fan interested but this close to the movie, IMAX and DVD I would think that lesser characters would still be fresh in the mind and would be a draw. Bring out the classic characters and inundate us with the resculpts in 2004 when it's really an off year, right before gearing up for a wham-bam Star Wars movie finale in 2005.

I do have to make note of the deluxe assortments and the new Saga Scene packs. Looks like Hasbro may be answering some collectors calls for multi-packs of army builders as well as scenes we can assemble into things like a cantina bar, Jedi council and a Tatooine Homestead. Yeah! Too bad the entire line can't be as forward thinking.

AFA disgraced!!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 11-20-02 12:01am
So how many people here have purchased an AFA graded figure? Did you do it because you were afraid of being ripped off by a fake or a reseal? Did the AFA sticker give you security? Well after this you might want to re-assess your feelings.

Check out this thread:
Invisible Reseals

To summarize, someone set out to test the dependability of AFA. They intentionally sent a resealed figure to be graded. They asked AFA to check it for tampering. AFA did not detect the reseal and sent it back graded.

This is the only KNOWN mistake. It's the only time someone has admitted that they sent in a reseal. For all we know there could be HUNDREDS of reseals out there that were undetected by AFA. PROVE ME WRONG!! The person who sent this in did it as a test... she had nothing to gain but proving her point. But there are people out there with MUCH to gain from AFA-graded figures. There are dealers out there selling AFA graded figures for thousands of dollars. I ask you this... who do you honestly think would be more careful in preparing a reseal for AFA... someone who wants to prove a point, or someone who could realize thousands of dollars in profit?

In my opinion, AFA just lost a ton credibility as an authentication service. Sure they can grade their condition, but they can't tell you if they're resealed or not. This figure was obviously overlooked due to it's low value, even though the person who sent it in paid just as much as anyone sending in a 12-back VC Jawa. I think AFA needs to reform their grading service, giving the same attention to every single figure. Otherwise the stickers on their sealed acrylic cases mean nothing.

Clones Invade Toy Shelves in 2003... again
Posted by: Shawn Walleck 11-20-02 12:01am
With Tom Turkey almost on the table, Santa Claus right behind him and plans for ringing in the New Year solidifying, I must admit frustration is in the forefront with regards to my Star Wars collection. Why so negative you ask? Well if you've read any Star Wars site this week you already know Hasbro's plastic plans for 2003. If not, then you heard it here first.

I must admit when the list was revealed my wallet breathed a sigh of relief. The list is reminiscent of a sitcom in its final season, you know when they do all those "remember when" episodes. You get five minutes of new dialogue and 25 minutes of old episodes. So how and the hell does it relate to the Saga line, we get figures we've already seen, this years vehicles we already purchased with carded figures we've already bought too. Two words - THIS SUCKS! It appears that the well of creativity at Hasbro has run dry. Ok so maybe not all of it is a rehash of stuff, but for those of you who like numbers, facts and figures... 10% new plus 90% old = one lame ass toy year. Matter of fact 8 out of 10 dentists surveyed said this is the year they'll be able to fill gaps in their WATERWORLD collection.

As an astute businessman I am clouded by the shroud of Hasbro's new strategic plan. It makes absolutely no sense at all. The only assumptions I can draw are that one: they want collectors to stop collecting, or two: they want to put scalpers and e-bay out of business. I just don't get it, but if you have any good ideas, please feel free to e-mail me at shawn@creaturecantina.com so I can quit breaking and burning the toys I already own.

More Bad News...

Much like Santa I read the list and checked it twice, and low and behold you can't re-release this many figures and leave one mainstay out. Yup that's right, where the F*#* is Darth Maul? The travesty... this cannot be... nooooooooo! I was so looking forward to at minimum a deluxe, a 3 ¾, a 12"-er, one with new vehicle and possibly another hologram. Damn the man! Oh well maybe Hasbro will pick up the slack in 2004 and dub it the year of the Maul...

So Hasbro if you are listening here are my ideas for 2004:

  1. Hats: You know like Watoo and Luke floppy hat! Put a lid on 'em and voila!
  2. Repaints: I like to call them Expanded Universe
  3. Midget pack-in: Who the hell doesn't love a little circus freak... I call them Younginz!
  4. Facial Hair Stormtrooper-troop builder sets: I call this the Galactic Goatee Empire.
  5. Holographic figures: With zero points of articulation... I call this the Saga SUCKER line!
  6. Vac-metalize the original 12 figs on the 25 Anniversary Card back... ooh wait, scratch that... it's a good idea... forget I mentioned it... sorry!
  7. Darth Maul with politically incorrect cigarette smoking action... I call this Paul Maul... Woo Hooo
  8. X-Wing, Snowspeeder, Landspeeder, A-Wing, B-Wing, Y-Wing, Tie Fighter, Tie Bomber: All newly packaged... see reason (5) above. Just in case you were stranded in a Pennsylvania mine shaft and missed getting them the other three times.
  9. Accessory Sets: Complete with all the weapons we've misplaced over the years. Now we have the opportunity to buy and loose them again. Also see reason #5 again.
  10. If you made it this far then start the list over again... there I think I've made my point abundantly clear!!!!!!!

All figures, vehicles and accessories for 2004 will be exclusive to Target department stores and quantities are extremely limited (about one each per store). Ok, you're right that last sentence isn't new information. Well I'm out of ideas and unlike Hasbro I think I'll wrap it up for this week. Stay tuned for next week's story when I retype this one and give it a different headline!

Oh yea and Bill keep my mug off the F***in’ milk carton... but if you must slander my lackluster, unreliable contributions then do it with style on a 40oz of Colt 45!

SirSteve at it again???
Posted by: Bill Cable 11-20-02 12:01am
The Zoman plot thickens... but not like you might expect! To be honest, this news absolutely floored me! Last week I received an E-mail from a little birdie about our favorite webmaster. Here's what he had to say:

From: Little Birdie
To: cable@creaturecantina.com
Subject: Our buddy Sir Suck
Date: Wed, 13 Nov 2002 15:10:20 -0600

I figure you'd appreciate this more than anybody else I know.

Steve has been doing a bit of ebay work with his new ebay ID. scgiles

http://cgi.ebay.com/=1786590028

Taking advantage of collectors, one sale at a time.

Regards...

Very interesting... could it be that one alter-ego wasn't enough for Mr. Comenzo (as regular readers know, Steve Comenzo sold POTF2 figures at a big mark-up a few years ago using a secondary E-mail account: Zoman@juno.com)? Could it be that he created a new secret identity to sell the latest hard-to-find exclusives on eBay?

It seems almost too much to believe... could SirSteve be so brazen? He's already been caught selling figures over cost under an alias and dealt with the repercussions. Would he have the gall to do it again? In this day and age? With so many people watching his every move?? I'd find it hard to believe, but my birdie is very reliable!! And I would find it an improbable coincidence that scgiles would have a repackaged TIE Bomber up on eBay only hours after this vehicle was featured over on SSG.

Let's assume that it is SirSteve selling these exclusives on eBay under this scgiles ID (Steve Comenzo Giles?). Now, it's bad enough to eBay an exclusive instead of selling it at cost to a fellow collector... it's ten times worse to create an anonymous eBay account to do it without anyone knowing! If it's true, it's the height of hypocrisy to run a Star Wars collecting website while doing this incognito on the side!!

I mean, it's not like SirSteve hasn't auctioned exclusives on eBay before. But then unlike previous ToyFair Darth Vaders that SirSteve sold on eBay, these auctions don't say they're being sold to raise money for batteries or charity! I assume this money is going right into somebody's pocket.

And there's a lot of money to be made. We can't go back too far, but just since September "scgiles" auctioned two Toy Fair Vaders (one loose that he received on a damaged cardback from "overseas"), and two Jorg Saculs.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem=1788141596
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem=1786590028
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem=1770492567
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem=1761026144

So we collectors must ask ourselves some questions... Is this really SirSteve? If so, why did SirSteve create this anonymous eBay account to sell exclusive collectibles secretly? Should we really support someone doing such things?

Cable Original #50!
Posted by: Bill Cable 11-20-02 12:01am
Hello art lovers! Today I'm pleased as punch to bring you my 50th Cable Original! When I started these drawings back in 1997 I never would have dreamed I'd reach this milestone. That I have is a great source of pride while at the same time almost embarrassing that so many people appreciate my artwork.

For the first time ever I'm posting two new works of art at once! Why would I halve the number of potential hits to my gallery in such an unwise fashion? It's simple... these pieces go together!

The story started almost 3 years ago, when these two drawings were "requested." The commissioner asked if I could do two characters in one drawing, which as we all know is a no-no. So I proposed an alternate idea... how about two single character drawings that can be displayed side-by-side? He went for it. Then he delayed paying a deposit on them until another guy E-mailed me and asked for one of his two characters (as you know, characters listed on the "requested" list are available to anyone... whoever agrees to pay the deposit first gets it).

I'm really pleased with how these drawings turned out. I feel I've made considerable progress on how I draw human faces... these two are almost recognizable!! So head on over and see the latest additions - including big #50 - to the "Cable Original" Star Wars Art Gallery!!!!!

Let's wash this bad taste out of our mouths...
Posted by: Bill Cable 11-27-02 12:01am
I'd much rather be bringing you comedy instead of the accusations and innuendo of the past couple updates. But I feel kinda like Rush Limbaugh dealing with Bill Clinton... Clinton just keeps thrusting himself into the spotlight! You have no choice but to report on it. Let's see what we can do about cleansing our pallets... with this weeks edition of "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!!

Another shameless plug!?

Attention Cantina patrons! After you finish your Jawa Juice, swing on by Jango's Apartment! There, you will find the complete archived Jango Fett collection of CC.com writer Cory aka Dark Hybrid aka Jango_Fettish. As of right now, the collection is a complete text documentation, however pictures are soon to follow. Once again, that's Jango's Apartment!

More proof that scgiles is SirSteve!!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 11-27-02 12:01am
I received a lot of feedback on the article I wrote last week. And I've read a ton of posts in various newsgroups on the topic. I was surprised by the number of people who commented along the lines of, "This can't be! Not SirSteve!! He'd never do anything like this!!!" So it looks like I need to provide additional evidence that the two are one-in-the-same.

The first bit of evidence came from several E-mails I received stating, "scgiles IS SirSteve!" Among them was an E-mail from the guy who won the loose Toy Fair Vader off of him. He told me that the seller in that auction went by the name "Steve Comenzo." I confirmed that the guy's E-mail matched with the account of the winning bidder, so we can confirm he did indeed purchase this figure. You can check out his comments on the deal here:
http://www.potf2.com/potj/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1282

Look for the post by "judgejedi."

Admittedly that's not concrete proof (no offense to judgejedi). So let's dig further. One of the first things I thought to check when I received the original E-mail tip about scgiles was to look where the images in those auctions were hosted. That brings up a gold mine of evidence! Where is the image of Jorg Sacul from this recent auction (item=1788141596) hosted??

http://www.sirstevesguide.com/images/ebay/commander_jorg_c.jpg

That's right - right on SirSteve's web server! If you look back at all his previous auctions, you'll see images hosted on the SSG web site.

But is this enough evidence to prove the identity of scgiles? Hardly! Steve could simply be doing scgiles a favor or something... lending him web space. So we need something stronger... something absolute! And I think I found it. Go to the "Seller Search" page on eBay located here: http://pages.ebay.com/search/items/search_seller.html
Do a search for sirsteve@sirstevesguide.com and see what comes up. Houston, I think we have concrete proof.

So now we need some questions to be answered: Why did SirSteve change his eBay ID to scgiles? Why choose anonymity? Does it have anything to do with him auctioning several Toy Fair Vaders and Jorg Saculs? I don't know if we'll get any official explanation from anyone, but if they do post something it'll most likely go up in this thread in the RebelScum forums. So keep an eye out!

Bill Cable: Revealed
Posted by: Dark Hybrid 11-27-02 12:01am
Slick Willie..my boss, my buddy, my former lover..AHEM! On the heels of his 50th drawing, I have decided to out the artistic past of our beloved Bill, in a piece I call, "Bill Cable: Revealed".

As stated last week, it all started back in 1997. I myself, graduating high school, eager to pursue a career in radio... while at the same time inspiration hit a strapping young lad in the Steel City by the name of Bill Cable. Crayon box in hand, sketch paper by his side, this soon to be Van Gogh of the Star Wars world scribbled his first Star Wars sketch. I am proud to say, I have obtained a copy of Mr. Bill Cable's earliest work.

Uhh..yeah, this is from 1997, folks. This is no practical joke, mind you. It is an actual, factual piece of work from Mr. Cable himself. What's extraordinarily admirable is how long and how far he has come from such... grade school-esque artwork, to sit on his throne as the King of all Star Wars fanart! What's even more astonishing is how he chose to work so perversely, throwing all his college teachings right out the window.

However, Bill has honed his skill, and is now held in the same high regard as the great David Dorman. Yes ladies and gents, no number of cease and desist orders will slow down the artwork juggernaut that is Bill Cable. As long as the passion for art (and his passion to out SirSteve to everyone on his questionable acts ever week), still burns. There will ALWAYS be another Cable Original for our viewing enjoyment.

Here's to 50 more originals... and of course... 50 more C + D's.

Disclaimer: This story is in no way a form of ass kissing to my boss, Bill Cable, for whom I have not written a story for in approximately one month. =)

You know what happens this week - Thanksgiving! And that means almost my entire staff is already gone. So we're looking at a slim update this week. But at least the short stuff is good stuff!

I'm going to start off by plugging some eBay auctions. I have almost 60 Battle Beasts figures and 175 M.U.S.C.L.E. Men up on eBay right now in a bunch of lots. Over 40 of the Battle Beasts include weapons! So, if you collect more than just Star Wars toys, be sure to check out these treasures from our childhood (and note that I'm selling these under my real name...):

ClevooooOOOO-Bobby from OSWCC wanted to pass this URL along (are we the URL droppers today or what???). This woman is auctioning off her son's SW collection. He passed away recently, and the money will go towards establishing a scholarship at his high school in his name. She doesn't have anything currently running, but be sure to bookmark the seller and check out her auctions as she posts them:

A "Cable Original" unlike any before it!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 12-4-02 12:01am
I've done a lot... and I mean A LOT of Cable Originals. I've drawn humans. I've drawn aliens. I've drawn droids. I've drawn characters that were made of latex, and characters that were completely CG. I've used photo references from books, trading cards, screen caps and the Internet. You could say I've done it all... but you'd be WRONG!! This latest drawing I did really threw me for a loop. The character for this drawing was completely 2-D. And the photo references were almost non-existent! I had to draw primarily from one piece of cardback art on the Internet and photos of the action figure! That's it!!

If you haven't guessed by now, the latest drawing is of the most valuable vintage figure of them all... VLIX! And to be honest, I don't know Vlix. I know he was a fat guy in the old Droids cartoon... a cartoon I can't remember one thing about. So I was doing web searches forever... learning about who he was and what he did. And what I learned drastically changed my approach to the character. Initially I was going for a Godfather-esque pose, until I learned Vlix wasn't a leader... he was a THUG! A knee-breaker! A body guard! So my mental image had to change, and I like where it went. This drawing allowed me unprecedented freedom... along with very high risks. I'm very happy with how it turned out.

I'm sure you're tired of my yammering, so go over and check the "Cable Original Art Gallery" and see what the hell I'm talking about!!!

NO SOUP FOR YOU!!
Posted by: Bill Cable 12-11-02 12:01am
Looks like I'm going to have to apologize for the lack of content yet again. I have to take the blame this time... I forgot to send my weekly whining plea for stories to my staff. So they sent nothing, and I've been spending all my time watching "Taken" on Sci-Fi so I haven't been writing anything (I'm writing this during a commercial break). It's a big mess.

I do have one thing for you, though. It's my comic strip. And it's actually a pretty big one... the start of a multi-part story arc. I gotta give props to my buddy Glenn from the Fun House Toy Company for coming up with the idea. It's funny stuff... I think you'll enjoy it. So head on over and read this week's "The Cantina" Comic Strip!!!

Congratulations Shawn & Denise!!

Life After Star Wars?
Posted by: Dark Hybrid 12-18-02 12:01am
As we all know, a lot of extras and one timers make the Star Wars universe go round and round. Then there are those who had a little more of an impact, only to fade away in the end.

Case in point, Billy Dee Williams. Ol' Lando the Scoundrel. Played a mack daddy in ESB, then got demoted to playing dress up in ROTJ. What a way for the token black guy to go out. So, where did Billy Dee's Star Wars rich resume land him along Hollywood's elite? Doing malt liquor commercials..getting chased by a big ass, blue cartoon bull. Anything for a buck right.

Hell, Mark Hamill?! Luke Effin' Skywalker..career is over after the original trilogy! Is it because he would more than likely be type casted right into Sci Fi flicks? Yep, pretty much. Don't you guys remember the blockbuster epic...never mind..he wasn't in that..BUT..he WAS in..nope, not either. What the hell do you expect from a 51 year old guy that could be easily mistaken for Jim Breuer's father??

Anyway, he whored his voice "talents" all over Hollywood, and ended up doing pretty well for himself in the cartoon voice..er..industry..?

Next example is Carrie Fisher. Ya know, the last I heard of her, she was in an Austin Powers movie. I guess she was smart and knew she could sit on her lazy ass and milk the royalty cow for the rest of her life. Smart move, Car.

Which brings me to Chewbacca...good ol' Chewie. I heard he turned down about every script sent to him! Tons of Sasquatch documentaries, Shaggy Dog movie knockoffs, an adult film or two. Guess it's a dog's life for him..er..whatever the hell he is. Guess he'd rather groom himself with his tongue than make a buck or two.

Harrison Ford. I can't knock Harrison because he was one of most elite actors in Hollywood. He only gets eviler as he gets older, which he doesn't show very much. Indian Jones, What Lies Beneath, Six Days/Seven Nights. He's an accomplished actor with a broomstick of a bed buddy. Buy that girl Calista a carrot stick, Harry! Jesus..

To end this piece, a little "Did You Know?" tidbit. Unless you're some uneducated fool who still thinks Brodie Taylor played Jango Fett in Episode Two, check this out. Temuera Morrison, Daddy Fett himself is a little more accomplished an actor than you may think. Currently, he is the most prominent Maori actor in film today. Attack of the Clones, Six Days/Seven Nights, Island of Dr., Moreau, Speed 2, Barb Wire, From Dusk Til' Dawn 3, Vertical Limit, Crooked Earth, and last but not least, honestly one of the best movies I have ever seen, "Once Were Warriors". He plays "Jake The Muss", an alcoholic, abusive, abrasive father who is described as being a slave to the drink and very short tempered. He is the ultimate villain in this movie, and I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of strong dramatic performance.

So, what does the future hold for the Wal Mart labor giving Natalie Portman? Or the gothic, angry at world, "Life as a House" Hayden Christensen? That remains to be seen, lets just pray to God that we don't see Jar Jar again in Episode 3.

2002 Star Wars Year in Review

I wrote up a Best and Worst list for 2001 but I don't remember if I had it posted here or if I just sent it out to the PSWCS group. But, this year I decided to write up a list again.

I think the "best" far outweighs the "worst" this year but there were some definite stinkers. I'm sure you won't agree with some of this list, but hey, not everyone gets to write for CreatureCantina.com!

So, read on, discuss with your friends, curse my name, spam Bill because he published it but think about all the cool stuff we got to see in the Star Wars universe in 2002! CLICK HERE TO READ Big E's Year In Review!!!
